My Cubbedge Family Ancestors
Much of my information comes from a family research of George Spier Cubbedge done by Frances Houston Irwin in 1945 as well as other references I found in Georgia when I lived down in Jacksonville, FL. ***(additional info added from

1. Georgius Coppinge (12th Great Grandfather) was born in 1520-1525 buried in ST-MARTINS-IN-THE FIELDS on 8/3/1587.
2. Richard Cuppage (11th GGF) was born circa 1550. Before 1576 he married Sibbela Finch. His will signed in 1605.
3. Edward Cubbidge (10th GGF), son of Richard Cuppage, married Margaret Hodgekins on 12/4/1615 at ST-MARTINS-IN-THE FIELDS (This area is now Trafalgar Square in London England the church is adjacent to that area).
4. George Cullidge (9th GGF) who came to Virginia at the age of 18 on the ship "Assurance" leaving England on July 24, 1635.
5. John Cabage (8th GGF) of North Carolina. John Cabage witnessed will of one Thomas Hunt on May 7, 1688 and a John Philpott on November 19, 1694.
6. George Cubbedge (7th GGF) received head rights in Georgia in 1747. He received a land grant in Georgia in 1756 on the Great Ogeechee River and was listed as a member of General Oglethorpe’s Regiment of Georgia Provincial Militia. He was a planter in Bryan Neck, Bryan County where he died in 1758. His will was probated on 1/29/1759. His Legatees named are "Dear beloved Elizabeth Cubbadge, my son John Cubbadge, executor, and my two grandsons George and John Cubbadge" This will is recorded in Will Book (A), page 53 of the Georgia State Archives.
7. John Cubbedge (6th GGF), according to records of Effingham County, Georgia "Owned the vessel "Mary" which was captured and Paroled." He married Jean Donovan from Bermuda, dying circa 1797. Was among the first group of settlers appointed by the Royal English Colonial Governor as a Highway Surveyor, and in 1757 he was one of the Commissioners responsible for building Forts throughout St. Phillip’s Parish. John's sons: (1) George, listed as “George Cubbage, Gentleman of Savannah, Indebted to the Government on 5/19/1782. He is also recorded on 4/15/1797 as being the executor of his father "John Cubbedge, entering judgment against him for some reason on the same date. I believe George to be the same George Cubbage, a first Lieutenant, Chatham County Militia the State of Georgia who was captured by the British Army during the surrender of Fort Morris in Sunbury Georgia in January of 1779.
(2) John Cubbedge Termed John the second, married Alsie McGovern, and settled in Bryan County, Georgia. He evidently died after 1821, as he was the executor of an estate in Liberty County on that date. I believe John to be the same John Cubbage, a private in the Sunbury Militia Company in the State of Georgia, who was captured by the British Army during the surrender of Fort Morris in Sunbury Georgia in January of 1779. Believed to be the owner of lot #8 in Sunbury Georgia original inhabitant of the colonial town.
8. George Cubbedge. (5th GGF) I believe George to be the same George Cubbage, a first Lieutenant, Chatham County Militia the State of Georgia who was captured by the British Army during the surrender of Fort Morris in Sunbury Georgia in January of 1779. George was married to Mary who died circa 1823. He was an Ogeechee District Commissioner of Roads 1776-1785. George, listed as “George Cubbage, Gentleman of Savannah, Indebted to the Government on 5/19/1782. He is also recorded on 4/15/1797 as being the executor of his father "John Cubbedge, entering judgment against him for some reason on the same date.
9. John Cubbedge Termed John the third (4th GGF), born Feb/Mar 1784 and died 24 Sep 1858, married Sarah (Stephens?) (Francess Fife?). Their Children: Mary A., Margaret C., George Spier., John A.W. (my 3rd Great Grandfather), Stephen J. M. The above children were mentioned in a suit in RE: a plantation in Lincoln County deeded to George M. Waters in trust for the wife and Children of John and Sarah Cubbedge, on 12/20/1827.
10. John (Alexander or Alan) Waters Cubbedge (3rd GGF) was born circa 1823 and he married Mary A. Jaine on 14 March 1845. Their children were Francis, George, Barbara, Montford (my second GGF), Stephen. John is listed in the 1859 Savannah Phone Directory as a Ship’s Carpenter. John applied for a pension under the indigent pension act of 1894 due to his service as a private in Company "A" of Symons’ Reserves (A confederate State Militia Unit stationed in Savannah Georgia). John was injured building the pontoon bridge that the Confederate Army used to escape into South Carolina from General Sherman's Union Army. John was left in Savannah assumed captured and later paroled.
11. Montford Cubbedge (2nd GGF) born in Georgia circa 1855. Married Mary Ann Conner. Children were: Feris, Ashton B., Lula, Osrey J., Otis S., Martha A., George, Lonnie D. (my great Grandfather).
12. Lonnie D. Cubbedge (Great Grandfather) was born in Georgia circa 1899. Married Luretha Winskey. They had two Children, one died shortly after birth, the other was my Grandfather, Carlon Van Cubbedge.
13. Carlon Van Cubbedge (Grandfather) was born in Georgia circa 1918. Served in the United States Marines in World War II and after the war as a police Officer in New York City. He died in June of 1959.
14. Carlon Eugene Cubbedge (Father) born in Brooklyn New York on Feb 12, 1938. Enlisted in the United States Navy in 1955. Served 23 in the Navy, serving on Submarines for 11 years, received a commission as a Naval Officer and served in Vietnam. Retired in 1978. Their four children: Carlon J, Mark A., Linda L., Matthew D.
15. I was born In January 1959 in Portsmouth, NH. I joined the Navy in 1878 and retired in 1999. I married my wife Nancy Walzer in April 1980. Our three children: Jennifer M., Jessica L., Jacqueline B. We currently reside in New Jersey.
