My husbands grandfather,Francis Cunard,came
from France originally. He jumped ship and hid
under a ladies petticoat so as not to return
to the ship. He settled on the Northern Pen.
of Nfld. I would like to know how to trace
him or his family. Thanks

I have about forty years work on this name,
and have a pretty good rundown of the CUNARD
families in N.B. and N.S. including the once
owned Steamship Lines family. And there are
a couple of other CUNARD families who are not
from Thones Kunders of Germantown. Please send
me particulars, names, dates, etc. You may use
my email if they'll print

SIR SAMUEL CUNARD WAS FROM PA. HE LEFT PA. WHEN HE WAS 16 YEARS OLD AND WENT TO WORK IN CANADA AND THEN ONTO ENGLAND WHERE HE WORKED ON SHIPS. EVENTALLY GOT INVESTORS INVOLED AND STARTED THE CUNARD LINES.
I WAS MARRIED 55 EARS AGO TO A CUNARD AND MY FATHER-IN-LAW TOLD ME ABOUT HIM. HE WAS A BROTHER OF MY FATHER=IN-LAWS GRANDFATHER

Samuel Cunard was born in 1787 in Halifax, NS. His father, Abraham, was of Philadelphia, a tory, and left for Canada when he was about 28. He had 8 sons and 2 daughters. Of the sons, only Joseph and Edward + Samuel were known of to have had any
sons. Joseph went to England, too, and Edw.
remained in Halifax. Please send more details
and I will help. Sir Samuel's male lineage
is now defunct with the death of Sir Guy Alick Cunard of Wintringham...Erik Conard

Hi Erik,
Your the first post I've seen on the Cunard's in shipping.
I'm Not really as interested in the Cunards as I am the the Ross or that might have been in business with them. My ggrandmother alway said that one of her grandfathers had been in business with the Cunard that built or owned the QE.
But beyond the names Sir Robert Ross or James Ross or James Sands I am at a stand still.
Most of the Rosses and Sands came to the US in the 1850's but a few remained in the UK.
As far as I know there is no family relation, but any long shot is good.

Trying to trace my mother's family. She comes from Post and Wentink. I remember her saying there was a Cunard connection. Any links?
Thank you in advance.................

Without a time frame or a place, it is hard to sort through my
35,000 based Conard, Cunard etc names. However, I do not
have a Wentink or Post in my indices with the Cunards.
Unless I have further info I cannot be of much help. Sorry.
