Hi There,

I am looking for relatives of my father's family. He was born in Mayaquez, Puerto Rico, circa 1920 and he died circa 1978 in New York City. I know he had a sister by the name of Delfina and that they were close in age (I believe she was older than he) and that Delfina lived in the Bronx for a time and I presume that she is no longer living but I am unable to verify this presently. When I was young, I remember my father telling me the importance of the spelling of our name and that our ancestors hailed from royalty. I used to think of this as wishful thinking on my father's part but still cling to the memory of his saying this. If you think that we might be related please leave me posts or email me and I will respond to every one. I am half Puerto Rican but I do not speak any spanish (never taught nor learned much to my dismay!) but if you answer me in English I will respond to all queries.
Thanks!

Do you know your father's mother's maiden name? Many names in PR records are listed by Father's Surname, Mother's Surname. For example, if his mother's surname was Rodriguez he would be Francisco Cuebas Rodriguez. It will make it easier to pin point any connection we may have...Kathy

Hi Kathy,

I am finally coming back to the message boards and I saw your reply to my message. Unfortunately I do not know my father's mother's surname. Only that she was called Antonia Cuebas. She had 2 children, my father Francisco (Frank) and a daughter, my aunt Delfina. Precious little information. Last year while on a cruise I stopped briefly in San Juan, PR but there was very little time to do research. It was my first time in Puerto Rico, but it was not what I had expected. I definitely want to go there again and check out Mayaquez along with my daughter who is very much in touch with her latino roots. I think the experience will be enormously important to us both. Thank you so much for responding to my inquiry.

Hola!

If you did not receive my email, I wanted to let you know that your g-grandfather Francisco Cuebas LaForet is the son of Don Eugenio Cuebas de Arredondo y Dona Dolores LaForet Cubino. The PR anthem, La Borinquena, was written by Felix Astol y Lola Rodriguez de Tio at Eugenio's hacienda in Mayaguez. Eugenio was the brother of my husband's g-g-grandmother, Carmen Cuebas de Arredondo. They are the children of Eugenio Cuebas Suarez de Almedia y Maria Teresa De Arredondo. There are many famous connections to this family. I'd love to share info with you! K

Hola Oscar,

We need more information. have you located your family in the census records. Were all the kids born in Brooklyn? or just your father? I am a little confused.

Antion ? and Viviana Rosello Cuebas had: Oscar, Eugenio, Emilio, y Carmen y Gloria?

Their son Oscar, your father, had Robert, Vivian, Lola and you. Is this correct?

We'll figure out this puzzle. you can email me directly at mdkarod@comcast.net. Kathy

Hello,
I do not think we have any relations but you never know. My father also stresses the importance of the spelling "Cuebas" not sure why. It's much more difficult to track, as I found both Cuevas and Cuebas in my family on different census reported. You may want to search both and add corrections.

Regarding royalty. Most families that emigrated to Puerto Rico's Mayaguez and Anasco region in the 1800's and possible before, were in my opinion, experienced coffee farmers brought in from Spain. I believe Spanish royalty never sailed for the New World. They couldn't they were busy handling an economic crisis, the courts and military battles with other nations, France? Portugal? Morocco? I think that's why the peasants left for the New World, similar reasons that Puerto Ricans emigrated to the USA, for better opportunities for You and Me.

Forgot to mention that I too am looking for Cuebas family connections. ;) I was all wrapped up in Spanish history.

My Grandmother was Josefa Cuevas Y Martinez (though I'm having a hard time finding sources of this, she may have been the youngest.) Her parents were Hipolito Cuebas Y Colon married to Maria Martinez Y Martinez de Cuebas. All from Barrio Ovejas, Anasco, Puerto Rico.

Los Cuevas-Cuebas seems to be of a single group from San Sesbastian, Lares, Utuado, Adjuntas and then Mayaguez. I do have genealogical information. Im Cuevas for my mothers side. Actually she was Cuevas-Cuevas. They were cousins. Please do contact me, email grecolatinous@yahoo.com
