My mother's maiden name is Cwynar, she comes from Eastern Poland and the tradition in her father's family maintains that the name comes from Swedish settlers after the Swedish-Polish wars of succession (17th century) and could possibly be derived from the Swedish first name Sven. I should be interested to know if anyone else has any information on this matter.

The same story was told to me by my father. I was also told that near Lancut in Poland there there is small vilage Wysoka (in Polish in means high place) where the majority of inhabitans name is Cwynar. Unfortunately I have never been in Wysoka to check that teory

I was born a New Castle Cwynar. There used to be more Cwynar's in New Castle than Smith's. When the steel industry collapsed in the mid 80's the town pretty much shut down and a lot of Cwynar's (including my family) moved away. I had a friend that was straight off the boat from Serbia who said he knew people with my last name from his old country, and most of the people came from the Poland/Ukraine boarder. He said the name is pronounced Sveener. I also read about a WWII pilot Ace named Michael Cwynar (my 12yr old son's name btw) that lived in Lviv, Ukraine. Hope this helps.
