I am looking for information on Mary Czekala who married Frank Kressa or Kress or a variation of. They had a son, Alexander Louis Kressa (my grandfather) on December 25, 1898. Alexander was baptized at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Chicago on January 1, 1899. If you have any information I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,
Cathy

My Pawel Czekala had a brother named Alexander. Do you know anything about Mary's siblings, parents, birthplace? There may be a connection.

Hi, Janice. Thank you for the reply.

I do not have any information on Mary Czekala except that she married my Great Grandfather, Frank Kressa. I have no dates of birth, death or marriage. I am assuming that the birth dates would be somewhere in the 1870's. That's only a guess.

My Grandfather,(their son), Alexander Louis Kressa (christened name and later changed to Albert Louis Kress by himself), was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 25, 1898. There are other siblings of Albert that I have.

I do know that Albert was christened on January 1, 1899 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Church in Chicago, Illinois.

If you can provide me with any information, I would appreciate it very much as I cannot go back any farther than Mary Czekala and Frank Kressa. If there is any other information I can give you, please let me know. I would be happy to help.

Hi Cathy, Sorry but I am not aware of any Marys in the family however if I find one I will contact you. Several years ago my sister and cousin found a retired judge somewhere around the Chicago area. He said there were several different Czekala families who immigrated to Chicago. My Czekalas lived in the Bridgeport area. Good luck searching, Janice in the frozen north Florida

Found today at http://pgsa.org that my Mary Czekala was really Maria Czekala. She and Frank Kressa were married in 1886 at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Chicago. My grandfather, born Alexander John Kressa, had a godmother by the name of Magdalena (August) Szczepanski. They were married in 1880. Magdalena's maiden name was also Czekala. Does anyone have any information on Magdalena or possibly Magda. She may have been Maria's sister. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I cannot go back any farther than my ggrandparents name and now their marriage year.

I have no information but believe we have some sort of connection. My gggrandmother's maiden name I believe was CZEKALA. My mother had it written down as Ciekalaw. Another researcher had a spelling of CZEKALOW, but since I can find nothing on those spellings I am pretty sure CZEKALA is the correct one. My ggrandmother's name was Mary Waszko, her parents were Cecilia Czekala born abt 1835 & Szymon Waszko. Mary was born in Rosko Poland abt 1854, married Joseph Pyterek from Gulcz Poland. They came to this country around 1873. The following is a thanksgiving from the Polish papers after Mary's funeral. It has A. Szczepanski listed as a pall bearer. Back in 1928 (when this is from) pall bearers were usually family members or connected in some way.
in rememberance
MARIANNE PYTEREK STRZYZEWSKI

First of all Father Pastor Alexander Knitter, for escorting the casket from the funeral home and then to the cemetery; Father Pastor Peter Pyterek for celebrating the mass; Father Pastor Alex Knitter and Father Steven Bubacz for celebrating mass on the side altar; Father Pastor Paul Sobota and Deacon Anthony for their assistance; We thank the organist K.Pawelkiewicz, Miss Annie Marskiej for her singing and Mr Anthony Kowalkowski for playing his violin; We thank you members of St. Irene Society C.O.F., the Rosary members of St. Stanislaus K., For the members of St. Constance Parish for their assistance at home, at church and at the cemetary. We thank our family and friends for the beautiful flowers and spiritual bouquets. We thank Mr. John Czekale, M. Retzke, J. Kramer, J. Kowalkowski, W. Kramer and A. Szczepanski
for being the pall bearers. We thank the Funeral Director Mr. Alojzemu Wasko.
Once more we thank everyone in our Polish tradition " May God reward you and Bless you"
THE FAMILY
I still need to order & look at the microfilms for marriages I found at the PGSA site. I also see that there is an obit for my gggrandmother Cecylia Waszko that I need to order. There should be more information there as to any connections. I will let you know what I find out.

Thanks for writing. I'm very curious to see what you find out.

My Mary Czekala was actually Maria R. Czekala. She went by Mary. According to the pgsa.org site, she married Frank Kressa (my ggrandfather) in 1886. She died in 1963. I have no birth date for her but seeing that she died in 1963, I have to assume that she was born around 1866. Frank died in 1912. Between their marriage date and his death, he changed his last name to Kress. Don't know why. All of their children have the Kress last name.

From reading your information, I'm hoping that Cecilia Czekala had a brother who had a daughter named Maria R.

Please let me know anything you find out.

Cathy

Have you ordered the microfilms of marriages yet? I have the film which has Magdalena Czekala on it. I also have the film which has Maria Czekala & Frank Kressa, but the Family History Center is only open on Tuesdays this summer & I now have to wait until July 9th to see them again. I did make a copy of Magda's marriage record. The Wysocki's were her guardians & she was from Rosko, Poland. That is the same town my greatgrandmother Mary Wazsko is from. Mary's mother's maiden name was Cecylia Czekala. My Mary's brother Roman, had at witness at his marriage whose name was Joanne Czekala. Looks like there is a connection. When I go back on the 9th, I will make a copy of Mary & Frank's marriage & send you a copy if you would like. The writing is bad & it is in Polish but it is something to go on. The film #'s I have on loan are 1577900, 1578067, 1578069 & 1674147. If you have anything on these films you would like me to look up, let me know. I only have them for a month.
Once we make the connections here it will be time to head to Rosko, Poland.
Happy hunting, Chris

Hi Janice,

I have recently found out that my Mary (possibly Maria) Czekala's parents were Michael and Mary (Rybak) Czekala. I believe they came from Rusku, Poland. Any connection.

Thanks,
Cathy

Not that I know. I really know little only:
Paul was born @ 1871 in Poland. His home when he left for the US was Ruda Osoweica. He arrived @1889 and moved to Chicago. He was Roman Catholic and had, at least, two brothers, Jan and Ignacy. Thanks for remembering me, Janice
