I posted a new post about this but I should respond to your post as well because I have a great-great-great grandfather named John Cypher born in 1831. He had a brother Matthias born in 1838. His parents were Matthias Cypher and Mary Rufner. I don't have dates on them yet. Any of this sound familar? There has got to be something fishy with all of these Cyphers in Butler County. It isn't like Cypher is a common name. You can email me at BethS205@aol.com..:)

all Im sure of is my great-grandfather (Emitt) who we think married a (Jenny) they had 10 children Frank, ken, albert, eugene, Anna, Belle, Laura, Olive, and my grandfather Robert. I recieved information from someone who said Emitt was married to a Annie S. and had 5 children...Minna Etta, Emmitt, Charles, Matilda, Porus. Im not sure what is accurate. My family is currently in Murrysville, Pennsylvania. Do you think theres a connection?

They are not just concentrated in Butler County but also in Allegheny Co. You are right...it is not a common name. It's unusual to find "Cypher" in other parts of the US. Everywhere I travel, I always check the local phone books. There is also a small group of Cyphers in Australia.

I talked briefly with my mother. She said that my grandfather said there was a branch of our family in Butler. We're from Allegheny County. Pgh., McKeesRock, Clairton, Elizabeth, etc. An interesting note about the Butler County Cyphers. There are two Cyphers from CA...Charles Cypher and Jon (sp?) Cypher. You may know them from a lot of the John Carpenter's movies...Halloween, Escape from NY, etc., The Fog. Both of these men are from the Butler County Cyphers.
