What is the proper pronunciation of the name? My clan in Pittsburgh, PA pronounce it like "swinner." Any Polish people in the D.C. area that I have asked think that it is not a Polish name.

Hi ! I come from Poland. In Poland the pronounciation goes as follows. C - like in "Center" than "V" like in victory than "y" like in Vintage than "nar " like in narrow so it looks like "Cvinarr" but also for Polish people it is difficult to pronounce. I rember that being in schhol i was very angry since many teachers mipronounced my name saing "Cveenarr" with long i after v

That's great, thanks Marek. Good to know the name is mispronounced all over the world! Have you heard anything about its origin? And do you know many Cwynar's in Poland? I heard once from someone in the UK (Maria) who went to visit her mother in Poland who is also a Cwynar. She explained the name like this: "The pronunciation "Swy-nahr" is, I guess, as close to the original as possible in the circumstances! Let me just make sure once again that I have conveyed the sound correctly: the "i" in the first syllable "Tsvi-" should sound short like in "wit". Polish pronunciation is generally very difficult to the English speakers, so anyone wanting to keep their Polish connections alive has my respect and admiration."
