I have been told through family that I am the bloodline of an Indian Princess from the Shinecock tribe. After trying to research - with (many different endings) I come to the name Cuffee or Cuffie (Not sure of spelling) I think there is a cousin named Gerard Cuffee still alive (don't know where). Does anyone know if this name is connected to Brush or Oliver or Conklin/Conkling? My family name is Raynor and these names were somehow connected. Please help! Thanx!

My paternal grandmother's name was Blossom A. Cuffee (maiden name) her father's name was James Cuffee her paternal Grandfather was Chief Cuffee of he Shinnecock tribe she was born in Blackstone Virginia. I heard many of the same stories I have now decided to follow up on the ancestral history. Does this information sound familiar to you.

My great cousin gave me the info. Her father, who was my fathers uncle, told stories of the Shinnecock heritage. His mother was Ophelia Oliver. She was of the Shinnecock blood. There was mention of a Chief. Whether it was Cuffee or Brush I am not sure. She is old and lives up in NY. I live in Florida. It is sometimes difficult to reach her. She is very informative, but tells stories so quickly it is often hard to write them down as fast! When I ask her to put it in writing - it is like pulling teeth. When I do get this info correctly, I will surely let you know. Thanks for the inquiry. Louise

I am of the Cuffee Bloodline. There was a chief in our family history, but I too am unsure of his name. However, I do know that there was a riff between two of the Cuffee brothers where one was marrying outside of the tribe and was told that he had to change his sur name from Cuffee and that he would no longer be a part of the family. Instead, this brother just changed the spelling of his last name to "Cuffie", which is why there are two different spellings of the sur name, but we all belong to the same family.
I would be very interested in receiving some of the stories you have written down. My grandmother was Clara Cuffee, born of Everett Cuffee and Elvira Hicks, also from the Shinnecock Reservation. A few years ago we met up with some more of our cousins at the annual pow-wow and met the son of the Cuffee chief. His name was Lightening Foot Cuffee.
Please write back.

I am really not sure of names but dates have to go back into the 1850's I think. The names that are attached to this are Brush, Conklin/Conkling, Oliver. My g.grandmother was Ophelia Oliver and she married Alanson Raynor (who died young). They had 3 young children (boys). She often told stories of her families loss of land in LI. Someone was also a princess. Many years ago, I did a paper for grammer school and had the name, but over the years, my mother couldn't remember what happened to it.
Names of towns were often spoken of. Such as Raynortown, Cold Spring Harbor, Riverhead, but mostly Raynortown. I have tried very hard to locate info on Alanson, but am at a brick wall. I believe the key lies in this marriage somewhere. Does anything sound familiar?
Would love to hear form you again. Again, sorry for dely in writing.
