Yes, Chester did leave his research with the Castor Association of America (CAOA). The email address is caoaboard@caoa-gen.org. The CAOA has an archives accessible to members by appointment or inquiries may be made to the Archive Coordinator (currently Patricia Caster). The membership fee for new members is $20 annually. Another benefit of membership is the quarterly newsletter.
The CAOA surnames are all derivatives and spellings of Caster such as Custer, Koester, Custard, Kester, Keister etc. etc.

I do have a picture of her brother George Armstrong Custer as a very young man and her sister Rebecca Jane Custer- Heptinstall as an elderly woman. I also have information on all of her brothers and sisters, including Virginia Catherine Custer-Witten, the birth mother of John Walter"Dr Jack"Witten. chansen3@tampabay.rr.com

I believe that William Custard, born 1799 was son of William Custard, 1760-1835 married to Patience Rush, 1753-1835. William Sr. was a sergeant in Continental Army from Bucks County, PA.
I think they were Custards, although William Custard's daughter, my ancestor, is sometimes listed as Mercy Elizabeth Custred. But in DAR, it is spelled Custard.

Wm Custard Cemetery Plot

A group of WILLIAM CUSTARD (b. 1810 OH d. 1895 TX) descendants is in the process of repairing headstones and placing informative markers on the cemetery plot in Austin, Texas where William, his first wife, and 3 of his children are buried. Age (tree limbs broke off two headstones and water have obliterated lettering) has deteriorated the tombstones. We will put a marker with historical info on William who was a citizen, soldier, and builder of the Republic of Texas. The more descendants contributing to this project, the less it will cost each indivdually. Please join us in this project to commemorate our ancestor and recognize his contributions to Texas and U.S. history. Contact me at tucker@pgrb.com and I'll send you an email with photos of the project. Teresa.

Re: Custard mitchondrial DNA study

The Castor Association of America has just posted their DNA Project on their web site at http://www.rootsweb.com/~caoa/dnaproj/dna_main.htm . At this time no tests have been received for any mitocholdrial tests. I can't think of any reason why the results could not be posted at our site.

The mitocholdrial tests will not show the Custard line of descent as it follows the female line of descent. Since females surnames change with marriage it will be difficult to trace the line once you reach a female ancestor whose maiden name is unknown.

One of the test results we have received so far is for a descendant of William Custard (1729-1786), who we believe is the grandfather of of the William Custard who married Mary Bell first and Clarinda Stanfield second. We believe William (1729-1786) to be a descendant of George Custard who is a descendant of Paulus Kusters.

This test is very promising in supporting the relationship between William Custard (1729-1786) and Paulus Kusters. There is are only 3 mutations between those results and the results for a descendant through Paulus Kuster's son Hermanus. The 3 mutations suggest a common ancestor about 17 generations back.

The person tested is a descendant of Benjamin Custard who may be the brother of your William. We need a direct male descendant of the William and Mary Bell or William and Clarinda Stanfield line in order to verify the connection.

You can see it more clearly on the web site, which is still under construction.

P.

I descend from Susan Custard/Custer, married to Benjamin Marshall Little, sister of Mary Catherine, daughter of William Custard and Clarinda Stanfield. I haven't been able to find anything on William Custard's parents either. I believe my mother has a picture of Catherine Custard Little with Daniel and George Little on the front porch of their house. If you are interested in a copy, contact me at cammirati@psu.edu. We would be delighted to send you one.

One thing you hadn't mentioned was that William Custard first married Mary Ann Bell who died 1 Oct 1851 in Austin TX. Their children were William (b.1847), Mary (b. 1849) and Walter Allen (b. 1851). Then after the death of his first wife, William Custard married Clarinda Stanfield (b. 1838 TN) 22 May 1855 in Austin, TX. I just wanted to make sure you had that information as well.
Sincerely
Christie Ammirati

Custard mitchondrial DNA study

I was curious if anyone knew of a Custard mitochondrial DNA study. My gr gr gr grandmother was Susan Custard [1856-1936] wife of Benjamin Little, daughter of William and Clarinda Stanfield Custard. It would be fun to compare results if anyone else with a direct female Custard ancestor has submitted their mitochondrial DNA for analysis.
Sincerely
Christie Ammirati

We are in possession of a handwritten receipt book compiled by a Catherine Robbins dated from 1866 to 1886, from the Philadelphia area. Could there be any connection? There seems to be a connection to the Adolf Saba Sulfur Company in Philadelpha in 1866.

Really, I posted that message for my friend Judy, who is in possession of the book. It seems to be a book of all kinds of receipts, including mortgage payments, as this person seemed to hold at least two mortgages for people. The payments were made through an attorney. She has copies of the letters from the attorney as well. From the looks of the receipts, perhaps she was a widow or a single woman, as there is no husband mentioned. I will forward your posting to my friend Judy.

This is the family information I have:

John VanCamp Custard was the son of William Custard, Jr., [B. 1775, christened 6-8-1777 at Walpack Dutch Reformed Church, Walpack, Sussex Co., NJ, D. 12-29-1862 - age 87 years, Pike County, PA.]

William married on 1-10-1801[Probably at Walpack Dutch Reformed Church] Elizabeth Van Campen, [B. 1764; Probably in Sussex Co., NJ, and D. 8-7-1830 - age 66 years, 9 mo., 20 days, Pike Co., PA]. She was the daughter of Judge John (Jan) Van Campen, B. 10-31-1725 [son of Gerrit Van Campen and Elizabeth Depuy, B. 11-23-1746]. William and Elizabeth's children were: Benjamin (7-3-1803), Susanna (1-12-1805) m. William Place, Sarah (2-18-1807) m. William Porter, William III (6-9-1809) died in childhood, John VanCamp (11-17-1813) m. Susanna Heller, Elizabeth (7-9-1820) m. John Hannah, Mason (twin: 1-22-1824) m. Margaretha or Margarthea ____ , Cyrus (twin: 1-23-1824) m. Frances ____, and Francis M. (1826). William and Elizabeth are buried in Valleyview/Swartwood Cemetery.

John Van Camp Custard, [B. 11-17-1813 in Smithfield Twp., Pike Co., PA and christened 12-6-1824 at the Walpack Dutch Reformed Church, Sussex Co., NJ], married in or about 1829-30 Susanna Heller, B. 9-3-1814. She was a daughter of Michael Heller, B. Hamilton Twp., Monroe, PA, and Elizabeth DePue, B. 7-18-1793 Pahaquarry, Warren, NJ. Michael Heller was the son of Johan Michael Heller, son of Johan Christoph Heller who came to the US in 1738 on the ship “Galley” from Pfedersheim, GE. John and Susanna's children were: Ololus (1830-dec. in infancy), William III (1831), John Arnold Dimmick (1833) m. Emily Ellen Price, Maria J. (1836), Charles S. (1845), and Elizabeth (1847). John and Susanna’s graves are most likely in Valleyview/Swartwood Cemetery, although no stones can be found.

John VanCamp Custard, my paternal gg-grandfather married Susanna Heller. Their son, John Arnold Dimmick Custard, my paternal g-grandfather, married Emily Ellen Price. And their son, Mahlon Price Custer, my paternal grandfather, married Marion Cronin of CT. Mahlon and Marion's son, Charles Judson Price Custer, my father, married Clarice Ruth Cole.

To my knowledge, John VanCamp Custard never dropped his last name or live anywhere else but Egypt Mills above Bushkill, Lehman Twp., Pike County, PA.

See more of the Van Campen family history online at the Sussex Co. Historical Society, sub-text, “History of Montague Township” and at the Walpack Historical Society, Walpack Center, NJ. Search both the Abraham and the Isaac Van Campen lines for your connection.

Dear Christie,

I was v interested read your message. I have registered my surname as a one name study in the UK and am interested in any links world wide. DNA is still in its infancy here and is expensive but coming down in price. If you hear of any studies I'd be interested. I am especially interested in any Custard families from the US who originated in the UK, most of them do have Germany origins from Custer/Kuster, as maybe in your case.
Thank you for that information re William's survival to 1831. So far as I know, the family home was Bushkill, Lehman Township, Pike County, PA. I know of no place called "Bennekill." Also, how could William have been baptised before he was born?

I'm searching for a marriage date and place of John Arnold Dimmick Custard (1830), son of John VanCamp Custard and Susanna Heller, to Emily Ellen Price (1834), daughter of Charles Price and his cousin Phila Price. Their oldest surviving child was born or baptised in 1860. Although the Custards were from Pike County, the Prices were from Monroe County. Any assistance in this search would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I've just read your reply to my post - haven't been getting notifications because I changed my email address and neglected to update it at Rootsweb. It is nice to hear from another of William's descendants. William is buried in Oakwood Cemtery in Austin, Texas near his son Dan (he later had another son named Daniel) and an infant daughter and son. He is also buried beside his first wife, Mrs. Mary Ann Bell and she is buried beside her first husband, William Bell. The tombstones are in bad shape and several of William Custard's descendants are beginning the restoration process for this little Custard plot. ANYONE INTERESTED IN helping, please email at tucker@pgrb.com and I'll send you an email with photos and details of the planned work.

Re: Jane Custard

Jannat [also spelled "Jannetje"] Custard was the daughter of William Custard [B. 1729 in Upper Smithfield, Philadelphia, PA] and Sara Swartwoud [B. 1735 also in Upper Smithfield, Philadelphia, PA]. Jannat was baptised at the Dutch Reformed Church of Walpack, Sussex County, NJ on May 1, 1752 and also married there on June 10, 1777. The baptismal date would have fallen on the first Sunday of the month, so her birth date is unknown. It also appears that several of the children were baptised on the same date, travel being what it was. Her father, William, was the son of Conrad Kuster and Susanna Adams, daughter of Richard Adams and Gertien Op den Graef. Conrad was the son of Arnold Kuster and [possibly] Gertrut Conrads, who died in Germany, or Elizabeth Rebecca Sellen [alternately Rebecca Nuzam]. Jannat's mother, Sara Swartwout, was the daughter of Bernardus Swartwout [B. 10-31-1697] and Grietjen Margaret Decker [B. 3-31-1700]. The Swartwouts came down from Esopus [Kingston], NY with other Dutch families to settle in Sussex County, NJ. Jannat's brother, William, Jr. [B. 1775], was my ggg-grandfather. The Custard/Swartwout family graves are located together in Valleyview/Swartwout Cemetery, above Route 209 in Bushkill, Pike County, PA on what is now federally-owned land. The Custard farms of Wm.
