My gg grandmother was Pertina Cumbee, married to Henry Pool of Tennessee. According to our family stories, she and her brother Calvin Cumbee were raised by Indians who had kidnapped them as children, and who may have killed their parents as well. This would have been in the early 1800's.
According to the story, Pertina Cumbee didn't remember anything else about her family. There was speculation in the family that Cumbee might even have been the name of the Indian tribe. I see now, however, that the Cumbee name probably comes from Europe.
Does anyone know if there any stories in the Cumbee family about lost and kidnapped children? Does the Cumbee name have any connection to an Indian tribe?
Many thanks for any information.

I am just becoming familiar with my Indian heritage of the combahee Indians of South Carolina, but I know that there are several surnames for Combahee. my great grandmother was Adeline Cumbehee and in our family plot there are Cumbee's from what I can recall. I know as a child my grandmother didnt discuss our heritage out of shame and embarrassment of her family being dark and having a history of being bought as slaves. Apparently, they were harrassed growing up for their color and history. The tribe was declared extinct according to textbook back around 1751, which makes it difficult to find out any info. My mother has talked to a chief from Bonifay, FL who is very familiar on what happened to the creek Indians tribes of South Carolina around the lower Combahee river area and wants us to register the tribe. As I learn more I will let you know if I hear of any stories of kidnapped children. Just wanted you to know the connection to an Indian tribe, which as far as i know, originated from Hell Hole (Monks Corner) South Carolina. I know that I may still have some cousins with the last name that live in Coulton County, SC.

Hello, This is interesting information as my 3rd ggmother was a Martha/Marchey Cumbee from around Charlotte/Halifax area of Virginia. The last name has been spelled so many different ways I don't know the actual spelling. However, her 2nd great granddaughter told me she was said to be half Indian. She had dark skin, hair and eyes . I have never found who her parents were or any proof of the family story but this is intriguing and with time perhaps something more can be learned if there is a connection between the Cumbee/Cumby/Cumbie name and an Indian tribe. My family is from Virginia and I think it is possible there is a connection. If anything more comes to my attention, I will post it. Andria
