I have been looking for years for any info on the boatyards of John or George Cumberland. The yards were in Foggy Bottom, Georgetown, Washington, DC. I found the names in the city directories and also a large ad for one of the boatyards. Does anyone know of any pictures that I could get a copy of or any other info on theses yards? Thanks Mary

PS: My family is also related to Cumberlands of VA. They lived near Colvin Run in Fairfax County.

I don't know if this helps anyone, but my grandparents are from DC and have resided in Northern Virginia the last 70 years or so. My grandfather is Louis Cumberland; he had a brother Frank who died in the 1950s or early 1960s, before I was born. His widow just died a few years ago at age 102. My father is Frank James, and he has brothers Louis Jr., and William (Bill). I don't know if this info helps anyone, but judging from the notes there seems to be a missing link in the DC line. Hope it helps a bit!

I have a picture of my Great-Grandfather, John Riley Cumberland (born 1865) building a boat at the Georgetown Boatyard in 1931. But there isn't much to see -- just two guys working on a boat while one rather well-dressed man looks on.

John Riley Cumberland's father was Charles Theodore Cumberland born 1838, son of John Cumberland (born 1804)and Susan Johnson.

Was the boatyard located on Water Street between 25th and 26th, N.W.?

Have cemetery records from Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington showing two large sites purchased by Charles and M.C. Cumberland on April 15, 1871. Another site was purchased by Thomas Cumberland on December 12, 1855. Parts of this lot were transferred to Joseph F. Birch.

Apparently I am in the Mary Emma line. Would love to share and receive more information.

Am just getting into searching for internet info on geneology.

Thanks,

Margaret

Surnames: CUMBERLAND
I am a decendant of John Cumberland. He was my ggg-grandfather. I have the family history, but no pictures. The family had a ship building business in Foggy Bottom, and I was raised on 30th St, just below Oak Hill Cemetery. John's father built a home at 20th and "K" sts. for his family. I would be glad for forward to you any info I have. My E-mail is fisherma@arlhosp.org. I have been working on the Stanton tree for many years and am just getting to the Cumberland side (my father's mother's family). I have always enjoyed telling the story of my ancestors having a ship building co. where Watergate and Kennedy Center are today, but the location may not be exact. The deepest part of the Potomac is at Key Bridge, so it makes sense that they had it there. I have many reproductions of D.C. but not the boat yard. I hope I may be of further help. Margaret

I am a decendant of John Cumberland. His father immigrated from England in 1795 and met Ann Orsal en route. She was a widow with 2 children. They married & had 4 children. My grandmother gave all of us a copy of the info written by Emily Independence CUMBERLAND. I would be glad to share it with you. I grew up on 30th St. just below Oak Hill Cemetery, as did my father & his 7 siblings. As I can figure John CUMBERLAND was my ggg-grandfather. I hope I can help in filling you in on these ancestors. Margaret

Surnames: Cumberland, Talley Shirley
Margaret;
I would love to have a copy of anything that you have. The Cumberland family is very confusing. There are so many with the same names: John, George, etc. My mother-in-laws parents were Robert Russell Cumberland (from VA) and Mary Emma Cumberland (from DC). Robert came to DC and lived with his Uncle John, Aunt Virginia & Thomas Cumberland at 1106 1/2 Street, SW in 1920. He was a DC fireman. Uncle John was also Mary Emma's uncle. I guess that's how they met. They also said that they weren't related because he was a VA Cumberland & she was a DC Cumberland. They both had the same great-grandfather, but different great-grandmothers. John was married 3 times.
Robert's parents were Charles Hugh Cumberland & Ethel M. Talley. Ethel is my biggest challange. She is the mystery woman. I can't get a single clue about her. My mother-in-law says that her gr-ma Ethel's mother was called Gram-mammy Shirley, but doesn't know if Shirley was her first or last name. Have you any info on Ethel Talley?

Thanks Mary

What a coincidence that you would post your message the same day Margaret Stanton-Fisher (also a correspondent on the message board) faxed me a copy of "History of the Cumberland Family" by Emily Independence Cumberland Clingan.

The names you mention seem to fit in with the children of William Edwin Cumberland and Annie Coombs. Their names were: Susan, Roger, John, Sidney, Emily, Walter Paul, Austin, Jeannette, and Alonza. Their birthdates would be in the 1850's.

William Edwin was the son of John Cumberland, Sr. (born 1804) and his third wife: Susannah King Johnson. Susannah was a widow with 4 childern when she married John in 1848. John had 11 children from his first two marriages (including two sets of twins). Altogether that made for 18 children!
John, Sr. took up the boat building business and ran the boatyard for 50 years. John Jr. (son of 1st wife) carried on the business after his father's death in 1876.

I am a descendant of Charles Theodore Cumberland -- John Sr.'s son by his second wife. I have a picture of my Great-Grandfather, John Riley Cumberland working on a boat at the boatyard as late of 1931.

f these names fit into your family history, email me directly at MSRAgresti@aol.com.

Michele,

I saw your message some time ago, and I meant to respond. I am not sure our CUMBERLAND line is what you are looking for, but I can fax you what I have. Trying to get more dates to add to what I have already. My line goes back to William Edwin Cumberland, who came from England in 1795 and settled in D.C. My E-mail is at my work. If you need copy of CUMBERLAND history, please let me know.
Margaret

Margaret, I've just recently started this mess of trying to find the Cumberlands and I was reading through the boards and believe we are related many generations past. In my line William Edwin married Ann Orsal who had Charles who had Charles Joseph who had Joseph Sr. who had Joseph Jr. who had Dwight who had me. I have other names if you think there might be a link.
Hope to hear from you soon, Denise
