In the presence of William Hopwood+Emily Hopwood.The house
Number is not clear,but i think they were living at the same residence.
Benjamin Herbert Bullock/56 Lower Dudley Street,Wednesbury
17/2/1896 registered 10/4/1896.
I also have John Douglases birth cert,his fathers marriage cert.Benjamins marriage cert.Hope i have helped you

Hi Val. Nice to hear from a distant cousin.

I would appreciate the exact date and place of the marriage of John Douglas Bullock and Harriet Ann Cyples and also the exact date and location of their Son Benjamin's birth.

All I know at the moment is that John and Harriett married in 1889 and that Benjamin was born around 1895 in the area of Wolverhampton.

Hi All

I havd just been able to upload a photograph of my Great Grandparents wedding, Beatrice Cyples to John (Jack) Barker.

We can only identify the Brides Mother, Sarah Jane (Steele) Cyples but presume the gentleman to the left of the Bride is her father George.

We believe this photo to have been take in Middleport, Burslem.

Just wondering if anyone is able to identify anyone else from the Cyples family.

Hi,i have just contacted someone who is looking for people connected to Henry Cyples.
I have been researching my family lines for a number of years and have more or less done all i can with my research on them.
I have know started on my husbands family and found that his
2xgreatgrandfather John Douglas bullock was married to
Harriet Ann Cyples born in Wolverhampton in 1869 to Henry
Cyples born 1829 and Maryann Fradley born c1827 in Stone
Staffs.My husbands greatgrandfather was Benjamin Herbert Bullock born in 1896 in Wolverhampton.
Is this of any interest to you.

I have just started researching my husbands family lines.
His 2x greatgrandfather was John Douglas Bullock.His 2x greatgrandmother was Harriet Ann Cyples daugther of Henry
Cyples born 1829 Stoke ON Trent and Maryann Fradley born 1827 Stone Staffs.
Harriet Ann was born c1869 Wolverhampton.
I have copies of John and Harriets marriage cert and there son Benjamin Herberts, birth and marriage certs.

I am a great-Granddaughter of Ada Cyples (daughter of Edward Wilmot Cyples, son of Edward Cyples and Sarah). In the research I have done I believe that Sarah Cyples’s maiden name was Duncalf. I have her marriage certificate to Edward Wilmot where her name is given as “Duncarter”. In the censuses before her marriage I have found her surname to be written as “Carter” then earlier as “Duncalf”.

Sarah’s parents lived in Liverpool when they married, then moved to Crewe (where she was born), then to Warrington, then to Burslem. I’m not sure why there are so many variations on the surname though. Just thought any of their descendants might be interested to know what I have found.

Beatrice's 1st cousin, Henry Purcell Cyples was one of my uncles teachers. I understand from another contact that he was also a Wing Commander during the war.

Thank you so much for this information, I can't wait to tell my father who set me on the trail.

He recently found a wedding photograph of his Grandmother Beatrice, with George and Sarah his GGrandparents. Both Sarah and Beatrice lived into their 90th year.

I'm not sure where this trail will lead us to next but my father was told that George once played for the local football team Port Vale one Christmas Day, which has always intrigued him :-)

Hi Jane. Nice to hear from you. George Cyples of Burslem is my 3rd cousin from several generations back. He married Sarah Steele in 1889. His father was Edward Cyples and his mother was Sarah Doncaster. His parents married in 1865 at Sneyd, Holy Trinity. Edward was the son of Walter Cyples, who was the son of John, son of John, son of John, son of Joseph, son of Richard.

Current research suggests that Richard Cyples was the first person in Staffordshire to use the surname Cyples. His origins are currently unknown. The first record of him is in the parish registers of St Peters Church in Stoke where his son Joseph is baptised in October of that year. His wife Janae was buried at St. Peters a few days later. Richard was probably born in the 1670's.

Hi, my name is Jane Worthington from Staffordshire and I am very interested in the Cyples family threads from the Burslem, Stoke on Trent area.

My GGGrandfather was George Cyples (1871) the 4th child of Edward and Sarah Cyples of 63 Reid Street, Burslem.

George married Sarah Jane and moved to Maddock Street, Burslem where my Grand Grandma Beatrice was born 1893.

I would be interested in any information anyone could offer.

I saw your post on rootsweb from 5 years ago - I hope that is not to long ago for Crystal to still be intersted. . My mother-in-law's cousin was Maud Louisa Jevons who sailed out to Canada to help her Uncle Edward Dobbins Moore (mother-in-law's father)whom, I think, had some kind of shop. I wonder if your grandmother would know any stories about this.

My mother in law is now 88 and lives in the UK. We live in Tasmania.

Maud Louise Jevons is my mother-in-law's cousin. I am trying to locate the Canadian exploits of Maud's Uncle Edward Dobbins Moore. Maud went to Canada to help her Uncle in about 1913. I believe he had a shop of some kind. He had returned to the UK by 1919 where his eldest daughter my mother-in-law was born.

Any other information about the family is most welcome.

Hi Laura. It's taken me almost 5 years but I think I have solved this one. Was your grandfather born 9th January 1927? If so he was born under the name Richard Derrick Cyples the son of Richard Cyples and Florence Webb who married on 16th June 1919. Richard was born circa 1897 at Longton to William Cyples and Hannah Ray.

In answer to your first question the maiden name of my Grandma (Agnes) is Potts.
I'm not sure where they were married but I will find out!(I will also enquire about the marriage certificate)
My Grandad lived in East Vale(s-o-t), then in Sandford Hill(s-o-t), and was born in 1928.

If it's any help Derek's Father's name was Richard Cyples.

Thank you for the last information, the date of Gradfathers birth has settled my mind extremly, Has my father was telling me different information, mind you I cant expect him to remember everything these dayus now that he's 73.

I will ask him about Percy's brothers and sisters and see if he can remember who they married.
I will also ask dad if Percy later called up for full service due to other service number.

Earl how much would you charge for a scan of both Percy's birth and marriage certificates and also the birth certificate of his sister Ada.

percy cyples
annie cyples nee churchman
they arriganate from, Brierley Hill, Birmingham.
This is as far as my Father could tell me.

He was always under the impression that his father William's (1892) mother's maiden name was Glew so possibly there is some information there that can be uncovered. You have compiled some really interesting information. Maybe something can be uncovered regarding the "BURTON" connection as well as my father recalls his father speking of that often - if only we would have been more inquisitive. Great to hear from you.

I looked into the ancestry of Derek CYPLES in February 2000 when Edna Smith mentioned to me that you had been in contact with her.

I searched for your grandfather’s birth certificate from 1921 to 1930 but could find no reference to it at the General Record Office. Perhaps he was born a few years later?

If you are interested I will have another attempt at researching Derek. If you could answer the few questions below it will help me.

1) Do you know the maiden name of Agnes?

2) Do you know when and where Derek and Agnes married?

3) What part of Stoke on Trent did Derek live in.

One of the first things I will be doing is tracking down the marriage certificate of Derek and Agnes. Could you check to make sure no one in you immediate family has this before I try and get a copy from the General record Office.

Nice to hear from you. All the Cyples from Burslem that I have come acorss so far have all been descended from John Cyples born about 1792.
John married twice. He married Sarah Elkins at Bucknall in 1812 and Elizabeth Wallbank at Norton in 1818.
Although he had a large family most of the Cyples who later lived in Hanley and Burslem are descended from two of his sons, Walter and Richard.
John Cyples born about 1792 was almost certainly a grandson of John Cyples (1725-1784) although there is some debate as to whether his parents were John and Catherine Cyples or brother Edward Cyples and his wife Sarah.

If you know who your great grandfather was I may be able to tell you exactly how you connect to John.

Hi Glyn. Percy Cyples married Annie Churchman in the district of Stourbridge in the last three months of 1916. This information is from the General Register Office index of Births in London.
According to the index there first child seems to be Wilmot J Cyples
in 1922 followed by Frederick W Cyples in 1924.

I will send off for Percy Cyples marriage certificate, which will tell us the name of his father and Also Annie Churchman’s father.

Yes Percy was born on 25th November 1892 at Sparrow Street in Portshill (next to Burslem).

I have a copy of both Percy's birth and marriage certificates and also the birth certificate of his sister Ada.

The birth certificates of both Percy and Ada confirm their parents as Edward Wilmot CYPLES and Mary Jane DODD.

Edward Wilmot and Mary Jane DODD married in the Wolstanton District in the first three months of 1889.

The war time marriage certificate of Percy CYPLES and Annie CHURCHMAN from 1916, confirms that he was a Pottery Ware Decorator and that Annie worked in an ammunition works. It is this certificate where Percy gives his number in the 3rd North Staffords as 10200.

Perhaps the other number your father has is a later number from another regiment. The 3rd North Staffords was a Militia Regiment. Was Percy later called up for full service?

The marriage certificate also confirms that Percy was the son of Edward Wilmot Cyples and Percy gives his address as 16 Station Road, Brockmoor, Kingswinford on the certificate.

Do you know who Percy's brothers and sisters married. It will save me the time in looking them up.

Concerning this passage:

5. William Cyples. Born on 7 March 1892 in Parton, Whitehaven, Cumbria, England. William died in Gault, Ontario, Canada on 22 October 1977, he was 85.

immigrated about 1912

William married Maud Louise Jevons.

They had the following children:
6 i. J Edward
7 ii. Lawrence
8 iii. William Harold (~1919-1944)
** They also had a daughter named Lily, she is my grandmother. She lives in Cambridge, Ontario. Maud (my great-grandmother) passed away in 1988 (I believe) I will check on that and post again.
My grandmother would be so happy to hear from any of her family, so please reply!

Cyples - British Home Children

I have recently discovered that four of my ancesters were sent to Canada as Home Children, on SS Sardinian in April, 1888.They arrived in Halifax as part of a group of some two hundred or more to join a Miss Rye at Niagra on the Lake. Their names were Frederick,Albert,Henry and Len Cyples.Does anyone know what happened to them after their initial stay at the reception centre or where I can find out this information?

There is a Warrant Officer William Harold Cyples buried in Brookwood Military Cemetry, near London, England. He was killed on 17th November 1944.He is also mentioned in the Roll of Honour books kept in Ottawa ( I believe ). He was the son of William and Maud Cyples of Halifax N.S..Could there be a connection here?

I have been following your progress of establishing the connections with the ever growing Cyples family tree.Just out of a matter of interest, I visited Kranji War Cemetery in Singapore towards the end of last year, in search of the tablet marking the memorial to James Wilmot Cyples.As you probably know he was the son of Percy and Annie.He was killed on 26th September 1944 aged 22 years.At the time he was serving with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.
