Re: Cumberbatch - West Indies
Way back in the fifties, I briefly dated a young man named Clement Cumberbatch whose mother lived in Mount Vernon, NY. I lived in her home when I moved there to teach in '50 or '51. She had remarried a man from the West Indies, but I don't remember his name. She had a regal bearing and could pass for white. She worked at Saks or one of those upscale stores. They took me to a society dance at a well-known ballroom in Manhattan. I am 76 and don't remember details too well. They were lovely people. She took me in when I developed pneumonia. I might have died without her care.

Re: Cumberbatch - West Indies
My name is Ingred Cumberbatch. My father, Roy Frederick Cumberbatch born in Barbados in 1931 in St George's Parish. I am researching my family tree. He emigrated to England in the 1950's where he met my mother Winifred Miller, also from Barbados, and then to Toronto Canada in 1967.

Re: Cumberbatch - West Indies
I'm not "the family griot" but as I understand it these are my cousins - Dr. Roland Cumberbbatch was my grandfather's (Howard Cumberbatch's born circa 1874 or so) brother. There were several Cumberbatch brothers in this family who immigrated from Barbadoes to other venues of work opportunity throughout the Carribean - Panama & of course New York City where my grandfather eventually settled with his family. I remember my father telling me of the story when his uncle Roland came to New York City & took him & his siblings to the 1939 World's Fair in a "motor car."
This branch of the Cumberbatchs does host a family reunion every few years & had one in the Bahamas back in the late 1980's, which my father attended along with many other relatives.
