Gustavus CZECH Iowa, dead end---please help if you can :)

Hello, I have a great-great grandfather that is supposedly named Gustavus CZECH. I have a copy of his marriage certificate to Leonora SCHLEFFEL (SCHLOEFFEL) dated Aug. 6th, 1866, in Davenport, Scott Co., IA. They had a daughter, Jennie (or Eugenia/Igenia) born in approx. 1867 who is my great-grandmother. By the time the 1870 census rolls around, Leonora (Lenora/Elinora) is back living at home with her parents and gets remarried in December of 1870 to a Ferdinand BICKEL. There's no sign of Gustavus CZECH anywhere I can find in the 1860 or earlier censuses and I can't find any record of him having served in the civil war. Jennie CZECH and her brother William kept their father's last names after their mother's remarriage (and their mother was remarried with the last name CZECH), but it seems as though he appeared out of thin air. The only other clue I have is a note written in a scrapbook of Elinora's from a Charles CZECH. Her SCHLOEFFEL family is from Prussia. If anyone has any info pertaining to any CZECH's that might be related, I would be so thankful! Thanks !!!!!!!!

I have Czech in my family but unfortunately no Gustavus/Gustav.

I mainly use familysearch.org and found tons of info for my family tree there.

They do have a Gustav Czech but not the one married to the one you are looking for.

I did find a Elnora SCHLOEFFEL, Birth: Abt. 1845 <Le Claire, Scott, Ia>; however, she is married to Christian Czech Born: Abt. 1841 Place: <Le Claire, Scott, Ia>

I think this may be your guy because they do have a daughter, Jennie Eugenia CZECH, Birth: 22 Jul 1867
< Le Claire, Scott, Ia>, Death: 17 Jul 1951<Moline, Rock Island, Il>.

Jennie married William Henry OLINGER on 24 Oct 1889 Princeton, Scott, Iowa.

I also found Jennie's soc. sec. no., which I rather not publish here (even though it's public on familysearch.org). Go to familysearch.org and look for Jennie Czech. The last search item you will see is the U.S. Social Security Death Index.

William's info is as follows:
Birth: 21 Aug 1865
Colona, , Il
Death: 6 Mar 1950
Moline, Rock Island, Il
Father: Unknown Olinger
Mother: Unknown Pollack Birth: Abt. 1843 <Colona, , Il>

I hope this is what you are looking for.

Thank you for the information--the other family members are correct but there's a couple references (including marriage certificate) that list his name as Gustavus and Augustus, not Christian.

Still searching...

Heather,

It has been a long time since I worked on my tree; however, I found this.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/search/frameset_search.asp?P...

Not much info as far as marriage goes; however, it does have the parents listed.

Hopefully, this will take you a little further.

Sorry for taking so long to reply--I've been away from genealogy for some time now but I'm just getting back to it. Thank you for your reply--you were right on the mark and I got their marriage certificate from Davenport, IA and it is Gustav.

Anyway, thank you for the info! :)
