I would like to make contact with anyone with a Cuddihy connection to Nenagh, Tipperary, Ireland and surrounding areas. Also as these Cuddihys relate to mining as a profession. In addition, I am interested in any Cuddihys who might have immigrated from Nenagh, Tipperary to Houghton County in the State of Michigan as miners in the mid-1800's.

I am a direct decendent of a John Cuddihy (married to Margaret Shannon) and immigrated in 1864 from Ireland. My family was involved in mining in the Upper Pennisula (Houghton) of Michigan during the time frame that you've asked about. John Cuddihy is buried in Hancock, MI as well as his wife. Their daughter, Bridget is my namesake and stayed in the U.P. after her husband's mining death in 1906 but is buried in Detroit. She had 4 children, one of which is my great grandfather. I have a wealth of info about their desendents if you are interested. I am searching for more of the ties to Ireland as they run deep and we do not have all of the pieces to the puzzle. Thanks for your post! Bridget

Dear Bridget,

Your reply was a surprise and greatly appreciated. I have considerable detail regarding my Crane/Crehan family as they tie in with the Cuddihy family. The tie-in comes through Denis and Anne Cuddy/Cuddihy who were the parents of my great-grandmother, Mary Cuddihy born 1846 in Ireland. Denis and Anne were both born in Ireland in 1816.

I would be more than happy to share this information with you. Please contact me directly at my e-mail address which is tccrane@peoplepc.com.

God bless,

Tom Crane

Since the date of my original posting in 2003, I have gathered new information. I have come to find out that my great grand-father was granted his naturalization/citizenship in Kingston/Roundout, Uster County,New York. The spelling of his name was changed to Creaghen, but the census spelled the name as Grane. I know that it is him because his in-laws lived with him and they were recorded as Denis and Ann Cuddy. The intersting thing is that my great-grandfather filed his intent in Houghton, Michigan where there was nummerous Cuddihys. Likewise ther are numerous Cuddihys and Cuddihys in Ullster,Kingston/Roundout, New York. If anyone is interesed in tracing their Cuddihys from Michigan, then I would try New York. I was told that they went there to maintain the canal. The upper pennisula was too cold for the Irish and they left it to the Finns who were accustomed to the cold weather. Best wishes to all. The Upper Pennisula was copper cpuntry and my great-grandfather mined silver in Silvermines, Tippery,Ireland in the 1860's, Ireland.

Hi Tom,

I hope all is well. I just came across your post from a little over a year ago. My name is Tiffany Cuddihy and I've been trying to trace back to where my Cuddihy side originated. My most recent Cuddihy side is from Yonkers New York, but I did the Ancestry DNA and I was connected (high probability) to a Cuddihy family in Saugerties, Ulster County, New York. I'm trying to find out exactly where the connection is since I can't seem to find anything further back than my Great Grand father, John Cuddihy (Born approx 1871). Do you know anything about the Cuddihy's from Ulster County?

Any input would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Tiffany
