Can anyone trace the Cuatt family farther back than Michael Cuatt b. 1773 in Weschester, NY? Is the name French or Dutch?

Hello, My records indicate Michael Cuatt's father to be James Cuatt coming from the Netherlands, then his father coming from France. (all of my sources are second hand and have a ? by them) I haven't had time yet to all my own original research. My sources also say that it is possible that it had something to do with the French Huguenots (French Protestants) who fled to England and the Netherlands to avoid religious persecution in France. Many of thosewho fled to the Netherlands later supposedly settled in Westchester County, NY. Sorry I can't be more conclusive than that. My husbands great, great grandmother is Betsey Cuatt, daughter of John Cuatt and Clarissa Knapp.

How do you "know" that they're French?

I've been researching the 1800 Cuatts in Westchester, trying to link them all up. I have some hypotheses, but no real proof.

I'm trying to find info about someone who married into the Cuatt family.

Phebe Jane Delanoy b. c. 1832 m. ? Cuatt. I know of two chn: Gussie & Jennie. Jennie m. Tom Billington (aft. 1909) and they had a dau, Beatrice, b. c. 1912.

Does any of this sound familiar? I think Gussie was probably named after Phebe's sister, Annie Augusta, who is my gg grandmother.

Thanx for any info you may have!!

Jennie A Cuatt married Thomas Billington on 14 Jan 1911. Their marriage record is at the Westchester County Archives. I've no Gussies in this family of Eugene Cuatt & Beatrice Fisher. Eugene's mother was a Phebe Jane (likely your Delanoy) who married John Cuatt who was the son of James Cuatt. Eugene had a sister named Mary Augusta. Let me know if you need further details.

Thanx so much for this info. I'm a little confused (I am a blond :->) -- Were Jennie, Eugene and Mary Augusta bro & sisters? Could Mary Augusta be the Gussie I have listed? Phebe's sister, Annie Augusta did refer to herself as "Gussie" in a letter she wrote in the 1860s.

Do you have Thomas Billington's previous marriage listed? He married Susan Madeline Briggs in 1905, they had a dau, Marjorie Madeline in 1908; Susie died in 1909, and Marjorie died in 1998. Do you know anything about Jennie & Thomas' dau, Beatrice?

Susie Briggs was Annie Delanoy's dau. I recently found Susie & Tom's newpaper wedding announcement at the Westchester Archives. I have a family picture that includes Susie & Tom, but he has his hand in front of his face.

Feel free to e-mail me directly at ljlowell50@yahoo.com. I am very interested in other info you have. Annie Augusta (Delanoy) Briggs is my gg grandmother.
