Hi
Probably didn't have enough 'greats'.
Samuel & Sarah (nee Fox) Daynes (Daines) were the parents of Frederick Fox, Benjamin & Harriet. He would have been born in the late 1700's. Frederick Fox Daines had a son Edward David Daines who came to NZ in 1866. Great great great great grandfather!
Jeanette

Edward Daynes, convict 1846 Maitland from Norfolk

Edward Daynes born Norfolk was convicted in 1844 and transported to Australia for 15 years departing in 1846 onboard the Maitland. Originally bound for Tasmania, the ship disembarked prisoners at Port Philip instead. I'm looking for any information on what May have happened to Edward after this - along with other prisoners I believe he was recommended for a conditional pardon pretty much straight away. Would love to know if a convict / indent record exists and where / how I might obtain a copy.

Hi Keitha,

Hope all is well. I have been in contact with cam and I got your email also, thanks. I'm not sure that Edward was born in may 1846, I'm still looking into it. I got that date originally from Jim Dean who wasn't sure of it's accuracy. Our Edward is most likely the same Edward son of Rebecca, as the dates match and there are no other Edwards recorded in Tasmania bar one who has been accounted for. I've been having a really good researcher look into the family for me and she's still digging up some info. Rebecca was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Samons. Her son Walter went to live in Yorkshire when he grew up and married a Margaret butterfield. There is some confusion that Rebeccas Frederick had the middle name slater - but this is not the same man. He had different parents and I'm notsure what happened to our Frederick or James as yet. After Rebeccas transportation. Her children by James Daynes went to live with Rebeccas parents.

Any stories or pictures you have of dean descendants would be great if you could email them to me. If you know anyone else who has information I would appreciate that too. I would like to do up a book on the family and when this is done, I could send you a copy however I don't know how long this will be. I must ask cam for the same.

Looks like our Dean family mystery may have been solved to some extent! We couldn't figure out how Edward possibly got to Tasmania. But then I shared what info I had with cam and he inadvertently uncovered that paper article which I knew nothing about. In addition to the orphanage record, it proves Edward was not born here, especially considering Rebeccas other children stayed in England.

I'll let you know how we go. Hopefully I might hear something more about Edwards life in tas soon. I'm also looking into an Edward born in Norwich in dec 1846 to see if he is ours - I've ordered a certificate. Any book I do up later will include copies of what documents I have.

Talk soon
Jenna

I wasn't sure if you meant Rebecca when you mentioned conviction, but I'm getting her convict record transcribed at the moment. She was charged with larceny and felony twice. She was imprisoned the first time but when caught again about a year later, she received a months imprisonment and 14 years transportation. She was caught at one point as a stow away on a ship leaving tasmania for Victoria.

Hi,

I was wondering if you could tell me where you got Edward Dean's birthdate from of May 1846? I've not been able to find a record yet. I do believe he was definitely born in England as a newspaper article published by his brother Walter Daynes says Rebecca took her baby with her when she went to Tasmania. Her other young son James remained in England Along with brothers Walter and Frederick. Mary Tolhurst was born in Victoria to Daniel and Margaret Tolhurst, née Gellie. They died on the Victorian goldfields of fever and mary with her brother Edwin went to live in Tasmania with an aunt. Daniel and Margaret were free settlers, Daniel from lamberhaust, Kent in England and Margaret from forglen banff in Scotland. What is your actual line of descent through Edward? I am trying to put together a list of his descendants along with stories and pictures if I can. Edwards son Thomas was my great-grandfather. I'm currently doing more research into Edward and Rebecca, so I may be able to let you know more later. Thanks for your help.

Jenna Dean

My cousin has been researching Rebecca - she was our great great grandmother. Her son Edward was born in Norwich 24/5/1846 before she was transported, so his father was James. Her baby Annie was James Howes' child whom she had married in 1850. Edward was taken in as an apprentice (we don't know of what) at the age of 16 after 11 years in an orphanage. That's when his name was changed to Deans and then later Dean. He married Selina Smith and had 4 children, and after her death married Mary Tolhurst, my grandmother's mother.
We don't have what she was convicted of, so if anyone knows that it would be lovely.

Hi,

I'm looking for any information on this family. James and Rebecca were married in 1839 and lived at Lakenham. They had 3 children (Walter, Frederick, James) and then Rebecca was convicted and transported to Tasmania, Australia, arriving 1847. James remarried Emily Edgar and went on to have a big family.

In Tasmania, Rebecca had a child, Edward Deans, born about 1847 who was put into an orphanage, not sure who his father is, and I cannot find any birth record. She later had an illegitimate child called Annie in 1850. Rebecca applied to marry a Peter Miller and was denied and later married James Howes. She died in 1852 at Cascades Female Convict Factory.

I'm research the name Daynes but I am coming to a stand-still at around 1828. My great-grandfather was Alfred Daynes 1851 to 19??. I think his father was William Daynes 1828 to 1861 who married Margaret Royal. and I think Alfred Daynes is their son. Unfortunately there are many Daynes families in Norfolk and Suffolk and because they all had so many children it is difficult to find out which child belongs to which family. Do you have any further info?

Hi,
I am trying to trace my family tree with name of Daynes from Norfolk. My grandfather John Daynes had a daughter called Alice Daynes by his first wife. My mother was born in 1925 so it was before then. I reckon she was born beteen 1915 and 1924.
I think she have married someone with surname of Rudd, but I am not sure and she may have married again. She lived with her grandmother in Liverpool as a child and our family did not keep in touch. There are at least two other Alice Daynes's in the family one born in 1875 and another who was probably born in 1890's or 1900's who married Fred Daynes to become Alice Daynes. They had a son called Gordon who killed in the war(don't know which one-probably WW1 because I think he was 21). I don't know if they had any other children or if she remarried. There are loads of Daynes in Norfolk and Suffolk. and to make things more complicated, the boundary between the twoo changed, so what may now be Norfolk may have been Suffolk in the time of the marriage. So you need to check both.

Just playing on the web and found a reply to my query from a year ago. My Dad was born in Canda but his 2 brothers and sister were all born in england. His father was James Joseph Daynes and I believe he was from the Norwich area but came to Canada before the WW1. From what I understand there are still coursins in the area. It would be interesting to know about my family as all of my Dads family has past on. He died 3 years ago himself so my branch of the Daynes family is all gone.

I am looking for the ancestors of Abraham Daynes (Dains)
who landed in Casco, Maine in 1663. That is the year Abraham
is first registered here. He was probably born about 1640 one source thinks Abraham came from Devonshire, England and arrived at Casco, Maine(now Portland) in the autumn of 1663.
From there he went to Connecticut and married Sarah Peake.
They lived in New London, Connecticut and had a large family
and many descendants. Sarah was the daughter of William Peake and Abigail Comstock.
If you have any information please contact me at ramoran@amigo.net
Thank you,
Audrey Moran

Many of my ancestors seem to have come from Thetford and Norwich. In the 1891 census my Great Grandparents were in Bradford, Yorkshire and by 1901 they were in West Derby, Lancashire. Unfortunately they are mis-spelt in the 1901census as Naynes. My grandfathers name was Albert Daynes and married to Sarah Harker. They had 7 children AliceMaud, William A, Ann ME (died as a child), Edward, Florence, John Walter, Frederick.
My grandfather William Daynes born in Mildenhall in Norfolk moved to Tottington in Lancashire during the industrial revolution to find work. He married my grandmother Isobel Victoria O'connell from Cork in Ireland who was in Lancashire for the same reason. From this marriage this branch of the family became Catholic and there are many Daynes' around Bury in Lancs. My immediate family are now living in the UK, Australia, Norway and Spain.
