James Culliton-Melancthon, Ontario-Thursday, June 27, 1907

From the Shelburne Newspaper Thursday, June 27, 1907

+ A sad fatality occurred on the farm of George McAuley, lot 16, concession 4, O.S., Melancthon, Monday afternoon. The timbers were being raised into place for an addition to Mr. McAuley's barn. Several men were lifting a girt into place when by some means it slipped from their grasp and fell to the ground below, a distance of about 14 feet. James Culliton, who was standing underneath, was struck across the breast by the timber and borne to the ground. He managed to get up and make his way into the barn, where he rested on the straw for awhile. Dr. McCue, who was present, did what he could for him. Afterwards, the injured man made his way to the house, and from there it was decided to remove him to his own home, which was done, but he died a few minutes after arriving there. Deceased, who was about 40 years of age and unmarried, lived with his mother, sister and brother. The funeral took place to Melancthon R.C. cemetery Wednesday forenoon.

Thanks for your reply Lydia.

I have had a bit of a break from researching my Culleton family history. Do you have any tips for researching immigration of people from Ireland to England/Wales? I know that William, Mary and Patrick ended up in Wales where William and Mary had further children. There seems to be some link to them arriving in Liverpool initially but I am not sure how accurate this information is.

Any information or help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Vicky
Jason, sorry. The girls names don't appear in my data base at all and the Williams I have are almost all from Wexford. Nothing matches your family.
I will enter the info you've given me into the Ireland Master file that I am currently posting on Ancestry. I will then be able to connect you if anyone else sees the info and is looking for the same family.
Kate

Sorry:
I have a million Johns and none of them specify middle name Thomas; most of the ones born about 1866 are Wexford. No Elizabeth Henry's in the Ireland file.
What was your grandfather's name ( and siblings names)and did he emigrate; if so where to? The files are arranged by locale so sometimes if I can't find someone in the Ireland master file I can find the family by the place they emigrated to.
Good luck.

Dale: That is a great find! So his parents are Michael and Margaret. I will look in my Canada and Ireland files and see if those names come up. Sometimes in those Quebec records you can find the parents' wedding notice or the kids (Wm and Bridget) baptismal notice and it will say where the parents were born. Is there any more on the next page that would give you Bridget's parents. If not, you might want to get the original microfilm and see if you can figure out the bottom of this page.
I can connect you with a cousin who is searching if you send me your e-mail at kcolwellmd AT earthlink DOT net.
Fun to have those old photos isn't it!

I also believe I found William Culleton, Bridget his wife and family in the 1861 Census on Allumette Island, Pontiac County, Quebec Province, Canada. Attached is the 1861 Census

1. Does the name Raymond Bernard Culliton d. 06 Apr 1934 St Louis Co. MN mean anything? I have him as a son of unknown William who would be about the right age.

2. There are SO many families with the same names. Do you know for sure that this family came through Canada? I have a John Culliton b. in Canada in 1856 who died St. Wendel, Stearns, Minnesota and married Loretta. Does that sound right? He is a son of PATRICK and Bridget, not William.
1930 census he's in St Cloud , Benton, Minn age 76 born canada
1920 cenus Culloton in St Cloud, Benton, Minn John 62 born canada arr 1868 Nat 1898

3. I have a William Cullitan b. abt 1817 in Griffiston, Paulstown Parish, Co. Kildare. Do you have a clue where in Ireland your Wm came from?

I am trying to trace my Culleton family history. I have only got to my great grandfather Patrick Culleton who was born on 30 April 1893 in Ireland. I know that his father was William Culleton and they were probably from the Wexford area of Ireland. Patrick came to Wales with his parents. Does anyone have any further information that may assist me? I am stuck as to how to search further back when my ancestors came from Ireland. I would also be interested in how and why they came to Wales.

Hi:
I have very little on families who moved to the UK. Sometimes I have info about the family in Ireland if I have data on what state in the US/Canada the family members migrated to as that's how the files are arranged.
I do have a William Culliton m. Mary Roacha in Killkenny but they are a generation before your family ( b. 1820s) and I don't have any other useful info on that family.
Kate

Lydia
Thanks.
My Francis is called "Frank" in 1870 census where he is listed as a laborer. That family spelled it Culliton on baptismal records and military records in Ohio. Two sons from that family ended up as horse breeders/traders so blacksmith isn't too far off. Francis Culliton died in 1873. When did Patrick emigrate?
Do you have Walsh or Welsh in your family? Francis used William F. Welch as an alias in the Civil War according to his widow's petition for benefits.
In 1853 either a lot of my family had emigrated or else they are incorrectly logged as Cullen's in the following census.

Ballycullane in Tintern PArish:near border of Waterford and Kilkenny

Most common surnames in Tintern in 1853

Surname No. of households
Murphy 24
Walsh 20
Power 16
Boyse 15
Cullen 10
Reville 9
Caulfield 8
Furlong 8
Kehoe 8
Clarke 6

Parnell left me 40 floppy disks and I am really trying to add to Culleton data. Unfortunately, Ohio, where his and my families lived, required 6 floppies for one file and I have never been able to read the Ohio or "Canada Misc." files. I think Mary Beth in Canada also has files but I don't think she got Ohio.

Anyone who has a GED of Culleton/Cullitons in Ohio, if you send it to me, I'd love to reconstruct the 6 families Parnell referred to who all settled in Northern Ohio.
I have a very large "Ireland master file", but many are just a name and a date without any connection to spouse/parent/child and no documentation of source, so not very useful. When I get a query on this board I add as much info as I can so I can figure out when people are searching for the same family and connect them.
Kate

Hi Jess,

Now some info I came across while trying to track down Adam Culleton's parents might be of use to you . From the 1901 Census I see your William Culleton lived in Sheastown Kilcavan. Now I have a birth cert for a John Culleton born 14/09/1864 who might be the sibling of William. He is listed as being born in Sheastown and his Father is listed as John Culleton and his Mother as Catherine Goff.
If you know the birth date of your John (Jack) Culleton perhaps this would confirm if it's the same one and perhaps bring you back another generation.

Hope this is of use.

Regards,
Lydia Furlong

Hi Kate,

Thats very intersting. My G Grandfather Adam Culleton lived in Ballylannan and then Ballinglee about 1 to five miles respectively from Ballycullane. Now Adam's son and Daughter Patrick and Margaret Culleton emigrated to Ohio at the turn of the century. Parnell Culleton passed on all the info on Patrick to me a number of years ago which no doubt you have on all the disks he left you. Now all we know in the family is that Patrick ended up in Ohio because he was going over to an Uncle Frank Culleton who I could never trace. He was a blacksmith I believe. Could be a long shot but any chance there could be a connection to your Francis althought he would have been 70 at that stage.

I will do my best on tracing James but as you probably know the Civil records here in Ireland stop at 1864 and church records can be like a needle in a haystack and you need so much time to go through them. I will certainly keep an eye out for you. Either way our Culletons all came from the same small community where members of my family still live.

Best Regards,

Lydia

Hi Kate,

I just have to search where I filed Parnell's information and I'll forward it onto you, can you give me your e-mail address? No Walsh that I know of yet but it's very hard to get passed a certain date here when searching.
If you got that Tintern info from griffiths valuation do spread your search to Ballylannan, Ballymitty and Kilcavan all areas within a five ten mile radius and you will see lots of Culletons begin to show up.
I know my Culleton family in Ohio changed the spelling to Culliton when they moved over also.
Have you ever gotten over to Ireland to search? If not I am often in the Ballycullane area if you would like any photo's of the church etc.
Patrick emigrated about 1900 so too late for your Frank Culliton usless he traveled over to one of his sons. My e-mail is lylo@oceanfree.net
Anyway I will have a search for Parnell's files.

Best Regards,

Lydia

Hi again, that's right, I have the census info about William Culleton myself from the Leitrim-Roscommon Census website! I don't have an exact date of birth for John Culleton, but to be honest with you, you info has helped me a lot, because they were the only Culletons in Sheastown for years! It is most likely the same John Culleton whose birth cert you have!! I spoke to my mother last night, and she told me of a man associated with Wellington Bridge, named Culleton (this would have been in the 40's) but she could not remember his first name! She did say his wife was a teacher at the school at Ballymitty, I think her maiden name was Kearns. My mom was not sure as to where they actually lived. Don't know if any of that sounds familar!!!
Thankyou so much for your info though!! Regards Jessica

Hiya, thanks for your post. I don't think I know of any Adam Culletons in my tree so far, but then I have no idea of William Culleton's parents, they could have been cousins?? I will ask my mother, as it is her side of the family, if she knew of another Culleton family or of any relations around the area. She is from Kilcaven herself.
For your info his siblings were John (Jack) Culleton, Tom Culleton, James Culleton and Ellen Holmes. They are all buried in Ballymitty. Any info would be great! Jess McEvoy

Hi, I am researching the name Culleton in Co Wexford, Ireland, and in particular my great great grandfather William Culleton, born 1866, died 6th Oct 1952. His wife was Alice. I would be interested to know what her maiden name was and who William's parents were. If you could help I would be grateful. Jess McEvoy

I have a couple of Patrick Culletons in the tree I have been putting together. The first was born in Co. Wexford in 1760,married to Johanna Murphy, and his grandson (also Patrick) was born in Valcartier, Quebec in 1833. I wonder if there is a connection there somehow? It seems like names seem to repeat in families so it is very possible.

I'm curious about ancestors from England. Is there a particular branch I should be looking at? My great-grandfather's name was Dennis Culleton, wife Alice. Grandparents were Marcus and Inga. All lived in Montana.
Thanks for any info.

Thanks for the quick reply! My father's family was large--6 kids--and their names are: David, Glenn, James, Ruth, Katherine, and Janice....all were born and raised in Valier, Montana. I will have to review what we do have a little more fully and will post the info for you as soon as I am back at home in MT and able to access it. Thanks again. I'm excited to find out more.
