My grandfather name was James Edward Cuzner. He was born in Hamilton Onterio Canada. His fathers name was Luke, his mother maiden name was Ann Engleman. I believe my grandfather had 12 siblings. He had a brother Luke who was killed in WW1. Another brother Lloyd, who had a son named Ross. Ross was killed in WW2. (Ross was the only male sibling of his brothers) He had a brother Mark who had no children. He had several sisters that had children that still live in Hamilton. I have lost contact with those in Canada many many years ago

Hello, Donald,
I think your CUZNER line is likely descended from James & Hannah AYRES CUZNER who emigrated from Frome, Somerset, England to Canada in 1831.

My files have James & Hannah's son, John CUZNER, raising a large family in Hamilton, including a son, Luke CUZNER, who was born Sept 1, 1857 and who married Ann ENGLEMAN.

I'd be pleased to exchange information with you, to confirm the connection, and to add to what we each know.

I have some information on the Cuzner family. Edith Cuzner was my great-grandmother, whom I remember as very a small child. She married John Wallace and moved to Sherrill. I also met her brother (g-g-uncle Mark) at family reunion in the 70s before he passed. My grandmother gave me information on some of Edith's sisters when I was a young girl. Perhaps we could exchange information.

Edith Cuzner Wallace was my Great Aunt. Although she lived just 3 miles from me when I was growning up I very seldom saw her. I really know very little about the Cuzner family so please let me know what you have. My email is dseely1@adelphia.net. Looking to hear from you

Sandra,

Do you have any information on James Cuzners parents. Looking at the FSJ register, there are two candidates for his parents: William and Sarah or Bladud and Sarah. Lucas and Grace (Morris) Cuzner also had two sons named James who would be good candidates (given the luke connection in this family) except that they both died in childhood it appears.

Hi Steve,
No, I don't know who James CUZNER's parents were, though I have wondered from time to time if Lucas CUZNER and Grace MORRIS perhaps had a third son named James who did survive and was baptized later (or not at all). This is just speculation on my part, fueled by the fact that James CUZNER and Hannah AYRES were slow to have many of their children baptized.

The letter that 15-year-old Mary Ann CUZNER wrote home to Frome in 1831 says "Please to give my father's and mother's love to John Cuzner, his wife, and family." and also mentions her cousin Susan (no surname).

I had thought that the James CUZNER who was the son of Bladad CUZNER and Sarah HARRIS bapt 1773 was likely to be too old to be the James CUZNER who died in Canada in 1858.

Can you tell me more please about the James CUZNER who was the son of William and Sarah?

Thanks, Sandra

Hi Sandra,

I don't have much. If you do a search for James Cuzner on freereg.org.uk there are only two that possibly fit: Bladud and Sarah in 1773 and William and Sarah in 1787, which is the better fit from a date perspective. If that were the case, he would have been 71 at his death which seems reasonable. It also fits with his military service of 13 years in the Royal Marines, Seven years on a ship and seven years in the "Merican War" which I assume is the war of 1812. Boys served in the Navy, but I would expect that to be a Marine you would have to be older, probably 17 at least which would be about 1805. So if he was on a ship from 1805 to 1812, then off to Canada for 6 more (two years in the war and 4 after) He would be back in England in 1816 right when he and Hannah start having children, so this makes for a good timeline.

So basically, considerable assumption and is predicated on James actually being christened and/or the register/transcription being complete and accurate. There is plenty of evidence that many people were not registered and there were plenty who were non-conformists.

William Cuzner and Sarah Guy were married 30 Sep 1782 at FSJ and have the following children christened at FSJ:

William 1783
William 1785
James 1787
Jeremiah 1789
Stephen 1792
Harry 1794
Sarah 1797

No John in the family, but there are many John Cuzners running around Frome at that time (I spent months gathering documents to differentiate the two Johns christened within 6 months of each other in 1790, one the son of John And Rebecca and the other the son of John and Naomi). I'll need to trace these siblings and see if I can find one of them having a child names Susan who could fit as a cousin for Mary Ann.

I trace my line to John and Mary (Greenland) Cuzner who were married in 1791 at FSJ. I believe that John could be the son of a William and Mary, but that is pure speculation at this point.

Where did you get the letter? All I've ever seen of them is brief quotes.
