I would love to know the "geographical-historical" path of the Cuellos, on your side... I am still inquiring about my ancestors. I was told that the name was probably Jewish in origin (Sephardic) ... I look in some texts and there was indication of both Coello and Cohello as Jewish... I ask my mother about it and she told me that my father used to say that his grand-father used to light candles on Friday evenings.... So the circle is closed... I also recently had an e-mail from Harry Stein (see the "www.Sephardic.com") website insighting me that the name Cuello may be sephardic. A JEWISH name. please check this website out as you will be amazed that yes Cuello is sephardic.

There are Coellos or Cuellos who are probably "old Christian"... but most likely in Spain or Portugal. They are descendents of "French" mercenaries hired by a Portuguese King to fight the Moorish... It is because they were respectable Christian that some Jewish people adopted
their name to protect themselves... came from Spain to the Viceroyalty of the Rio de la Plata ( today's Argentina) probably in the late 1500's... They were "gauchos". They are most probably "marranos"... that is falsely converted ( to Christianism) Jews. The Inquisition was very active
at that time, both in Spain and South America.

I never got to meet my grandmother, my mother says she passed when she was small and was raised by her stepmother. My mother had 2-brothers and 2-sisters, all of whom were in Texas. Now only leaving 1-sister and 1-brother.

I vaguely remember my grandfather, Pablo Cuello. He and his family were very devoted Catholics and also lite candles (only I will ask my mother if it was a Friday type ceramony). They were very close to the Catholic Church. My step-grandmother kept her head covered on Sunday's and never missed a mass. My grandfather had a light complextion and blue/grayish eyes, he was a very quite man. I remember him standing at the door to greet us, and we never entered his home until he blessed us. Once we were in his home (visiting); we didn't see him until we were ready to leave. This is why I am so interested in my mother's maiden name, because I know hardly anything. My mother still lives (71 yrs.) and was born and raised in a small town in Texas called Gonzales. She said her father was from Mexico, but has not gone into detail as to what part of Mexico.

I will be questioning my mother soon about whatever she can remember and try to order SSI papers from the US Gov't which will list my grandfathers birth, and parents names and country of origin and will send you more info as receive it.

I hope that the above helps...(Let me know about your "stories", if you wish)

You are most welcome to e-mail me at any time. I live in a small town outside of Houston, Texas
called Rosharon.

Dear Frances et all.'
Your story sounds very similar to ours!
Our great great grandmother was called Maria Quiroga, she was living in Cordoba (They were "gauchos". like you most probably "Marranos".) and she of a and moved to Buenos Aires. The story goes that she would lit the Shabbat candles on Friday night, together with the grandchildren, including my grandmother, who moved later to Holland. My mother had a strong feeling for Judaism, and converted together with us, her three children, but now we try to prove that were already Jewish, before the conversion.
The name of the mother of Maria Quiroga, was probably 'Maria Chiona', but this name was very unclear, as written in the books we found(most found. .
The daughter of Maria Quiroga became a very famous tango singer, named Rosita Quiroga, but noting to be found about her Jewish roots...
Maybe there is anyone that can help us in our search?
Every single link in the right direction can be very helpful.
Thanks in advance,
