Rene Cuillerier/Leveille as on Fichier Origine
Rene Cuillerier was spelled this way on Fichier Origine.
It gives his Parents as Julien Cuillerier & Julienne Piau. HOWEVER, Rene at his Marriage to Marie Lucos 13, April 1665 at Notre Dame in Montreal gives his Parents as Julien Cuillierer & Julienne Faitfeu.
So either Fichier Origine has it wrong or Rene didn't know his own Mother's name. So I would put Piau-Faitfeu on Pedigree records.

Re: Rene Cuillerier/Leveille as on Fichier Origine
Hi Darlene
I'm having the same problem. I'm also running into a snag of a similar sort with Julien's parents and Julienne's. If anyone knows anything I would be interested as well.

Re: Rene Cuillerier/Leveille as on Fichier Origine
Rachel:
I have found absolutely nothing about Julien's Parents. Rene Cuillerier was a well known Merchant & one of the original founders of the Church at Lachine, Quebec.
He is also thought to be the only one to have written a book about the Iroquois with autjor unknown as he was carried off by them & lived many months among them.
If anyone had found his Grandparents Cuillerier in France, it would be known & it isn't. That would be Julian's parents.

Thanks Darlene. I know Julian's father was Michel and his mother Guillimine (sp?) Faitfeu. And possibly Michel's father was Andre.

I have recently traced my mother-in-law's ancestors in Canada back to the 1600s and find her 9th grandfather was Rene Cuillerier. We sent for the historical book about his capture by the Iroquois Indians which shows how severely Rene was tortured by the Iroquois. He was one of three who were captured and severely tortured, with the other two men finally being killed. Rene was fortunate as he was rescued by an Iroquois Indian woman who had lost her brother and wanted to adopt Rene as a substitute. He was in captivity for 17 months, which gave him the opportunity to learn the Iroquois language thus making him the translator for the French explorers and Priests. After 17 months of being captive, he escaped to New Holland (NY) and then went back to Quebec. My mother-in-law's name was Therese Fields born in Maidstone, outside of Windsor, Ontario 1890. Her parents were Daniel Fields and Elizabeth Martin. Daniel Fields' mother was Elizabeth Cabanac born 1853 and she was Rene's descendant. Please contact: Jeanne Lorf Linley jeannelinley2000@yahoo.com

Re: Rene Cuillerier/Leveille as on Fichier Origine
Thanks, Jeanne.
I was aware he had been captured, etc. But I forget where I got that info from. I didn't source it. I don't think I heard the point about him being "adopted." I also have the info about him escaping to NY. I also have the info that he took the ship "New Netherlands" out of Port Orange, New Holland (NY) via Boston back up to Quebec.
My Cuillerier's dit named themselves Petit at some point in the 1800's and later became just Petit's down here in the US. Needless to say my family was very surprised by that.

I got some information from a book "Nation Iroquoise" A 17th century Ethnography of the Iroquois edited by Jose Antonio Brandao and translated by Jose with K. Janet Ritch. This includes a diary which has to have been written by Rene. It is on Amazon and my son just sent for it. Most interesting! The cruelty of the Iroquois is pretty gruesome. And to think he is my husband's 10th great grandfather, related through his grandfather's mother Elizabeth Cabanac's line, is just incredible!
