Hi
I'm Sophie and I live in Sussex, UK. Today we discovered that my fathers grandfather was in fact adopted. I have very little detail at this time but awaiting more, all I know is that we are Aitken's but my fathers grandfather was actually Danskin and from Scotland before he was adopted.

i have an Alexander Danskin in my family tree - He was the grandson of William Danskin, born 1746, d. 1896. He lived in or near Cumbernauld, Scotland; Alexander's father was George Danskin, born 1777 and died 1860. He emigrated to Huntingdon, Canada on April 15, 1829. George's son, Alexander was born May 4, 1816 in Canada, and died July 6, 1911.

We did have a cousin, John Danskin who was born in the USA probably between 1900 and 1910. But, i do note that John, George, Alexander and William seem to be popular Danskin names. My branch of the Danskin family came from Cumbernauld, Scotland - so we may be some shirt-tail relations, but i'm can't say that "my" Alexander Danskin is the one you seek.

Hello Pam, and please just call me Bill...and thank you for replying, believe it's summer with you in NZ, very cold and frosty now here in UK, am now living in Newcastle upon Tyne. Your mother was born in Torphichen, historic place with the famous Torphicen Preceptory...google for Undiscovered Scotland, click on the A to Z index and under T is Torphicen and then the Torphicen Preceptory, think you'll be proud to hail from there...Where did your Paternal grandfather come from? I was born near Falkirk, Stirlingshire but settled in the N E England with my family after leaving the R.A.F...My Houston line is mainly from Stirlingshire, and the William who married Christina was from Larbert, a small town not far from where I was born, and though his son, William was born in Old Monkland, he moved to Falkirk with his family.Did you know the Houston name originated in Scotland around 1492?? Look forward to hearing from you, Bill

Hi William, you are the first Houston that I have contact with and I am very excited. Will look at my tree and give you the line down to me. My connection to the Danskins are George Danskin and Mary Anne Ritchie, who had my grandmother Helen Ritchie Danskin who married Thomas Saunders Boyle, he latter dropped the Boyle name, who came to New Zealand in the mid 1920s and settled in Granity West Coasts South Island New Zealand. My mother was born in Torphencan? Bathgate and she also came out to New Zeland. My mother married William Douglas Graham and I am the first born of these two. Incidently my boss at New Zealand Post prior to my retirement was Ken Houston and his father was William Blackwood Houston. The Houston family came to New Zeland when the boys were attending High School. Will get back to you when I have the line six back of Williams. Cheers, Pam Reid nee Graham. Dads father came from Scotland when he was about 30years.
Hello, have just joined the Lanark site today and the first name I came across was Danskin and mention of the 1850 census of John Danskin. Also on the census is his Son in Law, William Houston, who is my Gt. Gt. Gt.Grandfather married to John's daughter Christina on the 2nd April 1841 at Cumbernauld. I'd be very grateful if anyone could give me further history of the Danskin Family, I only went as far back as John born 1792. Thanks Bill Houston - 6th Genaration of William Houston's!!

Re: Adoptee - Robert Edwin Danskin

Sorry, just saw this. I believe his Danskins were actually of English descent... the father was English, from what I can recall. Unfortunately the information I gave is the information provided by the adoption agency - they declined to give any further information, for some reason. (Perhaps back then, the mother requested she not be contacted.) I know the family that adopted him was Mormon, but I have no reason to believe his bio family was. I do know his birth mother's father was very strict, and the mother was worried he'd find out. This could indicate that they were religious, but on the other hand, it could've just been a mark of the times.

Hi Amy. Pam Reid of New Zealand. I am a decendate of the Danskin Family which came to New Zealand and originated from Scotland. Some also went to Canada and Australia in the 1920s. It is hard when you dont have a name. What is written on the Birth Certificate and also look at the adoption certificate. Also talk to the generation from around that time. Ask about which towns maybe involved and their religion, then if possible find a church that just may have some records. Look up shipping records from England. Good luck in your search, yes very trying at times but suddenly someone will pop up and boy o boy the feeling is simply great. Pam Reid, nee Graham. Late mother born in Scotland and a granddaughter to George Danskin . Cheers.

I am posting this for a family member, who was adopted. He was born Robert Edwin Danskin in 1941, and would like to find his family. He was born in Toronto. We don't know his birth parents' first names, except that they would've been born around (I believe) 1927 - but I could be mistaken on that. I'm pretty sure the form I looked at for this relative said that his mother's father was English.

If anyone has any information, please contact me by PM. I have tried everything else.

Hello Scott, Pam Reid of New Zealand. I am related to the Danskin family but I think you are in a line of a brother. I to have got back as far as 1792. My Great grandfather was George Danskin who married Mary Ann ritchie. His father was John Danskin married to Janet Shanks. I think his father was John/ George Danskin and his father John Danskin born Falkirk and married? Margaret Bryson/ in the 1851 census also living with him is William Houston, with his children, John, Mary and William. I think Margaret W Bryson was in a poor house (1851 census). You can email me at pamannreid@hotmail.com. Gt grandad Danskin and some of his family came to New Zealand about 1926/7 and settled in the West Coast of the South Island. Regarding Alexander did he have quite a long name of which I remember some of them, Sommerville, houston/ etc. Interesting enought my boss is a Houston who came to New Zealand when he was a teenager. Sometime down track I will follow his line but only after I have finished mine. Hoping to hear from you soon Pam of New Zealand.

Thank you Judith - I have located the marriage record for Joseph and Sarah Turpin in the Northumberland fiche at my local genealogical library - August, 1830, in Newcastle. I need to find out their parents' names in order to confirm a hunch. I believe Joseph is the son of Robert Danskin and Elizabeth Grand. I do know that he was born in 1807.

Do you know where your Danskin family originated - Scotland or England? The first Danskin in England was Robert Danskin who married in 1772, no Danskins before that in England. The theory is that Robert moved from Scotland. The first Danskin in Scotland was in the mid 1660s - apparently from Danzig in Poland and the name originated from his place of origin. So the theory goes that all Danskins in the world are descended from that one.

I am putting together a tree of both Scottish Danskins and English Danskins and would like to know more of your family if you are willing to share.

Regards,
Sue (nee Danskin - living in Edmonton)

Does anyone know anything about a Danskin family in Nailsea, Somerset. It appears that Joseph Danskin moved to Somerset with his youngest two children Sarah and Edward after his wife Mary died to live with his daughter and son-in-law Martha and Edward Churchill. According to the 1871 Census they lived on Main Road, Nailsea. Thanks.

Hi Barry - looking for more information on the Australian side of the Danskin tree. For example, who did James marry - have first name Sylvia but no last name. I understand they had several children and many grandchildren. I have a great deal of information going back from John Danskin and Margaret Palmer. Please e-mail me at susieq13ATcanadaDOTcom

I can also confirm that the Thomas Danskin who died in the mine disaster was not the one who married Elizabeth Scott.

Sue (nee Danskin)

Hi Leigh-Anne - It's a pretty good bet that your Danskin belongs on the tree of all those of us who are researching the Northumberland/Durham Danskins. They all seem to be related! The Atkinsons I have on my tree are by marriage - A James Atkinson married the daughter of Margaret Danskin (b.1893, daughter of John Danskin and Margaret Ann Palmer). If this sounds like the same family, please get in touch with me:
susieq13ATcanadaDOTcom

John and his wife had 3 children that I know of born in the 1950s/60s

Regards,
Susan

Hello Scott, I have found the Houston name in the 1851census along with John Danskin. The irony of this find is my boss is Ken Houston who with his family came to NZ when he and his brothers were teenagers. He going to visit is mother in Otorohanga this weekend and show her what I found. He also is going to ask if she knows any other family members from the past. Is this the same line and mine, I have had quite a number of people contacting me not only for this part of the family but also my fathers side as well which has put a enormous amount of pressure on me as all the aunties and uncles are all deceased and hopefully some of my counsins are going to be of help to me. Looking forward to hearing from you. Pam of NZ

Iam a great great granddaughter of John Danskin and Janet Shanks. great grandfather is John Danskin marries to Mary Ann Ritchie, their daughter is Helen Ritchi Dansking and she married Thomas Saunders(Boyle) of Stirling. My late mother is the eldest daughter of granddad and grandma who came to new zealand 1926 and 1927. On daughter was born here in new zealand also deceased. Now a sister of Mary ann is Helen who married a Dean Stewart who also came to New Zealand about the same time. His widow is still alive living in Blenheim South Island. One person who maybe of help to you is at the moment in Edinburgh on furlong from Argintina. The mail to that country is quite dodgy. I have some geneaolgy printed ready to be posted to her. I have not read any of the other messages as yet but you can contact me directly on pamannreid@hotmail.com. As I am the eldest living in New Zealand on the above direct line searching has been quite a lot of guess work although have mad significant break through at times. e.g. Saunders appears in one of the cencus as Sanders. Just one of the little take plenty of time to read everything presented. Hoping to hear from you soon. The name and address of this cousin of my late mother is Betty Burnett,c/o Missionary Home, 6/2 roseburn Maltings, Edinburgh EH125LY

At that time, my grandmother was 19 and her new stepdaughters were more or less her age. They never married and are said to have died sometime in the 1980s.

Do these names sound familiar to anyone? I would really like to find out what happened to them and who their mother was.

Ralph Danskin - wife Mary? sons Thomas, Robert, John

I'm new to genealogy - My great-grandfather was Ralph Danskin born Lemington in 1839, sons Thomas, Robert (both born in Scotswood) and John William (my grandfather - born in Newcastle). Does Raph fit in with any of the William Danskin/Elizabeth Wheatley connections? All my Danskins lived in the Newcastle/Chester Le Street area and were involved in mining.
