Looking for information on the Csala family from Debeljaca, Yugoslavia, formerly Torontalvasarhely, Hungary.

I thought you might find this interesting although the dates don't match up. My grandmother was named Rosa Csala. She was married to Ferenc Csala and they immigrated from Hungary to New York, I believe during the 1960's. They're both deceased now and my father knows not much about his family who he believes still live in Hungary.

There are many Csala's in Hungary, especially around Győr (NW of Hungary), and on the SE part of the Flatland. I have heard of families with this name in Vajdaság, Yugoslavia, too.

I would like to know more about our surname. What does it mean and were is it from
|
As far as I know:
Csala is an old form of the Hungarian verb "csal" (cheat), singular, 3rd person.
First written memories are from XII. century, when it was a female name.
It is a common name at some parts of Hungary.
Fame: Csala Zsuzsa, actress

I've heard an other explanation for csala, which meant it as a common firstname between monks. (Males, of course) Btw, I'm from the flatlands too.

I don´t think they live in Hungary, at least not the majority of them. They live in former Yugoslavia (Vajdaság), in Vojvodina, somewhere. I would also be very interested to hear about the eventual progress of this research. Sincerely,
Robert Csala (Sweden)

I do think the majority of the Csala's live in Hungary! It is definitely a Hungarian name ("Cs" is not a very common pair of letters in other languages), and there are many in the telephone directory. Some of my relatives did researches earlier (30-40 years ago), and they traced our family back to the 1820's, to Jászberény (Hungary). They are supposed to come from Felvidék, currently Slovakia.
