Hi Don,
Hope you and yours are doing well. Tuesday before Christmas I had a flat tire and while removing the spare from the trunk I fell over backwards on the ice. I broke my right arm at the elbow and ruptured a disc in my back. I am being scheduled for surgery as there were so many more seriously injured the emergency rooms have been overwhelmed.
My Dad's Mom Bertie David passed away 19 December 2000, services were 22 December and she was buried at Leach, Oklahoma. I was supposed to be a Pallbearer, but I had my Brother Roger fill in for me.
Bertie was 96 years of age at her passing. She was of the Buckner family with Creek and Cherokee Blood. My Grandpa Charlie Edward David first married her older Sister Lizzie Buckner who died shortly after the birth of their third child due to post delivery infection-it was a frequent complication in those days. According to Family Custom, Bertie was sent to take care of Charlie's children and they later married and had nine children of their own, including my Dad Leroy. Bertie was known far and wide for her cooking skills on a wood stove. Her chicken dumplings, biscuits and cornbread are legendary in these parts. Sister Lillian Lindsey who is the Daughter of Cousin Jack David and the Minister of Harvest Time Assembly of God for 43 years, conducted the services. She recalled memories of visits to Charlies and Bertie and eating those dumplings "who would melt in your mouth".
Bertie once told my Mom that although she loved all her children, she felt somewhat cheated of her childhood and never got the chance to marry the man of her own choice. I can appreciate that feeling and wish to thank her for her devotion-this is something that has been recounted many times in our family past. Thank all of our David Mothers for your Love and Sacrifices,Amen and Amen.
