I was just mucking around at work and search my name when I came across this message. However, I am not sure if anyone is every to read it, but I will send any way.
I live in Australia, and I have my mothers maiden name. Her parents (my nana and grandpa), Hugh Cryans and Mary Cryans, migrated to Australia from Glasglow. I don't know where my surname originated, but I thought I would share my story, and maybe shead some light on the subject.

Regards,

Colleen Cryans

Hi Colleen,
Thanks for replying so quickly - first of all I am using my neighboroughs e-mail at the moment as my computer has been giving me problems (Hope to have it up and running soon)
My neighborough is searching her family tree and I just decided to put in Cryans which is my family name.
Can you elaborate a little for me ie. Hugh and Mary's date birth where in Glasgow they came from are they still living etc., and when did they go out to Aussy land - I live in Whitby Ontario Canada moved here in 1968 - I am 58 yrs. YOUNG - both parents have passed on - I was living in Jamieson St., Glasgow near Cathcart Road - Grampa live around the corner from us on Holybrook St. Then in 1959 we moved to a place called Simshill near Kings Park area off the Carmunack Road. I attending Holyrood Senior Secondary School - I have two sister Ann and Helen, and a Brother James Cryans who now lives in England (Ex Army Officer) I have two boys age 32 (who is a Police Officer for Peel Region his name is Colin and my youngest is 29 his name is Craig - he has his own business and does Trade Shows all over Canada. I work for Durham Region Social Service. My Dad sister Ellen Cryans in in her late 70's I will have to contact her for more info on the Cryans.
Where is Australia are YOU??? Cryans I believe is Irish not sure - my Grampa's wife was Matilda I was named after her but my name was later changed to Hilda. Gosh I just had a thought if my memory serves me well I believe we have relatives on the Cryans side of the family out in Australia they go by MacCracken not sure of the spelling -could be Matilda or Hilda MacCracken - I must check into that.
Away Have a Good Easter and if you find time drop me a line,
Cheers - Hilda

Hi Hilda,

The Hugh Cryans you are talking about is my great grampa. He had a son and named him Hugh Cryans Jnr, this hugh is my grampa. I spoke to my Nana, and she said that's it is all correct, and that Lizzie came to Australia many years ago and went and saw my nana.

Hugh Jnr married my Nana Mary and came to Australia. Hugh Snr came to Australia too, but im not sure of the date. Hugh Jnr and Mary had 4 girls - Marie (deceased), Kathleen, Helen and Elizabeth. I am Helen's daughter.

If you need any more info let me know.

Colleen.

Hi Colleen,
Glad to hear from you so quickly. Can you find out where in Glasgow your Great Grampa came from and what year was he born. Was Hugh Jnr. born in Australia or Scotland??? more info would help - can you ask Helen, Elizabeth or Kathleen to shed more light on this subject because they should have some more info to pass along. I am 58 years old
and from what my Aunt Ellen (the daughter of James Cryans(his father was Patrick Cryans) so that means Patrick Cryans was my Great Gran-father - my Dad James and Aunt Ellen Cryans mother and father was Matilda and James Cryans - hope all of this makes some sense to you. I need dates and towns etc., to help me along.
This is how I see our Family Tree:
Patrick Cryans
1. James, Hugh, Isa, John, Nellie and Lizzie were Patrick's children
2. James (Hugh's Bro as above) had James and Ellen
Hugh had Hugh Jnr. - therefore James and Ellen are first cousins of Hugh who married Mary - Your Mother Helen is my 2nd cousin and you are my 3rd cousin.

How old are YOU??? and give me little more data on yourself (ie) where in Australia are you???

I am so excited hope to hear from you soon.

Hilda

Hi Hilda,

Im 21 years old. I will need to call my nana to find out where great grampa was born. Hugh Jnr was born in Glasgow, and married my nana there too. They had Marie (deceased), Kathleen and Helen (my Mum) in Glasgow, then moved to Adelaide Australia, then they had Elizabeth.
Marie had 3 boys - Cliton (29), Anthony (24) and John (20).
Kathleen had 2 girls and a boy - Kym (deceased), Tabatha (32) and Shane (26).
Helen had 1 boy and a girl - Mathew (27), and Colleen (Me!)
and Elizabeth had 1 Boy and a girl - Stewart (21) and Sarah (13).
Tabatha and Shane have had children themselves, but I don't want to bombard you with too much info.
I will need to sit with Nana and ask her these questioned, i called yesterday while i was at work and ended up taking and extra half and hour for my lunch coz she talks so much. So i will talk with her on the weekend.

Also grampa has a brother in Adelaide too, Joseph. But we never see him. i will find out info about him too.

My mum and nana (maybe me!) are planning to go to Glasgow early next year to see our family.

Are you doing our family tree, how far back have you gone? Nana and i are the last Cryans in australia (i think), the only reason i got the name was because my parent never married, and my brother and i have different father, as to do some of my cousins. That's a bit complicated!

I was told that our orginal last name was Ryan, and that some where along the lines someone put a C in the front and an S on the end? have you heard of this?

well this is just from my head, i will call nana tonight and get some more details.

is your last name Cryans?

Bye Hilda, my new 3rd cousin!

Colleen Cryans

Well Colleen,
Thanks again for being on the ball. Just in case I lose you can u give me your e-mail address or your address in Australia as I am using my neighbours e-mail just now until my youngest son gives me back my computer that is being repaired. That way I will be sure not to lose you if Val deletes your messages. thanks

I hear you it is a lot to swallow. I do appreciate all your help.
1. I know Mary is alive is your Grampa Hugh alive??
2. Do u all live in Adelaide??
3. Now Hugh Jnr(your Grampa) has a Brother Joseph does that mean Hugh Snr only had two siblings???
4. Did Joseph every married?? if so does he have off springs??
5. My Dad (James Cryans had only one sister Ellen - my Dad died in 1991 he married my Mother Elizabeth Ross) from my Mom and Dad - we have three girls, Me(Hilda- I am the oldest age 58- then Elizabeth Ann age 57years - then Helen age 53 - then my Brother James age 46years.
James my Brother has two boys one Robert -20yrs I think maybe little older (a hairdresser by trade in London England - the other son is Stuart (18yrs) who is at College - they live in Farnborough England - My brother is a retired Army Sargeant who now works for the Road and Works Dept. Ann (as we call her) has one boy Age 25 called Simon (a good looking boy) trying to get into the Banks in Hamilton Scotland that is where Ann and George (Robertson is their last name) George is a Civl Engineer. Helen my other sister has two girls Tracy 31 and Morag 27 and they have three small children between then but are single parents.
I married Brian Manson in 1968 came to Canada the same year. I have two boys (Colin Andrew Manson 32yrs who is a Police Officer and my neighbour tells me to tell you he is a "HUNK" sorry to say it is true he has more girls in his life than I have had hot dinners. Craig Stewart Manson is 29years who is self employed he builds Communication Towers and Sets up Trade Shows all over Canada. He resembles Johnny
Deippe(not sure if that is the correct spelling of his name) They are very good to me as I have been divorces since 1981 and I raised the boys myself. Aunt Ellen my Dad's sister is 72 yrs young and is a very beautiful looking woman she has two girls -Linda 50yrs a High School Teacher(and she has two young girls age 17 and 13) Linda's sister is Irene who is approx 46 yrs old lives in California and is a Nurse she is on her own.
You were saying you are thinking of going to Glasgow to see family then can you let me know there names because I might be able to get this family tree in some shape for you. You are my main link as I can only go back to Patrick Cryans who is your Grampa's Hugh Grampa and his wife name was Ellen Dillon.

Never heard about that story re Ryan not sure if that is TRUE.
Here is my full home address for you - Hilda Manson,319 Centre Street Nr., Apt 8, Whitby, Ontario L1N5K9 Canada. I had a house sold it to make my life easier with no garden to look after there is only eight units in my building but it doesn't look like an apt. building it looks like a large ranch house in a nice area with old fashion homes. - Once my boys get time on their hands I will have them mail you photos over the e-mail that way you will have a face to the names.

What do you and your Mother do re work???

Have a Great Week-end our weather is just starting to warm up.

Luv Hilda
