Surnames: Cuffee Gardiner
Hello, I'm researching information on my great great grandfather, John Tyler Gardiner. I was told that his surname at birth is Cuffee. He served in the Civil War. His name could be something different. I know my great grandfather, Clifton Gardiner, is his son. There are different stories of who granpa John was, I'm just searching for the truth. Years ago a woman named Corrine Whitaker responded to one of my aunt's request in the "Amityville Record" regarding granpa John. However, by the time I found that response, it was years later. Ms. Whitaker said that she could help, but I don't know how to get in touch with her. Amityville Record has not responded to my requests. Any information anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

My name is Yvonne Cuffie. I am from Long Island NY. My father is Myles Cuffie aka Hambone born in 1948, his father Wilson freeman was born in 1922, his father Everett (spelled many different ways in census records) was born in 1890 or 1891, his father William Washington was born in 1860, his father Oliver was born in 1837. Here is where I pretty much have concrete proof that these are my ancestors. I also saw something that listed a father to Oliver as Jonathan Cuff born in 1792 from New Jersey but my issues is the birth date of this Oliver which is 1828 this Oliver does not have my ancestors listed as children but the same siblings, so you can see my confusion. They have been labeled as Mulatto, Indian and black or negro. They name Oliver's mother as Mary Rebecca Murray who was listed as Mulatto and or white. She was born 180 or 1801. The disregard they showed for record keeping of our people is extremely sad!!! I know this thread is old but Im hoping someone sees it!!!! My email yvonnemedbill@gmail.com
