Have recently discovered that the name Czolgosz could possibly have been changed to Soquist. My ancestor was Agnes Mary Czolgosz (possibe birthdate 1855) married to John Pomarzynski of Buffalo New York. I have information that leads me to believe that her name was changed to Soquist, reason unknown... If any one has any information that could help please E-mail me at quilter8@go.com

My mother-in-law's mother's maiden name was Czolgosz. Family lore suggests that there is a link with Leon Czolgosz. He is the man who killed President William McKinley.

Sound familiar to anyone?

I'm trying to find out if the Czolgosz family changed its name to Gosz to avoid bean associated with the assasain Leon Czolgosz and the fear of foreigners in general. I think this may be where my family name GOSZ came from, because i can't find it anywhere else. Please help.

Hi,

My mother-in-law and my wife's family have always said that Leon, "Uncle Leon", was the brother of my mother-in-law's grandmother. Her name was Josephine (?) Czolgosz.

I recently got from Amazon.Com a book entitled "The Manner of Man that Kills" which is about three killers, one of whom is Leon Czolgosz.

In the book, it listed his family. Josephine did not appear. So, I just this weekend told my mother-in-law that she is not related to Leon -- at least not as closely as she had thought.

I have a Josephine Czolgosz in my family tree and was wondering if the same. She maried a Michael Slwinski. They had two children Andrew and Frances. Josephine is the sister to my great-grandfather.
In regard to Leon Czolgosz - we were also told as children that his was a great-great-uncle, however, I have obtained some information from a college student doing research on Leon Czolgosz. Leon was the son of a Pawel (Paul) Czolkowski, a Polish immigrand who reportedly had come to America around 1860 from Cerekwicz below Znin. The people from this village transplated themselves in Toledo. The family lived in Detroit, Rogers City, Posen and Alpena. When they moved to Cleveland it is believed that for a time they lived in Toledo. It is believed that he attended St. Anthony school in the Polish/German area of Toledo. It is possible that they alread changed their name as no Czolkowski records can be found but several Czolgosz's (possibly all related) lived in the area at this time. When Mckinley was ssassinataed local authorities went to my great-grandparent's home to question family members on relationship to the family. The family denied knowing Leon or his parents. I have found no records of him in our family tree.

I have a CZolgosz in my family tree also. Walter Czolgosz was a fire chief in Toledo. I would like to know if anyone knows his parents. He also has a brother named Frank. His family also owned a funeral home in Toledo.

Walter was my grandmother Helen's brother.
Their parents were John Czolgosz and Marcyanna Czlapinski. I have record of 13 children in the family. The parents lived at 1441 Techumseh St., Toledo, Ohio. John's parents were Antoni and Antonina Czolgosz from Poland.
How are you related to Walter?

Czolgosz, Walter

Walter Czolgosz married my grandfather's sister, so I guess that would make him my great-uncle. Her name was also Helen, maiden name Karbowiak. If you would like her info, please let me know.
