Surnames: Cuyle
Hi All,

I am doing some family research on the Cuyle's. The earliest descendant that I can locate is Samuel Cuyle (b. 1791) of NY. Does anyone have any information about his parents or about where the Cuyle surname originated? My grandmother believes that the name comes from Belgium. Can anyone confirm this? When did the Cuyles migrate to America? Any info that you provide me with would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Laura Ginchereau

Samuel Cuyle is the earliest Cuyle I've been able to locate also. Well, that's not true. I found an Ephriam Cuyle in the 1800 census in Otsego, Otsego County, New York and again in the 1820 census in Elmira, Tioga County, New York (spelled Kyle). I believe he is the father of 'my' Samuel and also of James B. Cuyle, but I've never been able to prove it. My father-in-law's cousin said Cuyles originally came from England, but I've never seen any Cuyle immigrants from England. The only Cuyle immigrants I've seen are from Ireland. There are also Van deCuyle's from the Netherlands. I have quite a lot of information on the descendants of Samuel and James B., and would be glad to exchange information with you.

I'd love to know more. Any family history or stories that you can provide me with would be wonderful. I read about the Anti-Rent War though I'm not sure that I understand Samuel's part in it.

If there's anything that I can tell you that you don't already know I would be happy to. Here's what I know as far as my direct relatives go:

Samuel Cuyle + Margaret (Peggy) Bunn
|
James Bunn Cuyle + Rachel Ann Jones
|
Frederick Cuyle + Mary Rebecca Hontz
|
Charles Cuyle + Carrie Heater
|
Mildred Cuyle (my paternal grandmother)

YES!! Except it's JACOB Bunn Cuyle and Rachel Ann Jones. If you'll e-mail me directly at bjcuyle@lightlink.com, I'll send you a report on the descendants of Jacob Bunn Cuyle (including sources), and we can work together from there.

Jacob and Rachel and some of their children are buried in Masonville and I have pictures of their gravestones which I can send to you.
