i'm trying to trace the ancestors of Patrick Culbert born about 1841 in Kildare, Ireland and his wife Martha O"Neill born about 1843, also Kildare. They went to Manchester, England about 1860 and then in 1893 they emigrated to USA. they had one son born in Ireland, John and seven other children in UK.

I am not sure if there is a connection because the Culbert line is a rleatively new line that I am searching. My 3rd great grandma was Mary Anne Culbert born in Kildare, Ireland around 1843. She married Charles Arch(i)bold and lived in Dublin through (at least) 1901. I wonder if mary and John might be siblings.

Hi,
Sorry my Mary Ann Culbert was born in Manchester abt 1868. She went to the US and married a Stephen O'Hara. She actually died in Rochester county in 1939. Her mother was Martha nee O'Neill and she did have a brother John. He was either in the US or Canada. My great grandmother was the only one of that family that remained in UK.

Audrey, I note that this Mary Ann's birth registration is available from the GRO. From the index I see her birth was registered in the first quarter of 1868 in the Chorlton District, vol. 8c, p. 742. I also see a Mary Ann had her marriage registered in the first quarter of 1888 in the Cardiff District, vol. 11a, p. 440. I do not have the details of these registrations. Jim Culbert

Hi Jim, The birth registration looks right but the marriage not. She was definitely married to a Stephen O'Hara. She possibly married him in the US. I have a cert. re. her death in Rochester County, NY in 1939 and her husband is Stephen V O'Hara. She had already left England before her parents and they went to the US in 1893. Always possible it was a second marriage but really don't know. But thanks for the reply. Regards, Audrey

Audrey, The marriage registration was only a possibility, based upon her birth registration year. Details can be obtained from the GRO.
To check marriage status, I suggest using the 1910 U.S. Federal Census, which asked for the years in the present marriage. Comparing this to the immigration date would suggest where the marriage occurred.
