Surnames: Cumberland, Hamilton
Am new to this site -- and just read the May 2000posting from Bob Parong. A message to his email address came back undeliverable.

I believe his William and John Cumberland match my ancestry.

William Cumberland (born Abt. 1770) in Washington City and shown in the 1800 Washington, D.C. Census.

His son: John I. Cumberland, Sr. (born about 1803, died 3/16/1876 in Washington, D.C.). He married Susan?
He was a ship's carpenter and at one time lived on Water Street between 25th and 26th Streets, N.W. in Washington, D.C. Their children were:
Charles Theodore Cumberland (6/15/1838 to 11/30/1880)*
John I. Cumberland, Jr. (Abt. 1830 to 10/8/1912) - married Susan Johnson in 1848 and
Thomas Cumberland (1828 - 1884)
*Charles Theodore Cumberland married Ann Rebecca Hamilton in 1860. He, too, was a boat builder. Their children included: Blanche Gertrude, Charles Ryland, Mary Roberta, Sara Ann, John Riley (born 1865 - my Great Grandfather), Edwin, Harriet, Eva, and Ella.

Would appreciate any information along this Cumberland line.

Bob,

Just to let you know, I have a history of the Cumberland family written by Emily Independence Cumberland that my grandmother gave to all of us back in the med 1950's. Am I glad she did. I wish they had done it on my grandfather's side. I am at home using my son's lsp-top and every time I go to print I end up going off line. The history is a wealth of information. She stopped the continuation aroung 1958, but it tells where William Edwin CUMBERLAND came from England in 1795 and lists all the family for the next 5-6 generations. I do not have your write-up handy, but there were 4 children. Many dates missing, but the verbage is so interesting. I can fax it to you if you like. I am a 7th generation D.C. native, starting with William Cumberland. I grew up on 30th St just down from Oak Hill Cemetery. I have been keeping up with the Stanton's for years. Going back to Ireland in March for them. I can be reached here at E-mail m1y4me@aol.com(my son's). At work my E-mail is fisherma@arlhosp.org. Hope to hear from you soon.
Margaret

Classification: Query
The Cumberlands of Washington DC are part of my ancestry. William Edwin Cumberland came to America in 1795 and settled in Washington DC. His son John was the one I decended from on my fathers maternal side of the family.
