Cuffee Family from Norfolk, VA
I need someone to contact me with regards to the Cuffee Family out of Virginia. I have records of the Cuffee's from the 1700's. I am from the Mayo family but am connected to the Cuffee family because John Cuffee from Norfolk left the county and moved to Halifax county, VA. His first name was dropped and adopted the surname of Mayo. Cuffee Mayo's children left Halifax county and worked in Cumberland, Fluvanna, Mecklenburg and Brunswick counties. I am a descendant of Cuffee Mayo who originally had the last name of Cuffee. We are native american/african american and european or tri-racial people. Pleas contact me I have a lot to learn about the Cuffee's from Virginia.

Re: Cuffee Family from Norfolk, VA
Hello, I'm now responding to your message about the Cuffee's from Norfolk VA. Maybe you can help me. I've found that there have been a lot of pit falls in regards to the Cuffee Family tree because there are PLENTY of us around here. The name's are spelled different sometimes because of illiteracy(someone else having to spell it for them) or the fact that there is really another name Cuffe. I see you mentioned John Cuffee. There is John Cuffees related to me on both sides of my family. And he is unfortunately where I get stuck in the family tree. Because There are a lot of John Cuffee's that lived in the Norfolk area in the 1800's and some of them are only a few years apart. Any information to distinguish the John Cuffee's could probably help us both. Cuffee's run strong in my family.

Re: Cuffee Family from Norfolk, VA
In response to your reply, I can agrre with you about the Cuffee family. The family is confusing but yet intriguing. I have traced my roots back to the Massachusetts/RhodeIsland area. This is the area where Paul Cuffe came from. Some Cuffee's think that the Cuffee's in the Norfolk area are related to the Cuffe's in Mass. I do agree with them. it seems that they have a connection but I don't think anyone has proof. My 6x great grandparents were born in 1734 and married in 1768 (Massachusetts). Cuffee (my geat grandfather) married a Nannie in 1768. He only went by the name Cuffee which I think he was related to or an offspring of the original Cuffe family in Mass. This family was African/Native American descent. The Wamapanoag tribe was where their mother came from. I believe my great grandmother, Nannie came from the Nemasket branch of the Wampanoag tribe. It is very possible that the Norfolk Cuffee's is an extension of the Cuffe family because they were in the shipmaking business and Paul Cuffe owned his ships. He traveled down the east coast often stopping off in Virginia. I have gotten in contact with a direct descendant of Paul and he told me that his great grandfather often smuggled people out of the Mass. area and made many trips to Virginia. Paul's brothers and brother in law often traveled with him. I think they may have started families in that coastal part of Virginia. It's very likely that they left offsprings there. My 6x great grandparents ended up in Halifax county Virginia and took the name Mayo as a surname. I hope some of this information will shed some light on your research. I also understand that there are Cuffee's down the coast all the way to the Barbados. Let me know if I can help you further

Re: Cuffee Family from Norfolk, VA
Wow, My name is Brenda Beckham. My maiden name is Brenda Alexander aka Cuffy. My grandfather, Mathias Cuffy (ee) is from the Virginia Beach area from Butts Road. He was born abt 1890 and had several brothers and sisters. His mother was Louise Cuffy and his father, Mathias Cuffy Sr.
It is my understanding that Louise was American Indian.
Mathias Cuffy changed his name to John Alexander around 192? and 1930. He met my grandmother, Margaret, and they had one child, Carrie, who was born in 1927.
He died December 31, 1971 in Trenton NJ.
I am curious and would like to know why he never had any further contact with his family, or if he had other children.
Perhaps we can connect the dots.
