Along with Kyra and Kathy's posts, I too have a Cypher ancestor in Butler County. His name is John Cypher born in 1831 to Matthias Cypher and Mary Rufner. I don't know much about these people. But all of these Cypher's in Butler County can't get be a coincidence, could it? Email me at BethS205@aol.com

This is a response to my original post 11 years ago. I have found out a little more about Mary Ruffner (1799-1880?), married to Mathias Cypher of Butler County, PA. On Mary's son's church marriage record, he (Sylvester Cypher) says his mother is "Mary Ruffner of Westmoreland County." So Mary was from Westmoreland Co. She may have meet her husband at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Sugarcreek which was where the Cypher's belonged. Also, on a land deed, Mary's middle name is Isabella. Her husband's sister, Ann Cypher, married a man named Peter Ruffner. We don't know anything about his background but we can only assume he was a brother or cousin of Mary Isabella Ruffner Cypher's. Peter and Ann lived out their lives in Hempfield, PA in Westmoreland Co. They are on the US Census there. Peter died first. It looks like Ann moved in with her son or grandson after his death and then between 1880 and 1900 she dies. Please fell free to email me. Any info on these Ruffners would be most helpful. Anyone who has this Peter Ruffner in your direct line, it would be interesting to compare trees.
