I am helping my father in law. His father's last name was changed from Csik to Cheek. Was Csiki a form of Csik?

I do know that an " i " on the end means from.
Once our ancestors were in the "new land" they could change their name to whatever they wanted. I think it is in pronounciation, Csik sounds Cheek.
There are several towns starting with Csik. There is a Csikfalva in Maros-Torda megye, Romania.

Take a look in www.radixforum.com and post there too.
It seems that there is a surname CSIK, CSIKI, and CSIKY in Hungary's phone book.

Actually the last name is now Cheek. Ancestors were from Hungary. May have been from Ohio and West Virginnia area.

You need a name of a town and a correct "old country" spelling of the surname in order to proceed with the research over the big pond.
It is in pronounciation :Csik in Hungarian and Cheek in English.

Surnames: Schick, Csik
Csik is Hungarian, and if your ancestors were ethnic German (living in Hungary) the name would be Schick.
