DARBYSHIRE, LALEWOOD & SUMMERFIELD Shropshire

Hi

I am trying to find out more information about the DARBYSHIRE, LALEWOOD and SUMMERFIELD famiIies in Shropshire.

One of my direct ancerstors is an Elisabeth DARBYSHIRE (baptised 22/11/1737 at Market Drayton)

I believe Elisabeth's parents were Edward DARBYSHIRE and Rebecca STRINGER (married 6/2/1737). There was an Edvardus (Edward) DARBYSHIRE born in Drayon in Hales 1707, with father Samuelis (Samuel), It may be that Samuel was born in Shrewsbury and baptised at St Mary's on 26/12/1682. He may have been married to a Maria LALEWOOD at Adderley on 19/8/1706

From Samuel's baptism records his father was Edward Darbyshire and there is one Edward Darbyshire married on 21/4/1674 to a Mary SUMMERFIELD AT Wem

If anyone can tell me more about these families, (or tell me my information is wrong), I would be very grateful

Many Thanks

Eric

Hi Cindy,

My mum was adopted. Her natural father was Harold Darbyshire b1901 Nottingham. Her birth was registered twice firstly by her mother as May Shepherds and secondly by her natural father as May Darbyshire. Harold and Martha Darbyshire lived close to my grandma & mum in the Old Radford district of Nottingham at the time. Edna Olszewski (nee Darbyshire) was my mums half sister. There's a bit more to it but maybe this is not the right place.

Best Regards

Darrell

Re: DENNIS AND DARBYSHIRE

The John Darbyshire of this line I have as born 13 may 1855, married Elizabeth Jane Dennis 1878, St Stephen, Hull Yorkshire, Elizabeth was born in 1857 based on her marriage registration. John Darbyshire was a brother to my GGgrandfather William. Elizabeth was born in Buckfastleigh Devon according to the 1881 census when she is living with her parents as well as sisters Emily, Caroline and Louisa Jane. Father Henry Dennis was listed as an iron worker, wife Charlotte. In the household is a grandson George H (Henry) b 1880 (census says he is one). Elizabeth is listed as Darbyshire, a Gardener's wife, but no John is on the census, he may be working elsewhere or has died, but Elizabeth is not listed as a widow.

I would be interested in learning on their arrival in the US. John's brother William I mentioned had two daughters: Sarah Ellen and Amelia Edith arrive in Canada in 1896 as Bernardo Home Children....... small world.

Good morning. I have the John Darbyshire and Elizabeth Dennis you speak about in your post. I show John Darbyshire b 1855 in Church Fenton Yorkshire, s/o John Darbyshire and Sarah Strothard. The Junior John (your ancestor) was a brother of my GGGrandfather William. Your John Darbyshire married Elizabeth Jane Dennis b 1857 in Buckfastleigh Devon England, d/o Henry Dennis 1827-?, and wife Charlotte 1831-1879. Elizabeth's name is registered as Dinnis on the marriage license and the marriage was in Hull, Yorkshire. Elizabeth and son George H (Henry) appear on the 1881 census for Arlecton Cumberland Eng, living with her father, mother, sisters Emily, Caroline and Louisa Jane. George H is listed as a grandson to Henry (age 1) and Elizabeth is listed as Gardener's wife. There is no mention of husband John at this location. He may be working elsewhere or has died?

The eldest George Dabryshire I have in my lineage is born in Arkendale Yorkshire in 1821.

Can you give me information on Elizabeth's death in Pennsylvania and the data around their moving there? Interestingly, my ancestor William (John's brother) has two daughters Sarah Ellen and Edith Amelia come to Canada as Home Children in 1896. Wonder if they knew they were both in America...... small world. Let me know if I can be of any further help.

Darbyshire/Gaskell

My grandfathers birth certificate has the following information .... John Thomas Darbyshire born Jan 4th 1897 In Leigh Lancashire. His parents were James Darbyshire and Mary Ann (Gaskell) I have found a marriage certificate for (a) James Darbyshire and Mary Ann Gaskell for March 4 1872. (see info below) On John's death certificate his last name was Derbyshire. Unsure when the name change occured. I have heard that it changed when the family came to Canada. I also know that John left Glace Bay after a following out with his father and new step mother, after Mary Ann's death and he moved to Ontario. He never talked about his parents after that.

Marriage Certificate ...
James Darbyshire age 22 Bachelor Collier Woodhouse Lane Wigan Father William Collier
Mary Ann Gaskell age 18 Spinster Weaver Woodhouse Lane Wigan Father Richard Labourer

Has any body done any research (into other sibblings) that can confirm John Thomas was their son? This James and Mary Ann left for Canada on Feb 23 1905 and settled in Glace Bay.

I have proof of four siblings..Elizabeth b 1888, Nelly (possibly Francis) born 1893, John Thomas born 1897, and Billy (possibly William) born 1872/1873. (This was done through a letter by Elizabeth in 1969). These four siblings came to Canada - Elizabeth, William, Nelly (Francis) and John Thomas. I do not know if the other sibblings came to Canada.

Names and dates in the 1881, 1891 and 1901 census show a concurrence with these dates. Additional siblings show a Jane b 1881, Hannah b 1883, Richard b 1885.

Does any one have any other information on the siblings..etc..to show proof of this being the correct James and Mary Ann.

Any help or info would be great!!

Wayne

In addition, I have found at St. Martin -
Ann b. May 10 1806 bp. Jun 8 1806
John b. Dec 24 1810 bp. Feb 3 1811
James bp. Aug 9 1818
William bp.
Grace, thank you for sending information on Lucy.

Am I correct in assuming that our Lucy Derbyshires are one and the same?

I wonder whether you might have any information, including mere 'scrap's, on Lucy's siblings?

I noticed that Alice and Thomas's first child, George, was born in Cheshire and the remaining children were presumably born in Lancashire. Do you know where in Cheshire George was born?

I usually enquire whether any old photos have survived, but since Lucy died in 1890, sadly there is no chance of that!

Do you know which cemetery(s) Lucy and her husband were buried?

Hope to hear from you again.

Maxine.

Hi Grace,

Good to hear from you. Thank you for replying.

Yes, I am a little familiar with Lucy, daughter of James & Sarah Derbyshire and I am keen to know more. I know some of Lucy's history but I do not know what happened to Lucy, including who she married, where the marriage took place and in which area they settled etc. etc. etc. etc

Anyway, I have included what information I have on Lucy.

Lucy was baptised at St Martin at Ashton upon Mersey on June 11 1815 and father James was listed as a weaver of Ashton. From memory, Lucy has a few brothers and sisters.

Mother and father, Sarah Hamnett and James Darbyshire, weaver, were married in 1806 at St Marys Bowdon CHS. Witnesses were John Whitelegg and Philip Darbyshire, the later is a direct ancestor of mine.

Father James was baptised on Feb 8 1784 at St. Martin and he is the son of Thomas & Martha Darbyshire of Ashton. He died 28 January 1862 at Ashton upon Mersey and Ann Oakes was present at his death. Wife Sarah died 24 April 1856 at Ashton upon Mersey.

I suspect Thomas is a son of Henry Darbyshire (bp. 1707-1766). If correct, Thomas would have been the Thomas baptised at St. Martin on Mar 10 1744. Wife of Henry, who is the mother of Thomas, not named.

Henry is an elder brother of Philip Darbyshire (1723-1800) and they are both sons of Richard Darbyshire of Ashton upon Mersey.

I should explain that my interest in Darbyshire families extends beyond my direct line. I have amassed information on descendents of brothers, sisters, cousins etc. of my direct line and am keen to acquire more information.

Look forward to hearing from you again.

Maxine Johnson
Australia
New Darbyshire Family Search

I have just taken ownership of my Mums ancestry papers and have been trying to trace back as far as possible. All the family seem to originate from the Bolton area of Lancashire England. I am unable to locate any information on John darbyshire who married Nancy Crook on 6th Feb 1804. They had 5 children,
Ralph born 23/05/1804 i am unable to find any history at all.
Ralph, born 17/03/1806, i assume something happened to the first child. I think this Ralph married a Margaret and had three children, Robert, Elizabeth and Nancy?
Thomas and Mary were twins and were born 08/01/1808
Henry was the youngest and born 1815 i am unable to find any history on him either.
If any body can offer any help it would be greatly appreciated. I have other family dates names etc that may be of interest.

Hope somebody can help.

Many Thanks, Gareth

Hi Philip, I am not a Derbyshire but noticed your Gaskell connection from Leigh, Lancashire, originally from Macclesfield, Cheshire. My grandad was William Gaskell who lived in Leigh. I was born in Leigh, as was my mother. They originally came from Macclesfield and were barge people, sailing silk barges from Macclesfield to Wigan Pier. I recollect my mum telling me she had relatives in Canada but can't think who they were. If you think we could be connected email me on userf4767@aol.com

Diane xxx

Yes, you are correct, we are talking about the same Lucy.

George Walley says he was born in Cheshire, but doesn't say where. This information came from the 1871 census. The other children were either born in Manchester or Liverpool.

As a matter of fact, Hannan was baptised in Ashton on Mersey in 1848, but that is all I know about her, other than she appears in the 1871 census living in London.

Lucy died in the workhouse, which is about 100 yards from Manchester's Southern Cemetery. So my logic says that she will be buried there in a paupers grave. Thomas on the other hand is more than likely buried in Phillips Park Cemetery. Manchester.

I have the death certificates for Lucy and Thomas, and various marriage certificates. If you would like copies I will email them to you.

Interestingly, the marriage certificate for Thomas and Lucy (and I have that as well) is made out in the name of Wallis. There are no other marriages recorded in the name of Walley, so I am assuming that the registrar mis-heard the name Wallis for Walley. Bearing in mind that neither Thomas nor Lucy could read or write, they wouldn't have known the difference.

Lucy had several sisters.

Mary 1808
Martha 1809
Elizabeth 1813
Eliza 1829

Other than that, I do not have any other information regarding her siblings.

Hope that answers your questions, let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Grace.
Thank you, I would love copies of the certificates.

It must be me, but for the life of me, I can't see your email address other than the one at Ancestry. I am not aware that they forward attachments. I just don't know how to get the copy certificates to you, other than via my scanner.

Are you able to ready my email address?

I used to live about two miles from Ashton on Mersey, but at the time I wasn't interested in the family tree. Then we moved about thirty mile away, it was at that point in time I started to take an interested in the family tree. Wouldn't you know it! I could have walked to where it had all taken place, now I have to make a special journey. Both the Derbyshire and Walley family, more or less, stayed within a 20 mile radius of where they were born, and died.

I have a second cousin in America from the Walley side, and we keep in touch regularly, so I know she will be extremely interested in our conversations. I did forward you first email to her, and will certainly send her copies of your certificates when they arrive.

Keep well.

Just in case my email address: gracefarr@btinternet.com

Grace.

Don, if Charlootte is your sister I spoke with her a few years ago after she visited Scranton. I have some papers and pictures that I was going to send but I lost her address when I moved. Get back to me with an address and I will collect them up and mail them. My grgrandmother was Carolind Dinnis Foss, Eliz. Janes sister. So I guess we are cousins.

Beth Hubbard
