Hi Jonathan..just happened to read your quest for May Celina Darche. Did you see in the Darche message board where you posted that there is a message a few earlier than yours dated 2010 where someone is asking similar info as you and has some Fernekes info in that post? You m ay wish to collaborate with that poster. Good luck Dave D'Arche

My great-grandfather Benedict Fernekees was born on Jan. 19. 1831, in Hochspeyer, which is 20 km southwest of Wattenheim, and 53 km northwest of Germersheim.

Benedict's parents were Johannes Wilhelm Fernekees and Eva Schwartz. They were married in Hochspeyer on May 6, 1828.

Benedict's siblings include: Franz (b. 1829), Heinrich (b. 1834), Barbara (b. 1835), Heinrich (b. 1837), Martin (b. 1840) and Margaret (b. 1842).

Yes, there may be some relation, but it probably goes back to before the 1760 or so, as it seems there was a population of families named Fernekees who only spelled their names Fernekees living in Wattenheim (where I suspect your relatives are from), and the Fernekes, who only spelled their name Fernekes, living in Germersheim (where my husband's relatives are from). They are about 33 miles apart as the crow flies. Are your ancestors from Wattenheim?

Hi Tim, I think you have the date wrong of your census data. According to Cook County records, Celina Darche and Peter Fernekes were married 12/27/1891, license #175682. Irvin was born 1892 and Henry 1896. They were divorced by 1910, and Peter was married to someone named either Louise or Lizzie Hempka. By this time she is listed as cClina is listed as May C. Fernekes in the census and is running a hotel, with Henry and Irvin as well as a brother living with her. Peter and Lizzie's "Village Inn" was apparently notorious for attracting the wrong element.

Peter was born in Valparaiso, Indiana. His father, a baker named Charles, was born in Germersheim, Bavaria and emigrated about 1852. Peters' mother, Eva Griebel, was born in Germany, but I am not sure where. Census data indicates Bavaria. Charles' parents were Philip Anton Fernekes and Maria Catharine Schranck, both of Germersheim.

I am attaching a photo taken in the late 1860's of the Fernekes family. Philp Anton and Maria Catherine are seated in the foreground. Their only daughter, Magdalena, is standing behind them and teh five brothers are surrounding her. One of these brothers is Charles, but we do not know which one.

I am seeking information about May Celina (Darche) Fernekes.

The 1880 U.S. Census has her living in Bourbonnais, IL, with her husband Peter F. Fernekes (48), and her two sons, Irwin (7) and Henry E. (3). May's birth year is given as 1870, but it could be 1867.

May's parents were William and Caroline Darche, both born in the mid-1840s to Canadian parents.

I'm most interested in tracing the German heritage of Peter F. Fernekes.

Also, Henry E. Fernekes later went by Henry J. "Midget" Fernekes, and was a notorious bank robber and murderer.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
TSL

I have often wondered what happened to Annabelle. My side of the family recounts that my father (Walther) was madly in love with her and was never quite the same when he came back from NY without her. My uncle (Martin Andersen) recalled their marriage, in what he called "the big church on Farmington Avenue. For some reason I assumed it was it West Hartford. Shortly after I has been confirmed Catholic at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, something gently piqued my memory and I had the rectory check the church's marriage records. I remember being stunned because many years before, my father took me to see the great fire at the cathedral. I never understood his interest in this and he never told me, all I remember was that he was very sad.

I now live in Tallassee, Alabama with my wife Sherrie.

I would welcome any contacts

I found Frank (born circa 1880-81 in Mass) and Emma (born circa 1882-1883 in Canada) in the US Census in Abbington, Ma 1910, 1920. They had 4 children: Omer J, born circa 1902-03, Arthur T, born circa 1904, Ellen A, born circa 1907 and Philip H, born circa 1908. Unfortuately, there were a few Darche families that left Québec around the same time,(all cousins of varying degrees) so it is difficult to find out which one was your husband's ascendants. You would have to find the birth records to get their names, but once you have that I would be able to supply the connection right up to Barthélémy Darche and Charlotte Racine.
Jacqueline Darche

Awaiting info from a French researcher

Hi all,

Just thought I would tell you that I have engaged a researcher in France, to try and find a birth record for Barthelemi Darche and his family. Barthelemi Darche is believed to be the first Darche ancestor to come to North America in the middle 1700's, when we believe he voyaged aboard a French military frigate from France to Fort Chambly, Quebec. I would say, that a high percentage (if not all) Darche/D'Arche ancestors in North America are directly related to Barthelemi.

As far as I know, no one has a firm birthdate for Barthelemi, only that he was born about 1727 in Bourbonne-les-Bains, in the Champage (Haute-Marne) region of France. If I get lucky, I may be able to extend the lineage of the Darche ancestors beyond Barthelemi and his parents.

I am expecting results from the research in 3-5 months. If I find something of interest, I will pass it on.

Regards..Dave email: ddarche@pacbell.net

Well, I have received the research from the French genealogist today and I have found one more generation beyond Barthelemy as well as three brothers of Barthelemi. We now have fairly firm inof that Barthelemy's father was Nicolas and his grandfather was also Nicolas, born in the mid 1600's.
Mary - Please tell me about your experience in Tolland. I used to live in Vernon, about 5 miles away. Never visited when I lived there, as I didn't get into family history until well after I moved to California. I am a member of that society. Got a membership when I learned that Hartford Vital records will allow you to "help your self" provided that you belong to any of the six recognized genealogical societies. I can put my D'Arche people in descendancy order in Family Tree Maker. Regards...Dave

My husband's last name is Darche.

His grandfather's name was Frank H. Darche and his wife's name was Emma A. Darche. They were born around 1880 and lived in Massachusetts. Some sources say she was born in Canada and he in Mass. And other sources say the opposite or that they were both born in Mass. That's as far back as I've gone so far. All my husband's close family members are dead so I have no one to ask information from.

Dear Mary,
I saw your messages and I'm curious to know if you ever found out who Philippe's parents were. I have François and Lea ........ as being his parents, but that doesn't help much as there were several François Darches, but none of them married to a Lea, although that name could have been anglicized. I do have a François Darche who was married twice, once to Elmire Auclair and once to Seraphine Lemay-Poudrier, don't know if he had any children though, but he did end up living in Webster, so maybe he is Philippe's father.
Thanks for any info you have, I'll be happy to share what I've got.
Jacqueline

Hi Mary,
When I looked up Alexis Darche in my family tree, I found two cousins by the name of Alexis, one whom I think would be the father of Frederic, he was born in 1833 and was the son of Laurent Darche and Adélaide Demers, who immigrated to Kankakee. He had a cousin, born in 1834, who disappeared into thin air after his baptism, and was also named Alexis, this one was the son of Alexis Darche Sr, and Sophie Foisy. I was wondering if you have the mariage of Alexis and Louise Boisvert (place, date, parents) so I can resolve this mystery!!
Thanks a lot
Jacqueline

My husband's grandfather, Stanislas Wilbrod Darche, was separated from his wife, Rose Marguerite (Rosette) Tanguay-Darche in the early 1920's. Stanislas Wilbrod, who had served in the American Army as a Corporal during World War 1, even though he was a Canadian, lived in Boston after the separation, possibly with his sister Jeanne Angeline. He passed away, I believe, in the 1930's and would be buried in the New Cemetary (New Calvary?). An aunt claims that he remarried, although my father-in-law has always said he didn't. He had 5 brothers whom I have found no trace of,
Louis-Philippe-Auguste-Léopold, born in Ham-Sud, Québec, Nov 4 1888, J-Louis-Oscar-Yvon, born March 25 1892 in Ham-Sud, Lionel and Clovis.
Perhaps they also moved to Boston.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Jacqueline Darche
