Aliol or Abel or ?? Cushman born Ohio abt 1826

I am trying to trace GGGF listed on 1850 Census in Nashville, TN as Aliol Cushman b 1826 Ohio, working in Nashville as a cigar maker. Married Elizabeth Bryant of Virginia with son William A. Cushman b 1849 in TN. I find his death in Christian County, KY in 1856 listed as Abel Cashman b abt 1827 Ohio, cigar maker, of consumption. Death record lists Wm H. Cashman as father. Elizabeth Bryant Cushman and son William A. Cushman appear on 1860 census in Christian County, Ky. Anyone with info on possible origins and correct name of "Aliol" or "Abel" Cushman please respond.

I would like to say the cushmans in Indiana seem to all be very tall and having big foreheads and large boned with degrees in engineering. Like I said before I saw a picture from the famous womens museum in Florida of that famous Cushman actress. She also has a large broad face and large forehead. There are resemblances.

My mother's father was Harry Marvin Meech. His parents were Harry Garfield Meech and Frances Nancy Fisher. Frances Fisher's were William Fisher and Mary Cushman. William Fisher was born in NY about 1844 and Mary Cushman was born in Canada on 3 Jun 1844. At some point which I haven't found yet the Cushman's immigrated to Michigan in the Otsego area. I found them in the 1860 census. The Fisher's moved to the Richland area of Michigan somewhere between 1850 and 1860 since they were in NY in the 1850 census and Michigan in 1860. I have a picture of Mary taken in 1906 but do not have a date when she died.

The picture I have of William Cushman and Alice Corbett was taken in 1916. It was taken in a photo studio but I don't know where. It was in amongst a bunch of old family photos.

The picture of Chloe Cushman I figure was taken around 1920 since my g-grandfather Harry Garfield Meech and a young Harry Marvin Meech (my grandfather) are in it with an unknown man. I have these pictures on my computer and can attach them in a e-mail if you think that might help.
Solomon Cushman Jr and Sr. conn, vt, and ny

Tacing down a connection from my Cushman line to to a potential side. I'm looking for the descendants of Solomon Cushman Jr. (1775-died potentally after the 1860 census in Floyd NY). have a fairly solid lead but am looking for confrmation. There are some points that are sticking and want resolution. Like i said, this is a side line to my own line. My line is farly well documented to the Mayflower. the potential split being at Solomon Cushman Sr (2/17/1734-2/1814) and his sons. My line going through Job, and the line I am researching potentially going through Solomon Cushman Jr. Need to confirm Solomon Jr's second wife as listed in Henry Wyles Cushman's book. It is somewhat conisstent with census records from 1820-1860. But it is not conisstent wth death recorords. Also need their chldren. Chldren were not listed on the census' until 1850, only counted prior to that. If you are a descendant of Solomon Jr, please contact me. We have made a lot of head way on this in just the last month and with your help we can finalize this by the begining of the new year.

Merry Christmas to you all.
Tom

Cushman/Corbett pictures

I've got copies of three pictures that have ties to the Cushman family. As some background information my mother's father's mother's mother was Mary Cushman. I have three pictures that my grandfather was going to throw out but I was able to get him to let me have them.

Picture #1 shows a William Cushman seated with an Alice Corbett at his side. I believe this may be a picture of father and daughter but can't be sure.

Picture #2 is of a Fred and Allie Corbett. Is Allie and Alice one in the same?

Picture #3 shows a Chloe Cushman and I believe her husband alongside my g-grandfather and grandfather. No name on the man standing next to Chloe but I believe it to be her husband.

Our family lived in Michigan so I believe these pictures may be in Michigan or possibly Canada since my gg-grandmother, Mary Cushman was born in Canada as well as my g-grandfathers (Meech). I'm hoping that someone out there may recognize the name relationships and can put 2 and 2 together for me. Any input is greatly appreciated. Also I have these pictures scanned into my computer so if someone were interested in seeing them I can attach them in an e-mail.

I have his parents as James Cushman (b c1785, d aft 1853) and Elizabeth Woodward (born c1784/85, died aft 1860).
"Son"'s brother, Nathanial Cushman Sr, is my ancestor.
If you would like to exchange more information please contact me at dbrit89828@aol.com.

Jonnie

Hi Bob, this gets complicated quickly because of the multiple people named Jacob Cushman. Maybe it would help if I go back a generation.

Noah Cushman, b. 1745, Middleborough and d. 1818, Middleborough had three wives and I'm descended from Mercy Soule, b. 1748, Halifax, MA and d. 1788, Middleborough.

One of their sons was Jacob Cushman, b. 1771, Middleborough. He had a child with Sarah Besse but they didn't marry. Sarah Besse was b. 1773, Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA. She later married Gideon Maxham (b. 1766, Plympton and died 1854, Pomfret, Windsor Co., VT). She died 1857, Royalton, Windsor Co., VT.

Jacob and Sarah's illigitimate child Jacob Cushman was b. 1792 Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., MA and d. 1870, Newell, Coon Township, Buena Vista Co., IA. His first wife was Sabrina Moore b. abt. 1794, Vermont and she died 1839, Worcester, Vermont. I'm descended from them.

Jacob Cushman (1771-1850) married Sylvia Thomas 30 June 1796, Middleboro, Plymouth Co., MA and moved to Rhode Island. Their first child was Jacob Cushman, b. 27 July 1797, Bristol, Bristol Co., RI. This Jacob married Roxy Shaw 22 March 1824 but I don't know where.

I have all the documentation for anyone who is interested. The someone in Lori's 2006 statement was me. However, I must acknowledge the help of David Cook in finding the court records and helping me to unravel the mystery.
I have a correction to make to my posting. My Jacob Cushman was born 1792 in Bridgewater, Plymouth Co., Mass. as an illegitimate son of Jacob Cushman (1771, Mass=1850 R.I.) and Sarah Besse.

I have found the info on my Jacob's parents but now I'm stuck on his wife, Sabrina Moore. She was born abt. 1794, Vermont and their married 13 Jan 1819, Pomfret, Windsor Co., VT. She then died 1839, Worcester, Vermont.

I need to find where and when she was born but can't find her anywhere. Any help appreciated.

Hi Judy: I have slightly different info concerning Jacob's significant other. I have her named Sabrina Besse and I have Jacob, b. 27 Jul 1797 as child of Sylvia Thomas (according to HW Cushman book). . Descendant Lorri Anzini, daughter of Karleen Cushman, writes (1 Ju;y 2006) : “I started getting involved with our family tree….and found several obstacles…especially the connection of Jacob Cushman. It wasn’t until about 4 months ago, someone found the court records directing Jacob Cushman (born in Middleborough Mass 1771) to pay Sabrina Besse child support for infant son, Jacob born . She was known as Sabrina Cushman (we have found no records of a marriage, but was recorded in court records as Sarah Besse) until she married Gideon Maxham in Pomfret, Vt. Her e-mail address is lanzini@hughes.net. You might exchange e-mail with her about this. I have Jacob Cushman, b. 27 Jul 1797 married to Roxy Shaw on 22 Mar 1824, and three children: George Harris b. 11 mar 1830; James b Jun 1826; and William Jacob b. 1 mar 1838. You can see the detail at the Cushman Genealogy site. http://homepage.mac.com/cushgen/Cushman_Gen_site/Home_Page.h...
Best,
Robert Cushman
CushmanDNA@aol.com

I haven't been on this site in 7 yrs. so I hope you still look at it! I think Franklin Cushman that is my g-g-g-grandfather was born around 1828 like the one you list. He was married to Harriet L Pierce and he was born in Massachusetts. I don't have a record yet of his death but I know he lived in Manchester in Washtenaw County, MI in 1860 then in Fairfield, Shiawassee County, MI in 1870 and 1880.
My g-g-grandfather was his son, Joseph.
The 1860 census would have Franklin born in 1828, 1870 census would have him born in 1826 and the 1880 census would have him born in 1827....?!
Hope you can help me!
Does this sound like the lineage you have that gets us to Franklin's dad and to Thomas the shipbuilder (of the Mayflower)?
Thank you,
Terry

Also, my son is now residing in Boston (Beacon Hill area) and I wondered where I might be able to have him go to find out more about the lineage connection from Franklin to Thomas.
Also, can you tell me the lineage of Frank to Thomas and Richard? Was Richard Thomas' father or vice versa. Who was Franklin's father (and mother)?
I hope you still check this site.
Cushman of Oneida and Lewis Counties, NY

My g-grandmother was Jessie J Cushman b. 1872, daughter of Ebenezer Cushman b.1827 and Elizabeth Bond b. 1833. Ebenezer was the son of John Perkins Cushman b. 1807 of Vermont and Polly Wyman b. 1803. They lived in New Breman, Lewis County, NY and Lee, Oneida, NY. In my searches I find Ebenezer and Elizabeth's children listed as William, Myron, Jennie and Ella, but never Jessie, who was the youngest, however, in the 1900 Census Elizabeth (entered as Siby) states she has 2 living children out of 5. After Ebenezer died, Elizabeth lived with Jessie and her husband in Seattle (1910 Census) and I remember stories my grandmother told me about her grandmother. Can anyone tell me if this Ebenezer Cushman is related to the Robert Cushman b. 1577 of the Plymouth settlement from the Mayflower?

Re: Seneca Co., NY 1788

Tried sending you direct via Juno and it came back undeliverable. Here is a copy of what I wrote.

Hello again! Always a delight to find an unknown cousin. Are you a La Duke descendant or married into the La Dukes? Gahazi Hart had 2 children who survived to adulthood. My geat grandfather was the son, James Henry Hart, and his sister was Lorinda Granger Hart. During the Civil War, James Henry enlisted in the Ohio cavalry along with his good friend, Louis La Duke. Louis was courting Lorinda at the time and James Henry wrote letters to his sister on Louis' behalf, apparently because Louis couldn't write himself. At the same time, Lorinda kept a diary recording her activities helping Gahazi run the farm. During that year, Louis returned from the war and married Lorinda. The progeny of Louis and Lorinda are many to say the least. This has been painstakingly documented by cousin Lois Schroeder and published by her. The diaries of Lorinda and James Henry are reproduced there along with the standard material on virtually all of the descendants of Louis La DukeI through about 1990. I talked to Lois this morning and she says she still has a couple of copies of her book which she would sell (probably for a very reasonable price). She said you could communicate directly with her, so here is her address, phone and email.

Lois Schroeder

584 Willoughby St

Grand Junction CO 81504

970-314-2228

lschroeder@bresnan.net

Lois hit the proverbial brick wall on the Hart line with Gahazi's father, Rodman. I was able to pick up there and found that his first wife was Lorinda Granger, daughter of Jacob Granger and Esther Cushman. I have a lot of stuff on this line, but it is in a somewhat chaotic state. If you have software that can read a gedcom file, I may be able to send you that. Let me know if you want to try that. I am using Family Tree Maker Ver 16. If you enjoy Google searches, here are a few suggestions.

Gideon Granger was related to Jacob Granger (uncle, I think). He was the first Postmaster General of the US appointed by Thomas Jefferson in 1800 and served into the administration of James Madison. This is a great source for all the Grangers. Gahazi Hart was apparently named after one Gahazi Granger.

Capt. Robert Keayne came to Boston from London in 1635 and was reported to be the wealthiest man in Boston. He was severely criticized by Rev Cotton Mather and left a rebuttal in his lengthy will which has been published as

The Apologia of Robert Keayne the Self Portrait of a Puritan Merchant the Last Will & Testament of Me, Robert Keayne, All of It Written with My Own Hands and Began By Me, Mo: 6: I: 1653, Commonly Called August BAILYN BERNARD EDITOR 1965 soft cover Harper Torchbooks. 93 pgs 5.5'x8' Illus cover .

Edward Rossiter was a promoter and member of a group of colonists who founded Dorchester MA in 1630. His daughter, Joanna, married Nicholas Hart. These are all ancestors of Gahazi who lived in Rhode Island in and around Tiverton and Little Compton for many generations until Rodman moved to upper New York (joining his inlaws, the LeMunyons).

Thomas Dudley served as assitant to Gov. Winthrop and eventually became the second governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. His daughter, Sarah, married Benjamin Keayne, son of Capt Robert Keayne. The Dudley ancestors are likely related to the Suttons of northern England.

Isaac Allerton was a Mayflower passenger along with his daughter, Mary Allerton. Isaax's sister, Sarah Allerton was married to Degory Priest, also a Mayflower passenger. These Mayflower folks a documented to the extreme on many websites. A descendant of Isaac and Sarah maried Eleazer Cushman.

Hope you find some of this interesting. Tell me if this is duplicative of what you already have. Will send more as I sort it out. Keep in touch.

Jim Hart
Thanks for the reply (cousin)Jim. Can I get your personal email address?
I am a natural born LaDuke. I have Family Tree Maker software and can receive ged com files. I have an rtf file for you .... maybe it would be easier if I send it directly to you instead of thru Rootsweb site. You seem to be able to help me out a bunch.
Alice

My father is Frank Thomas Cushman as was his father. My grandfather died in 1955 and my father just last year. I don't know much about the heritage as everyone has passed. My father was a Marine, his mother, my grandmother died while in child birth and my father was put into foster care until my grandfather re-married and could then take care of him. He died at 79. He had one brother John, a sister who died at an early age while swimming and that's it for the family as far as I know.
I would value the opportunity to meet others if there are some ties to us being family.

I am looking for any info on Velvie Cushman Keenan. She was married to Chester Keenan in Aiken S.C. and died at childbirth. She had 3 children. Hasting,Beatrice and Lemead. She had a sister named Nettie who also married a Keenan. I don't know his name. Hasting Keenan is my father and he named me after his mother. Velvie Cushman. My name is Velvie Keenan Helton. My father did not talk about this part of his life. I believe it was a very hard life after his mother died. My father was born in 1907. I do not know how old Velvie Cushman was when she passed.

yes that is a side line of mine. we both join the same line at solomon cushman. i am out of town at the moment and moved recently. i can give you what i have once i get home. for a more immediate source that is generally accepted as gospel for the cushmans look at henry wyles cushma's book on the genealogy of the cushman lines. i cannot think of the title but a barnes and noebel search will give it to you. my line is not included beyond my great great grandparents, prentice and polly ann (palmer) chushman. but the solomon cushman line as it is in HWC's book is as i can find correct, at least back to robert cushamn and the plymoth plantation and the mayflower. if you would like a more indepth answer please email again and i will give you everything i have back to england. but it will take me a little time to find the appropriate boxes.
tom.
ps
off the top of my head, this is not cast in stone, i believe that hanna's maiden name was lumpkin. i can verify for you when i get home.

Hi that is my grandfather. My mother was born Nora Minnie Cushman daughter of Maxine Cushman who was the daughter of Henry. My mother was given up for adoption and was raised by an Irish family by the name of Scanlon. I have been trying to find her family just so I could know some of our history. My mother passed away 2 years ago and she did not know very much. If you know of anyone please contact me as I would be very excited to meet some of my relatives.
Debbie Caponi dcaponi@snet.net
