Hi,
I know this a really old post, not sure if you still come on this site. But I am researching my husband's Portuguese family. Their name was Sylva / Silva /Sylvia/ Silvia / da Silva. They settled in New Bedford, MA. I found several on the 1855 MA census. Let me know if any of these names/dates ring a bell.

John b. 1815, Portugal
Mary b. 1825, Portugal
Mary J b. 1845, Massachusetts
Joseph b. 1845, Massachusetts
George b. 1855, Massachusetts
John Jr. b. 1850, Massachusetts
Antone b. 1845, Massachusetts
Lousia b. 1805 Portugal

In this census they were listed as Sylvia, later on I mostly see them as Silva or Sylva.

I'd love to hear about your New Beford Da silva family.
Thanks,
Jill

Hi Josephine,

Thanks for your response! Been wondering when I would find someone related to this family! With 8 kids there should be a lot of us!

Your family doesn't happen to have any pictures of Antonio or his wife Beatriz that got passed down through the years, do you? I have a painting (supposedly) of Beatriz that I found in an old box and scanned in. My dad said that there was once one of Antonio too but that my grandparents had said it was lost decades ago. Have never seen a photo of either of them.

My Greatgrandfather Manuel B. da Silva born 1870 on the Eastern part of Sao Miguel (Lagao/Provacao....) married Maria Madeira (though I have info showing it spelled Medeiros) born between 1873 & 1880, also in the same area. Their children born in the Azores are: Maria about 1892, Irmelinda 1895, Maria Anjos 1897 (Anjos changed to de Sourle on the 1910 US Census), Manuel 1902, Francisco 1903. They emigrated to the US in 1906 and 'Americanized' their last name by dropping the da. They had three more children in Hawaii. I am trying to find Manuel & Maria's date of birth, marriage, and any previous ancestors. Any help out there?

He married Agnes Henrietta Godfrey and had 3 children - Irene Elizabeth, Mervyn Joseph and Millicent. Irene Elizabeth was my grandmother. Not sure if this is the same family because the Millicent in my family did not marry

The family story we all grew up with was that Paulo and his brother Domingos jumped ship in Northland from a whaling ship from Brazil. This was fine until I got the marriage certificates of each of them and found different parents and indeed born in different countries LOL. I have been unable to go further back than this to date.
I have John Paul Silvas birth certificate but had no idea about marriage or death. However I've just done a quick search and found a marriage to Bertha Maude Brown 1915 and death in Queensland 1988. I also found a son Aubrey of theirs. I had his name floating around in my tree but had no idea where he fit. I havent checked any of that last info and I'm supposed to be off the computer tonight for the kids to do homework! Oops LOL. I'll keep you posted if I dig up anything. Will also send an invite to my tree so you can have a look.
Thanks heaps,
MIchelle

I'm not sure the the relationship between Paulo and Domingo although I have vague memory of my grandmother referring to John da Silva as a cousin / second cousin.

From the research i have done I can find John Paul being the son of Paulo and Mary but haven't been able to find a marriage or death certificate for him.

I do have Paulo and Mary's marriage certficate but thats where I got stumped. Domingo is my 3 great grandfather and thought that he and Paulo were brothers. However Paulo and Domingo have different parents according to their marriage certificates. Did Paulo have three children John, Catherine and Theresa?
Thanks so much and I look forward to sharing with you.

I am trying to trace my great grandmother- Angelina D'silva who lived in India and married someone called Charles Beatty. She had several children Celsus Victor Beatty born 1895. Jeremiah Randoph Beatty 1900-1953 and Angelina Beatty 1912-2002 and died in 1912. I know she had a brother. We are not sure of his name but know he had a daughter called Millie or Milly D'silva who married a Fernando. If this at all matches any of your searches please let me know.

I am trying to track the D'Silva's from Bangalore India. My great grandmothers name was Angelina D'Silva. She married Charles Rudolph Beatty and she died in 1912. Angelina had a brother who we dont know the name of. However, he had a daughter called Millie or Milly and she married someone with the last name Fernando. They had 7 children- four boys and three girls. My grandmother married a soldier in the army and moved to England. Her family were strong catholic.

Wondering if anyone here is descended from this family and if you have other info about them. Here is what I have:

Antonio Jose da Silva was born in Parish of Se, Madeira. He married in 1873 to Beatriz Josepha da Camara. They left Madeira for Hawaii in 1879 with children Manuel and Leonid. All four show up on the ship manifest of the Ravenscrag. Antonio and Beatrice both died in 1920 in Honolulu.

According to the 1900 census they had a number of other children after arriving in Hawaii including Mary, Phillip, Antone, Virginia, and Frank, so I'm assuming there are a number of descendants in Hawaii and elsewhere. Phillip is my great-grandfather and he ended up in California which is where my grandfather, father, and I were born.

Sarah...It is highly likely that there is a connection as the multiple surname - Pinto da Silva originated in the mid-1630s on the island of Madeira. Family members have migrated to many countries throughout the 450 some-odd years making for a genealogical nightmare. There is a good chance, your antepassados left Madeira for the mother country marrying one of the locals in Oporto in your case and eventually settled in the United States. I just recently made contact with cousins whose forebears left Madeira and settled successfully in Lisboã and Setubal several generations past. And let us not discount the many of our kin in California, Hawaii, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Brazil, Argentina and the Guineas. Your ancestor retaining the Pinto da Silva surname puts credence in his past and adding the Leão puts an emphasis on that connection. You might look for a marriage in Oporto between the Silva and Leão personages and learn of the former's birth place in Madeira. There was none noted in the Arquivo Regional da Madeira marriage files so it would appear that the gentleman 'flew the coop' as a single man. I am now curious about this new 'wing' of the clan!

My great grandfather was Arthur Leao Pinto Da Silva, born in Oporto, Portugal (1878) and moving to Lisboa at some point. He moved to America in 1919. He had a brother Antonio Leao Pinto da Silva. His parents were Jose and Maria (maiden name Ferreria.)

I have been speaking to your cousin Marie Hardage, who is Blanches grand daughter.

Aparently Norbert was quite a busy fellow! He also had a family in Trinidad. He married Rosa Comissiong and had 12 children. One of which was my grand father Mark Anthony Nieves, fondly called boysie. I understand that he also had at least two more liasons in St. Joseph and Arima where he left his "mark". I would really appreciate hearing some more.
Hello Tatiana,

I can reply in Portuguese or English but, for starters, let's use English. My wife is a Brasilian named Marina da Silva Pinto and her fathers family came from Sao Paulo. Her great-grandfather was Thome' Benjamin da Silva Pinto, a coffee exporter from Portugal, who maried Clara Isabel Fernandes and had 4 children with her - Jorge, Henrique, Benjamin and Olimpio da Silva Pinto (my wife's grandfather). Olimpio was born in Itatiba, SP July 31, 1880. Are you related to one of the other children?

It also appears that Thome' separated from Clara and began a second family em Campinas. Perhaps you could be part of that family (which we know nothing about).

Let me know if this helps. Small world, isn't it?

Don Coulter
Weatherford, Texas, USA
Hi,

My name is Shelly Ann Hee Chung (formerly Da Silva). My father's name is was Vetus 'Beebs' Da Silva; he died in Miami back in the 80s.

Vernon Da Silva is my uncle but since my father migrated in the 80s the family lost touch with each other. My father has several other siblings, in cluding Vernon: Raphiel(deceased), Edgar, Anita, Bernice, all mothered by my deceased grandmother Gurtrude Da Silva (formerly Perreira)and deceased grandfather Roy Da Silva; Roy was an alias, we are not sure what his birth name is.

My father and most of his siblings were born in St Vincent but two were born in Trinidad. However, the family is of Portuguese history.

I am interested in getting to know the Da Silva side better.
