Edward Davis in Fairfax County VA

I am looking for Edward Davis b.1746 in Fairfax county d. 1790 in Fairfax County. We have a deed between Edward and a William Lyles dated 13 Sept. 1789 which states that his wife is Eleanor and his son is Adam. We think he was married before to an Elizabeth Baker and that she died young. We believe that he is the unknown Davis husband of Eleanor Davis, mother of Warren Davis b.1798 d.1870 Martin Davis b. 1801 d. 1889 Priscilla Davis b. 1801 d. 1871 James Davis b. 1806 d. 1879 and Mary Davis b. @ 1807. James Davis is my ancestor and he was married to Mary King Davis, daughter of Priscilla Calvert and Richard Windsor Davis.
We think we are on the brink of unraveling the mess of this particular Davis family and any information to help push us on would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
Kathy Davis-Page

Thank you so much for this information. Any more would be appreciated. I think Lloyd's father was Robert Davis, born 1811 & Lloyd's mother's last name was Beavens. Robert had another wife with other children, too.
In 1910 or 1920, Wilson Davis, son of Oscar Davis (1/2 brother to Lloyd) was living with Lloyd at the time of the census.
Lloyd is my great grandfather on my mother's side.

According to what I've found:

- Nicketti was a 1st cousin of Pocahontas (through their fathers), and possibly also a niece (through Nicketti's mother).

- Nicketti married Capt. John Rice (Rees?) Hughes, supposed son of a Sir John Hughes by a Mary Griffith.

- (Mary) Elizabeth, daughter of Capt. Hughes by Nicketti, married Nathaniel Davis "of Hanover" (c. 17 Apr 1650-1710), a native of England's ceremonial county of Devon.

- Robert (c. 1676-05 Sep 1771), son of Nathaniel by (Mary) Elizabeth, had the epithet "the Black" due to his complexion and possibly also his hair color.

(I appear to be a 9th great grandson of Robert.)

I feel 95% sure that your Nancy is the sister of Mary Davis who married Richard H. King in 1822 at Alexandria and later moved to Washington D.C.

It was passed down in the family that descendants of Mary Davis were related to Pocahantas -- I've never been able to make a connection but a daughter of Nicketti, I think a sister of Pocahantas, married a Nathaniel Davis. Records of the King family show that Mary Davis' closest relative in 1853 was a James Davis.

The Atwell are neighbors of Davis and King in Alexandria.
Joanne

I may not have it posted right for you. But I am looking for this family too, who would be connected to a Matilda Davis who did Marry Peter Wetzel/Whetsel, in 1836 in Wythe Co., VA.
This information might lead to your name plus help more people.
The Wetzels were Germanic and I believe, although I can not prove it, that Matilda may have been a sistr or a cousin to my Sarah Davis (born in 1803) who was the daugther ot Joseph davis was a son of John Davis (a Germanic Davis) who died in Wythe County and left a Will in 1797. Joseph had ten children and I have never been able to identify with specificity, Sarah Davis' siblings. Jooseph's brothers and cousins all had lots of children too. I ahve a compilation of marriages for Wythe County, and Matilda and Peter's marriage is not listed. The record may have been lost or they were married in a different conty. My Sarah Davis who married Thomas Gray named a daughter Matilda.
Does this help you or any one out there. I am looking for the Parents and siblings of Matilda Davis.

I am looking for Solomons parents.

Everyone here that I can see has him linked to Daniel Davis and up to Charles Davies the Quaker. But I believe this link to be wrong.

While researching that link I tracked down a book called "Davis, A Quaker Family" By Elanor Davis. The book does not list Solomon as a son of Daniel. And Daniel does not mention Solomon in his will, but mentions his other kids.

Does anyone have any information about Solomon and who his real parents are?

Thank You for reading.

Hi Wendy,
Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I wanted to double check the information I have found against the stones in the cemetery. It is a little confusing because many of the original head and foot stones were slate that had deteriorated and had been replaced with marble stones. This left something like fifteen stones scattered around and it was only as we cleaned up the grounds that we started to identify the duplicates. Some of the foot stones are out of place but I believe that headstones to be more accurate.

Any way, here is the run down:

New Dam Road, in the middle of Albert Lavalley' s (now Pleasant River) sawmill.
Re: Thomas & Elias DAVIS- Darlington Co, SC to Wayne Co, MS

I think we talked before, many yrs ago. I have seen this line taken further back than Thomas (married May "Polly)of Darlington (to Wayne). They have his father listed as Wm Davis Jr, a Rev War Soldier who was born 1729 Edgecombe Co, NC. Wm Davis Sr, born c 1700 Isle of Wight Co, VA died 1753 Edgecombe Co, NC. Sr's wife was named Mary. Sr's father was Thomas SR born c1680 & died Isle of Wight Co, VA c1720; his wife was Elizabeth. This Thomas left a will (written 4 Mar 1721) probated (proven in court 23 Apr 1722). This will named wife & children: Thomas, John, William, Frances (now Williamson) Edward, Benjamin. Also named was grandson Thomas DAvis & George Williamson. Sr's father was Capt John Davis Jr born 1643 Isle of Wight Co, VA & died there 20 Sept 1720. John Jr's father was John SR born 1610 England, to America 1648, & settled Isle of Wight Co, VA. John SR married Mary Green. In 1664 John SR owned 200 acres Isle of Wight.

This is what is in two books in Waynesboro, MS library. I have not went any further back than Thomas who left SC for Wayne Co, MS. I do not know if the above is correct, basically only researching Isle of Wight & connectons to Edgecombe Co, NC, will anyone really know.

I am from the Kershaw Co, SC Davises (from a Rosier Davis, son of Edward) that came to the county line of Wayne and Greene Co, MS. They were in both county records. Your Davises do not seem to cross into Greene Co, records. However, the use of the name Rosier & Kershaw Co adjoining Darlington Co, could point to connections. I have collected info on your Davises (Thomas, Elias) as I have worked on mine. I keep seeing conflicting info, so I have decided to organize it into a tree on ancestry. I have gotten no further than the tax rolls, as far as seeing your Hamilton, in his early yrs. I will send you invite to see tree. Since you descend mostly from male to male DAvis line, do you have a brother or Davis male cousin that would do DNA to compare to my line?? We did ours through ancestry. I will also email you. I wanted to put my reply on the board, so it would be on the internet (forever) that someone tried to get this line further back from Thomas.

As far as the cemetery. I enjoy looking for "lost" cemeteries. But since the specifics are from Joe Vinson's home in 1965; I have no idea of finding where that would be. I find it interesting that many DAvises believe they are not related, when they actually are! But the old ones are gone, so the cemetery location may stay lost.

From the line of Isle of Wight above, I guess it is obvious I have never seen this line taken to a Hampton Davis of Wales. I have never heard the name John Patton DAvis.

Paula in Wayne Co, MS (paulacarterdavis@yahoo.com)

Davis of SC

old letter dated January 13, 1834 by Dr. Eli Davis in Abbeville, South Carolina and sent to W. Robert Leckie in Washington DC.

Addressed to Robert Leckie, Esquire, Washington D. C.

Abbeville, South Carolina
January 13, 1834

My Dear Sir,

Your letter of the 30th Ult. in which you give me a copy of James A. Black's letter I received by yesterday's mail. A few days after my return home, I received from Mr. Black a bundle of your papers in relation to work done at York. These papers together with those relating to Landsford were submitted by me to the Legislature in 1831 and referred to the Committee on Internal Improvements and consequently from that moment became the property of the House and could only be withdrawn at your request and by leave of the House. I am yet to learn by what authority a member can carry off the public documents and hawk them through the state. But my dear sir, this is strictly in character with the state of things here at this time.

Everything like regular government is abolished here. Instead of doing the business of the people, the Legislature during its recent session was engaged in passing laws which would have disgraced the reign of Robertspere [Robespierre], and it only remains for a Danton or a Maribeau [Mirabeau] to step forth and proclaim the principles of the French Revolution. Then an equality of rights would be sustained by the goullitine [guillotine] and the purlicus would be decorated with the heads of decapitated victims.

In the midst of this anarchy, however, I will take care of your papers. I shall see Black before long when I will enquire what they have done with the other papers. The Union Party are holding public meetings throughout the state in order to enter their solemn protest against the extraordinary proceedings of the late Legislature. We will, if possible, "expel the Goths from Rome."

I hope you have heard from Mr. Boyce as I shall feel some anxiety till I learn that fact. Give my best respects to the girls to whom my daughter desires to be kindly presented. Tell them I had selected the Hon. Mr. [David W.] Dickinson and the Hon. Mr. Dunlap, both of Tennessee, as beau's for them but it so happened we could not pay them a visit before I left the city. Tell Mary Mr. Dickinson is a likely youth -- only 25 years old altho a member of Congress and as a recommendation, I will state that his Grandfather was a Scotchman.

Adieu. E. S. Davis

And tell Susan that Mr. Dunlap is a little older than Mr. Dickinson, no less handsome & intelligent. -- E. S. D
Re: Harold Davis

I know of a Harold Hudson Davis who was born in 1892 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. His parents were Clyde and Sadie. I have been seeing some family trees how have listed Harold Hudson who had a son of Harold Jr. This would have made the older Harold around 17 or so when he had Harold Jr.

Not sure if this helps....
