I wanted to ask if there is also a connection between the Davitt and Davey surnames...
I am researching a Michael Davey, born around 1864 in Ireland, immigrated to the US around 1884. I have not found him on a passengers list. I don't know if he went straight to Chicago, but by 1895 he married a Nelly Gilhooly there. Their family shows up in the 1900 and 1910 Census for Chicago. Michael was a policeman. Interestingly, in the 1900 Census the last name is listed as Davitt. In the 1910 Census it is Davey. Also, the marriage record in the State of Illnois marriage index is Davey. Also, this is my married last name and we use Davey.
The descendants of Michael and Nelly were Mona (b. 1900) , Bernice (b. 1901), Leona (b. 1905) and Bernard (b. 1911).
I am stumped with Michael, I have not found anything about his relatives or origins beyond what is stated here. Family legend says that he was an alterboy at mass for some 20 years at St. Ignatius in Chicago. (Family memory puts this Michael Davey in Rogers Part in Chicago, but the census information through 1910 has them south of the loop.)
Any comments or connections would be greatly appreciated. You can email me at
