William and Sarah Culbreath later moved to Rusk Co Texas where they died. William is believed to have been born in Mecklenburg Co Virginia or is closely related to the Culbreaths, McNeills and Clark families. of that county. Will exchange information.

I descend from some of the Culbreaths in Columbia Co., GA. My ancestor was Thomas Culbreath b. 1790s m. 1821 Columbia Co., GA, Eunice Pullen. They moved in the 1830s to Russell Co., AL.

I'm not sure from your query if you were interested in information on the descendants or the ancestors of William L. Culbreath. He seems to be the son of James Culbreath and Susannah Lowe. I base this on two things. One is the estate of Beverly Low/Lowe in Columbia Co. in which he wills some items to the legal heirs of his daughter Susannah Lowe and son-in-law James Culbreath. These "legal heirs" are not named in the will. However, in later accounts filed by the exector, William L. Culbreath is one of the people who is listed as an "heir."

Another researcher listed William L. as a son of James. She had researched James a good bit, but didn't send me her sources. I think her source was either an estate settlement of James Culbreath (he died in Harris Co., GA, in the 1840s) or James's Rev. War pension application. I have heard he names some of his children in the Rev. War application, but I haven't seen it myself.

Census records of William L. Culbreath lead me to believe that he and his wife had no children.

Jan....most of the Culbreaths of Columbia Co Ga came from Mecklenburg Co Virginia in the early l800s. I am descended from William Culbreath who will was probated in Mecklenburg in l787. I don't believe any of my family came to Columbia Co but in case you research in Mecklenburg Co I might be able to help. In case you don't hear from Andy, I have some of his writings that might be of assistance.

There are two documents found in Harris Co. GA of interest for descendents of James Culbreath: 1st is the actual pension application given in 1842 where James provides an outline of his life and service in the Revolution. He states his birth as March 16 1759 or 1760, and was from Mecklenburg Co., VA. His family moved to Columbia Co., GA in 1771. He is listed in the August 1781 Roster of soldiers as a private in Col William Candler's Regiment of Refugees, along with Obadiah Lowe (son of Beverly Lowe) and Henry Candler, among others. He married the sister of Obadiah Lowe.

The second document is dated 1853, and is provided by the heirs of James Culbreath. Apparently James Culbreath did not recieve any of the money allocated to him and his heirs petitioned for the money due. Listed of his heirs are:

Thomas Culbreath
William L. Culbreath
Beverly L. Culbreath
James M. Culbreath
Susannah Reynolds (Susannah Culbreath m. Martin Reynolds 1/24/1822)
Anna Morris

In addition I have found newspaper articles in various period newspapers listing Obediah M. Culbreath died about 1/1/1838 in Harris Co., and Lewis Culbreath, died between 9/1835 to 4/1837 in Harris Co. Both provide named executors which lead to William L. Culbreath.

James Culbreath was married to Susannah Low/Lowe born in Albemarle Co., VA to Beverly Low/Lowe and his wife Obedience (LNU). Based upon Columbia Co. deeds they were married before Jan 1 1793. Children of Beverly and Obedience are
Susannah (married Culbreath)
Elizabeth (married Angus Martin)
Obadiah (married first to an Indian woman, then to Judith Low in 1804--There may be a previous marriage before the Indian woman)

I am descended from Obadiah Low and either the previous marriage or more likely the indian woman through his son William. William is traced to Obadiah through the 1805 land lottery and Colonel Benjamin Hawkins Letters in 1795-1797 regarding the indian traders in the Creek Nation.

William Lowe married Charlotte Marshall in 1805, daughter of Zaccheus Marshall. Beverly and Obadiah Lowe, Zaccheus Marshall, and James Culbreath lived adjacent to each other in Columbia Co. When Beverly Lowe, then his wife Obedience, then later Obadiah Lowe died first in Columbia Co., then later Baldwin Co., James Culbreath is named each time as executor and administrator of the estates.

I kept running into Culbreath names during my research and wanted to see where it led.

More:

James Culbreath is named executor to his father Peter Culbreath's estate
Peter Culbreath names his wife Jane, and children James, Sarah (m Joseph Smith), Mary Vanderlinder(married John Vanderlinder), Nancy, William, John (believed to have m. Mary Johns, but there are so may John Culbreaths running around there may be more than one), Delph, Flora or Phlora (m. Lewis Powell), Catherine Carr (which Carr I do not know), Barbara (m 1]Charles Thigpen in 1809, 2]Lucas FNU), and Margaret (m Charles Caldwell). Note the Lucas marriage of Barbara: Zaccheus Marshall was married to Susannah Lucas, so there may be additional family interconnections.

Peter Culbreath apparently arrived in GA with brothers or relatives William and John, likely brothers. All are listed in wills of GA between 1780 and 1800. In addion, one Edward Culbreath of Mecklenburg Co, VA named Mary Culbreath and Mary Ramsey of GA his hiers in 1793 (The Ramsey family also lived adjacent to the Marshall, Lowe, and Culbreath families). Both named their husbands as Power of Attorneys to obtain their rights.

Since James Culbreath lists his birth in 1759/1760, I estimate his father Peter was born probably before 1740. I have observed most Culbreath researchers have provided Peter Culbreath with a birth year of 1727, which is very possible.

I also encountered information showing one John Culbreth of NC died about 1759 and had land dealings in Lunenburg Co., which includes Mecklenburg. Between 1758 and 1767, Lunenburg Co has mention of Edward (died 1770, so the Edward died 1793 was likely a son), William, Peter, John, William Jr., and Mary. This is consistent with several of the Culbreath family moving to GA in 1771. It is likely the Edward who died in 1770 leaving his property to his son Edward instigated the move of the rest of the family to GA to obtain land.

I am trying to tie in a loose end here on the particular relationship of the Ramsey family to the Lowe family, and the Mary Ramsey listed above is one trail I am following. That is,

--How is this Mary Ramsey related to Isaac Ramsey Jr., died about 1855--

If anyone has this information, please let me know.

I was led astray by the Culbreaths of Edgefield SC. In this family also are the names of Joseph, Edward, William, Daniel, and John frequent. But Edward Culbreath of Edgefield was b. about 1710, travelled from Scotland to SC in 1757, and died there in 1758. All the Culbreaths of SC appear to have remained there, and their descendents are there still. A particularly interesting article in a SC 1910 newspaper article interview of Joseph Culbreath, born in 1820, and served in the Mexican War, rising from Corporal to 2nd LT. In it he lists his father John and gfather Joseph. He also mentions a great Uncle Edward who lost all his toes on one foot due to frostbite in the Revolutionary war and died about 1830. So this is not the same Edward as died in Mecklenburg Co.

It may be that the Edgefield Culbreaths and Mecklenburg Culbreaths are related, but that is for someone else to find.

I don't have an answer for you about the exact relationship of Mary Culbreath Ramsey to this particular Isaac Ramsey, but here are a few clues.

Columbia Co., GA, Will Book A:152Will of John Ramsey, signed 28 Oct 1808

wife Mary to have 203 1/2 acre residence + 5 slaves

son Isaac to have 300 acres (100 acres of James Graves grant & 200 acres part of Randal Ramsey grant) + 7 slaves

dau. Martha to have 300 acres acres Isaac Ramsey grant & 200 acres John Ramsey grant + 7 slaves

son Samuel to have 350 acres, part of 600 acre Randel Ramsey grant + 8 slaves

execs. to be wife Mary, John Culbreath, & Isaac Ramsey
proved 6 Feb 1809

I estimate that Mary Culbreath Ramsey was born 1760s, her children probably born 1780s-1790s.

The Columbia Co. tax rolls, in conjunction with the deed records, have been helpful to me to sort out people with the same names.

I am also researching the Culbreath's of Columbia County, GA and Mecklenburg/Lunenburg Counties, VA. I recently visited the Columbia County courthouse, as well as the TN Archives, where I've found a great deal of info on Peter Culbreath, my ancestor through his daughter Barbara Culbreath Lucas. The VA deeds and other info shows links to other Culbreath's, especially Edward, Sr. However, there is no indication of whether they are brothers or father/son. Many of the Culbreath's came to Columbia County around the 1771 timeframe. There is a record from Mecklenburg that plainly states that Peter in 1774 was already in GA, thus proving that he is the same individual who died in Columbia County and left a will. I do have a copy of the original will for anyone who is interested, as well as Peter's estate papers.
