YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Leonard J. Cuccarese, 78, of the city’s west side, passed away Wednesday evening, May 6, 2015, at his home following a long and courageous battle with multiple sclerosis.

Leonard was born June 27, 1936, in Cleveland, Ohio, (Cuyahoga County) a son of the late James and Mary Kurjan Cuccarese, and was a 1954 graduate of Youngstown East High School.

Len served in the U.S. Air Force for four years with the 8th Strategic Command as a mechanic and an Airman 1st Class.

He was a 1959 graduate of the Akron Barber College, and subsequently worked with his dad at the Acme Barbershop on Albert St. in Youngstown, OH for 22 years, before declining health forced him to retire in 1980.

Len was a member of the Multiple Sclerosis Service Agency, where he served on the board of directors for 10 years. He was an office volunteer with the agency for 25 years and received many awards for his volunteer work, including the J.C. Penney Award from President Bill Clinton. Len also received the first Mildred Alsop Award for Volunteer of the Year at the agency.

Along with his wife, Dorothy, Len was a co-leader of the Youngstown M.S. Support Group for 10 years. He was also a member of the Shakey Bunch Breakfast Support Group, where he was affectionately known as “The Boss.”

Len was a member of St. Christine Church in Youngstown.

Mr. Cuccarese leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife of nearly 50 years, Dorothy Fabrizio Cuccarese, whom he married Sept. 18, 1965; a brother-in-law, Sal (Rosemarie) Fabrizio of Mayfield Village; a niece, Atty. Johanna (Atty. Jason) Parker of Mayfield Village, OH; great-nieces, Gia Parker and Carina Parker; an aunt, Agnes Savnic; many cousins; and special friends, especially Rose Ann Papagna, Jerry Serbel, and Anthony and Yvonne Campanizzi, who were always there in times of need.

Besides his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his grandparents, and many aunts and uncles.

Family and friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 9, at St. Christine Church, where a Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m.

Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown, OH. (Mahoning County)

Arrangements have been entrusted to Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Rd., Youngstown.
