John Cundall b.abt. 1883 Nun Monkton, Yorkshire

John Cundall b.abt. 1883 Nun Monkton, Yorkshire

Posted: 11 Jan 2007 2:37PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Cundall, Lackenby
John Cundall lived in Saltburn in 1869 and worked as a miner
In that year, aged 26, he married Margaret Lackenby age 27 also from Saltburn. They married in St. Mark's Church, Marske.
On the marriage certificate John's father is shown as William Cundall,a Tailor.
I have traced Margaret's line and am anxious to trace the William line back as my wife is descended from the same line.
Thank you,

Colin Whitfield

I have a lot of Cundalls from Nun Monkton in my tree but the only John I have was born in 1832.

There may be a crossover somewhere ...

Thank you very much for your response, a Cundall fan at long last?
I actually made an error with the dob and it should be c. 1843 as he married Margaret Lackenby in 1869 and his stated age was 26. His father was stated as William a Tailor on the cert and the father of Margaret was Robert a Shoemaker.

I have been stuck here for years and if you have anything that may help I'd be well pleased!
My dear wife is a Cundall and her 95 yr old mother Doris Cundall (nee Richardson) is staying with us over Christmas!
You know for years I've been looking for John born 1840, what a prat I am! Just read the cert properly!

Looking forward to hearing from you. We live in London UK and Doris is from Middlesbrough not far from NM and there were a lot in the North East, leading to my wife's father.
We have attended a few Cundall reunions in the US

Thanks,

Colin

I Have a bit more information
John b Nun Monkton abt 1840, mother was probably Caroline b. 1822. In the 1841 Census she was in the house of Correction, York, no sign of son John. She also was thought to have had Mary b. 1843 Nun Monkton & William b1848 Nun Monkton.
Hew Husband/Boyfriend was William shown as CUNDALL on John's wedding cert.

Any connections?

Thanks,
Colin

Hello Angela,
Thanks very much for all that. For years I have been hunting and in a short time have had abt. 3 replies indicating what I had suspected.
As it's my birthday today when you replied I think I'll accept what you say!!
You mentioned Hannah Cundall, is she one of John T Cundall's (married Margaret Lackenby)children. I had the full tree but a crash lost most of it and I'm away from home at the moment so no bits of paper to check. I see on a previous posting you mention Minnie and there was a Minnie in John's side I believe.

Thanks again, looking forward to the answer!

Colin

I have recently had a lot of interest in this problem and have virtually accepted that John Cundall b 1841 (according to a lot of census info) is actually John Taylor Cundall.
The 1883 was an error.
John (Taylor) Cundall never used the name Taylor nor is it repeated in his family!
It is suggested he is John Taylor Cundall the illigetimate son of Carloine Cundall. John has a sister Mary Taylor Cundall b 1843 and bro. William Taylor Cundall b.1847.
Caroline lived in the 1851C at the house of a Taylor family and I have found a mariage of a Carolina Cundall in Selby, Yorkshire possibly to a George Taylor. Although none of this latter helps much so far as nothing found on censuses yet!
Mary Taylor Cundall m.Jun Q 1852 George Elliott Taran, cert awaited and William Taylor Cundall m.Jun Q1868 Elizabeth Bedford??? producing Effie who married Alonzo Shaw.
If there is anyone who has anything on George Elliott Tarron and the Cundalls I'd be happy to hear of it.

Many thanks to all who guided me. BUT still looking.
