Any information on grandparents. Emigrated early 1900's from Hungary. Grandmother was Veronica who was married to Mr Chehi, then after he died in a mining accident in Pennsylvania or W. Va, she married Frank Chapke.

I just saw the post on Veronica Chehi, who was married to Frank Chapke. Veronica was my paternal grandmother. She died long before I was born, but I know where she and Frank Chapke are buried.

Hi Karen! I am desperately searching for Veronica Ann Chehi, and your posted story sounds like it could fit my family tree members, too. Veronica Ann Chehi was married to Lewis Chehi. They lived in Pennsylvania. They immigrated from Hungary. They had 6 children, one of whom was my maternal Grandmother, Elizabeth Chehi. When Elizabeth Chehi died, her husband wrote on the death certificate that her father's name had been Chapkie. Correct spelling was likely Chapke. I do not know anything about how Mr. Chehi died. Is it possible that we are searching for the same Veronica? Sincerely, Patti

Surnames: Chehi
After lots of years of research, this is what I have found.
Veronica's birth name was Elizabeth Veronica Barenyi or Barenyai (sometimes listed in the US as Barena). DOB was 10/31/1883. On some documents, the year is incorrect, but this is the true date of birth. She was married in Hungary and left three sons to come to the US and my effort has been to find who she had been married to there and what happened to this family in Hungary. My aunt had visited there with them in the l970's, but no one seems to have a record of the family name. Veronica then married Lajos (Lewis) Csehi, or Chehi. They emigrated to Pennsylvania, then to West Virginia. They had Elizabeth (1912), Lewis (1913), Margaret (1914) Joseph (1918), Ethel (1910) who is my mother, and a child Ernest in 1927. There were also other children who died fairly young, Peter, Anthony, Alexander, Mary, Pearl and Irene. Lewis died 10/29/1924. On 10/03/24, Veronica married Joe Szabo in Indiana. He died in 2/25/1925 and is buried in van wert ohio. On 09/28/1928, she married Frank Chepka, changed to name of Chapke. Veronica died in 1942. Veronica's parents were Ferencz Barenyai and mother listed as Julia Sherban. Other documents list mother as Veronica Hazi, so that is as far as I am. I have death, marriage certificate on some of this and can help with some information for you if this is who you are looking for. Karen

Further to the recent post on Veronica Chehi, her daughter, Elizabeth, married James Herbert White in 9/26/1931. She was 19, he was 29. They had a daughter, Mary Margaret, named after my aunt whose name was Margaret Mary Ganger. I have been unable to find where my grandfather, Lewis Chehi died or is buried. I know where Veronica, Frank Chapke and Joe Szabo are buried. I only knew my Aunt Margaret, mother and Uncle Lewis, as the rest had all passed away before I was born. I have really interesting stories heard from my Aunt about Veronica if you are ever interested. Karen

Let me correct -- Lewis Chehi died 07/29/1924. My mother, Ethel, was born in 1920. All were born in West Virginia except for Lewis, our uncle, who was born in Harrisburg, Pa. Your grandmother Elizabeth, was born in West Virginia (I think all were born in Kahawha County) in 1912. I cannot be sure about the year of immigration because I can't locate them on the Ellis Island records, but they list on the census for 1930 that Veronica came in 1910. I can locate info on Frank Chapke, Veronica, and yet nothing on Louis (or Lajos). So many problems with transcriber errors, name changes, misspellings, etc. Karen

There were other ports that your ancestor could have come thru to America. You looked in Baltimore, Boston or Philadelphia?

Try one step/gold form www.stevemorse.org if you know that she did come thru NY Ellis Island.

Veronica's and Lewis' church marriage record should have their place of birth. Do you know the name of a location in Hungary? If yes, look in www.familysearch.org
