I am searching for the ancestors of Thomas Couchman (Cushman), who was born in Rolveden, Kent, England abt 1512. His son was Thomas Cushman, born at Hawkhurst, Kent, England in 1538. Any help would be appreciated.

You and a few thousand others!! Unfortunately parish registers didn't start in this country until 1538 and not all records were kept then. Before this the documents that do exist are usually in Latin and difficult to read, also they often only relate to the wealthiest members of society. I'm still working my way backwards through a Sussex branch and wondering if I'm going to end up at a sibling of Robert or Thomas. My grandfather was registered in Kent as Couchman and married in Sussex as Cushman, the pronunciation is the same ie. Cushman for both!

My ancestor Elihu WOOD married Lydia CUSHMAN in New Bedford MA. Record: Elihu WOOD Married 1 April 1784 to Lydia CUSHMAN, bap. 1762 at 1st Cong. Church in Fairhaven d. bef. Oct 1778 Lydia attended 1st Congregational Ch in 1807, left in 1812 to join 3rd Cong Ch. Marriage - Unitarian Church Record, or Congregational Ch Record.

Has your CUSHMAN research led to NY state? I believe that this Lydia is the daughter of Seth and Abiah ALLEN, but the current CUSHMAN websites can not confirm this, they only say Seth died in NY state with his children?

Perhaps Seth's will might help, or family records. Let me know if you can think of where in NY state to search. Seth was b. 1734, so must have died in the 1790-1830 timeframe.

Sorry, Larry, but my Cushman line stays in Massachusetts, as far as I know. Samuel Cushman, b. 16 Jul 1687 in Plympton, Plymouth, Massachusetts married Fear Corser 8 Dec 1709 and they had two daughters, Mercy (from whom I descend), Desire, and a son named Jacob. I have nothing on Jacob's descendants, as yet, but I suppose they could have wound up in New York at some point. Jacob was born in 1719 in Plymouth, Massachusetts.

i might be some help. the following info was obtained from the new england genealogical receord( not sure of the title). much of my data has been in files. i am trying to enter it all into the computer so i cannoti have a thomans couchman:

they had 6 children icluding robert cushman.

2. high court of admiralty records book 44.

once again, i believe the first portion of this to be true. the validity of the ancetsry of thomas couchman(robert cushman's father) is not as reliable.
