LEO FRANZ CZECH born Dec 24, 1900 came from Gdansk, Danzig, Poland....jumped ship in NY, traveled through Canada, married Marie C. WENZIN in 1932 in Los Angeles, California where I believe he was working for the railroad. They were married about 7 years and then divorced. He spent some time in a Jesuit monastery. He changed the spelling of his last name to CHECK. Curious to see if anyone has any further info regarding this couple.....

Thanks for the sites. I appreciate it.
Leo told his children of jumping ship. It is supported by a manifest from the ship Lithuania (sp?) It says he deserted. There is some talk that his family changed their name from a "ski" ending at an earlier time also.....he changed from CZECH to Check after he came to the USA.

You're welcome.

Can the word be deported instead deserted? Have you seen the manifest? He must have been an excellent swimmer :).
He changed the name because of pronounciation.
SKI would be Polish ending.

this is your ancestor in http://ssdi.rootsweb.com
LEO CHECK 24 Dec 1900 Oct 1983 23185 (Williamsburg, James City, VA) 23185 (Williamsburg, James City, VA) 708-09-8536 Long-time or retired railroad workers SS-5 Letter
His SS-5Form should have his place of birth and parents names.
Maybe he was born in vicinity of city of Gdansk and not in the city. You might want to search for his draft registration form, naturalization intent and petition, arrival manifest, state marriage application and church marriage record to confirm his place of birth so you can proceed further with the research.
