John Culver (1640-1725) marriage to Clark or Winthrop?

Classification: Query
Surnames: Culver, Clark, Winthrop
I have been searching for info on the marriage of John Culver (1640-1725), son of the immigrant, Edward Culver. I have found conflicting data on his marriage. One line states that he was married in 1665 to Mercy Clark (probably the daughter of either John or James Clark); a second line states that he was married in 1672 to Mary Winthrop, daughter of John Winthrop Jr. the Governor of Connecticut and thus the granddaughter of the famous John Winthrop, 1st Governor of Massachusetts and leader of the Winthrop Fleet. These two marriages are not incapable except for the fact that Mercy Clark is listed as still alive at the time of what would have been a second marriage i.e.: that to Mary Winthrop.
I have read through all relevant postings on this Message Board, but I have noted that all of these were made several years ago. Are there recent developments on this sticky question that I have missed!
Can anyone help with this? I am really stuck on this one!
Thank you!
Sharon
