Cwiklinski family: Germany/Poland; Pittsburgh, Pa; Portage County, WI
Searching for information on the Cwiklinski tree. So far, I have Nick Cwiklinski born in 1818 in Germany/Poland. The only known children are Joseph, Augustina Konopacki and Mrs. Albert Modrzynski.
The death certificate of Augustina lists Nick Cwiklinski as her father. Her obit says: Mrs. Augustina Konopacki, who came to Portage county from her native home, Poland, more than forty years ago, locating on a farm in the town of Sharon, where she lived until the death of her husband, John Konopacki, 27 years ago, passed away at 7:50 Wednesday evening at the home of a son, Franik B. Konopacki, 345 Franklin Street. The deceased would have been 76 years of age on the 26th of next August. Death resulted from paralysis, following a short illness. The family includes another son and two daughters, Stanley Konopacki and Mrs. Stacia Zoborowski of this city and Mrs. Victor Konopacki of Nekoosa. Funeral services will be held at St. Peter's church at 8:30 Saturday morning, with interment in Guardian Angel cemetery. (July 7, 1927, Stevens Point Daily Journal)
I found Joseph Cwiklinski on the 1900 census for Sharon, Portage County, WI. Also listed is his wife, Francis; children, Helena, Josephine and Peter; and his father, Nick. Also found the Joseph's family in 1920 in Sharon. His two daughters and father are not listed.
Joseph's obit states: Joseph Cwiklinski, a farmer who resided for many years in the town of Alban, died at his home Friday morning at 8:45 o'clock. Mr. Cwiklinski had been an invalid since last fall, suffering with heart trouble and dropsy. He was born in Poland 62 years ago and emigrated to America when a young boy, locating at Pittsburg, PA, which was his home for 20 years. The family then came to Portage county and settled on a farm in Alban. Surviving are the widow, one son, Peter and two daughters, Mrs. Frank Jagla of Rosholt and Mrs. Charles Hoppa of Bevent. One sister of the deceased, Mrs. Augusta Konopacki, lives in this city and another sister, Mrs. Albert Modrzynski, is a resident of Pittsburg. (April 26, 1922, Stevens Point Gazette)
(A social security application for Peter Cwiklinski shows him to be the son of Joseph Cwiklinski and Frances Szram.)
Does anyone have anything on this family?

Re: Cwiklinski family: Germany/Poland; Pittsburgh, Pa; Portage County, WI
I am researching my husbands family tree. His grandmother Clara Hoppa Resnick is the daughter of Charles Hoppa who was married to Helen Cwiklinski. I found Joseph, Peter and Helen Cwiklinski on the Stevens Point Area Obituary Index. They are on the web at http://library.uwsp.edu/obits They also have a cemetery information link. Helen is also in the 1910 Fed Census, Wisconsin,Marathon County, Pike Lake Twp with husband Charles Hoppa listed as born in Pennsylvania. Let me know if I can help.

Re: Cwiklinski family: Germany/Poland; Pittsburgh, Pa; Portage County, WI
The Cwiklinski's are on my husband's side as well. Augustina, Joseph Cwiklinski's sister, is my husband's great, great grandmother. She married John Konopacki. I was surprised to find that part of the family migrated to Pennsylvania before coming to Wisconsin. Joseph's obit even named a sister that still lived there. According to my information, John and Augustina came directly from Poland to Wisconsin. In my other message, I stated that their father was Nick Cwiklinski. I found that information on Augustina's death certificate and a "Nick" was living in the Joseph Cwiklinski household in 1900 that would have been the right age as the father. Have you found anything that points to a Nick or Nicolas being the father of Joseph?
Here is a bit about our end of the family tree: Augustina Cwiklinski was born August 26, 1852 in Poland. She married John (Jan) Konopacki about 1874 in Poland. John was born December 25, 1849. They traveled came to America about 1887 and settled in Sharon Township, Portage County, WI. At the time, they had three children: Frank, Stanley and Helen. They had a farm in Polonia. Their children; Martha, Anastacia and Bernard were born in the U.S. Stanley is my husband's great grandfather. John Konopacki died Feb. 6, 1900 and was buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Polonia, WI. Augustina died July 27, 1927 and was buried in Guardian Angel Cemetery in Stevens Point, WI.

Re: Cwiklinski family: Germany/Poland; Pittsburgh, Pa; Portage County, WI
Thank you for the information. At this time I am unaware of who the father of Joseph was. When I was looking for Helen I came across a census with the surname in New York. Perhaps this was just after they left Germany/Poland and came through the NY Port and then lived in Pennsylvania awhile. Have you checked the Pennsylvania Census for the Cwiklinski surname? I have only been working on these family names for a short time.

I haven't found anything in Pennsylvania, but then with Polish names, you sometimes have to be creative with the spelling in order to find anything. Joseph's obit stated that he came to America when he was a young boy and he made Pittsburgh his home for twenty years. He was 62 years old in 1922, when he died, so he was born about 1860. In round numbers, maybe he came to America when he was ten which would have been about 1870. If he was there for 20 years then he probably would have been on the 1880 census. I haven't found him yet. I have notes in my file from the 1920 census. According to the census, he supposedly came to America in 1884 and was naturalized in 1890. Frances, his wife, came to the U.S. in 1883 and was also naturalized in 1890. I don't know if they were in Wisconsin in 1890. If they were, then the naturalization papers might be in Portage County. It could very well be that they were naturalized when they were married and in that case, I suspect they were still in Pennsylvania.
I found Peter Cwiklinski's WWI Draft Registration. On the registration card, his birthdate was June 1, 1894. His birthplace was Polonia, WI. At least by 1894, the family was in Portage County.

Re: Cwiklinski family: Germany/Poland; Pittsburgh, Pa; Portage County, WI
Hi, I was thinking maybe we should look at the census in Marathon County, Wisconsin. Helen Cwilinski married Charles Hoppa who came from the Bevent/Pike Lake area which is in Marathon County, Wisconsin. I believe Polonia was not that far away and they may have traveled to a central place like a Polish church. Marathon County is North of Portage County. I also checked the LDS site and I found Helena Cwiklinski birth 26 Sep 1890, Pittsburgh, Allegheny, PA and the parents are named as Frank Cwiklinski and Anastasia Sprengel. Also a marriage for Joseph Cwiklinski to Francisca Makwa the date 13 Dec 1889, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It names his parents as Joseph Cwiklinski and Frances Rugornska. I am hoping this will help us to put more pieces together. I will check more in Marathon Cty. Do you have any other names to check in that area?

Most of the names that I have only pertain to Portage County, but checking Marathon is a good idea. Let me know if you come up with anything. The info that you found on the LDS site is interesting.

Re: Cwiklinski family: Germany/Poland; Pittsburgh, Pa; Portage County, WI
Interesting as in "This throws a wrensch in to who I thought was the correct people?" Anyway I checked Ancestry and there definitely are Cwiklinskis with simular names living in Pittsburgh PA in 1910 Census. John Cwiklinski Age 65 and a Frances Cwiklinski Age 55 and a few more names that look like Cwiklinski on the same page. Maybe this is a brother or ? to our Portage families? These are the hardest surnames to ferret out. I will keep looking..............

I've restarted my search for more info on this family....prompted by a family reunion in Pittsburgh. If you have any interest in this line, let me know...I will try to help.
