Hello,
Hagadis does not appear in what I have
but CSONKA does. Here are a couple
of things you may need to find before you
can go further (in my opinion) if you seek to
locate the Hungarian part of the family, as
many Americans are content to find the first
one who came here:
1. Charles is probably the English version of Karoly
and so I would look under that. CSONKA is a very
common name: you can get this on-line, search for
Matav--make sure you put in a place even if you do
not know where your ancestor is from). So you type
in say Budapest and type in K* CSONKA and BUDAPEST.
Then you will find the first 50 names beginning with K.
3. Did you ever find the date of arrival? If you did you could
check the Ellis Island website, or find out what info was on
the immigration form, such as place of origin (they
usually give a town). You need to find the name of the
town at the time (for example 1910). There are several
websites with Hungarian County maps; you may also
want to check to see if there is any county information.
Finally, the information I have on Csonka indicates that
by about 1870 there were at least four family crests. You
might want to look on
www.arcanum.hu/gesta to see if
family names show up any list. For example, the earliest
I have for my family is my great grandfather. He lived in
Temes County (Timisoara is the Rumanian town on
the map in the county). He also had family in Kolosvar
(today its Cluj). Jozsef Kovary CSONKA married Maria
Draga Vilmai Issekutz in 1877, and my grandfather was
born in Hatszeg, Temes County in 1889. This fall I found
out that he had several brothers, but this information is
still in the dark.
Hope some of this helps.
Fred
