Surnames: CUSACK, MORGAN, CAHILL
My great great grandfather was Michael Cusack, (farmer) who married Bridget Morgan (c1825). Bridget’s parents were Roger Morgan, (farmer) and Ellen Cahill.
Bridget migrated to Australia in 1869 with two of her three children, Catherine (1855) and James (1856). They joined John (1851) who arrived in Victoria in 1867 and made a home at Warrenheip near Ballarat in Victoria, later settling at nearby Bungaree. All travelled as unassisted immigrants.
Michael, Bridget’s husband did not travel, so I presume he died in Ireland prior to civil registration. I have checked and eliminated the Michael Cusacks registered in County Clare Ireland between 1864 and 1870.
John, (my GGrandfather) and his sister Catherine married and had twelve children each. James remained a bachelor. I have purchased John and Catherine’s marriage and death certificates, as well as all their children’s birth certificates. On all it simply states County Clare with no townland or parish listed. I have also checked the original church registers here in Australia which also state just County Clare. Over many years I have checked the sites on the County Clare Library and on previous visits to Ireland have looked at many of the films of parish registers.
Having exhausted all avenues here in Australia and many in Ireland, I am seeking assistance from anyone who may have come across these combination of names in their family research.
I am quite desperate to find the townland my Michael Cusack came from and any assistance with knocking down this brickwall will be greatly appreciated.
With thanks,
Bob (& Georgina) Cusack, Australia

Hi

One suggestion is that if you look up the original shipping records at the Vic public records office(on microfiche) for both John and Bridget's arrivals, it may give a lead to who else travelled with them (and possibly have a connection to them - either related or from same townland in Ireland).

regards

Maurice

ps: I actually live in Bungaree, Vic

Hello Maurice,
Thank you for taking the time to reply to my thread. I have checked the shipping records in the past but as they were unassisted passengers only the basic details were obtained eg. Name, Age, Read and/or Write and Nationality. Names of other passengers rang no bells with me then, but it is time I re-visited those records as I have gained more information since my last check and perhaps a name will link up. Thank you for the suggestion.

Being a Hanrahan from Bungaree, you may be aware that a relative of yours, Mary Josephine Hanrahan, AKA May, 1889 to 1973, married my grandfather, John Patrick Cusack, AKA Jack, 1892 to 1964. He had been living at the Cusack home in Black Swamp Road, Bullarook but after their marriage moved to 257 Victoria Street, Ballarat. He was a potato inspector with Dept. of Agriculture. May lived at this address after he died until her death in 1973.

An aunt of mine, Moya Casey nee Cusack insisted up until her death a few years ago that a bible was always on the dining room table at her father and May's home in Ballarat. She maintained that the family births, deaths and marriages were recorded in it. She felt it remained in the Ballarat home after Jack died and that it must have gone with May's belongings following her death.

I did make contact with the Hanrahan (can't remember his christian name) relative who looked after the Michael Hanrahan Eureka Stockade website re the bible and he apparently did make inquiries with some in the family but no one knew of it. Do you by any chance know of the bible's existence? All I am seeking is the written information on the cover sheets.

Thank you again for making contact, and I shall follow up on the shipping records again.
Regards,
Bob Cusack

Bob

Thanks for note. I suspected you have been connected to Jack Cusack. I will also check with a few family members re the Bible, but I have never heard of its existence.

Also, given the research you have undertaken I assume you may have looked up the obituaries in Victoria. If not, one suggestion would be the Gordon Advertiser (incidentally edited by a relation on my mother's side). It specifically covered the Bungaree area and often the write-up was more extensive than the Ballarat Courier or Ballarat Star (and occasionally included cousins and where in Ireland they came from). I know it is on microfilm (also on TROVE for 1914-1920) - I occasionally go to Ballarat Library so let me know if you can't access it.

regards

Maurice

Thank you for the reply Maurice. I appreciate you taking the time to ask some of your family about the existence of the bible.

Would you please email me on cusackhistory48@gmail.com as I have more to ask you on the Gordon Advertiser issues.

Regards,

Bob
