I am not related to this person, his obituary appeared in the "100 Years Ago Today" column in the North Vernon (IN) Plain Dealer on 11-24-2010 for 11-23-1910. I thought it might be of help to someone.

J.M. Davis, after a lingering illness of heart trouble and other complications, died Nov. 25, 1910, aged 76 years, 2 months and 13 days. He was born at Paris, Ind., and has lived all his life in Jennings and Jackson counties. He was married to Mrs. Sarah A. Thomas and to this union were born two children, a son who died at two years of age, and a daughter, Mrs. Rose Shepherd, who died in December 1896. His wife died in 1866 and later he married Albina T. Buckles and to this union were born two daughters, Mrs. Lula Hartwell and Mrs. Lucy Tate, both living. He also leaves four grandchildren. He united with the Christian church when a young man and has been a faithful member until his death. He was also a devoted member of the Masonic order for over 40 years. When but a boy he began teaching school and taught in Jennings and Jackson counties until 1883. He was buried at Coffee Creek Christian Church Nov. 27, the funeral being conducted by Rev. Stevens and the Masonic Lodge.
